Two Week Raised Garden Project

- After getting an early start at planting my garden, heavy rains then came and began eroding away my rows and flooding my pathways. At that point I decided to shore it all up with wood, thus making if a raised bed garden after already planting the crops.
nothing like watching your vegetables and fruits grow, even if you dont eat them all, they are good to share.. thanks for the video

I am re-watching videos. I remember liking your layout. Simple and not overwhelming. Some people are more productive but the yard gets taken over with projects so the first thing you see when you pull up is piles of wood, scads of lose animals, and metal heaps in back yard. Your garden area I am sure is worth every penny and ounce of sweat. It reads, "My life is in order. Taking time to enjoy Mother Nature."

Hi Matt. It's not necessary to install a bottom. Basically, all you need to do is till out the grass and other growth on the spot where you will put your raised bed. Otherwise they will find their way up through your bed and into your vegetables. Personally, I like to till down 4-6 inches on the spot I'm building a 6-inch tall raised bed. If I'm build a 10-12-inch tall raised bed I'll only till down an inch or two - just enough to remove the weeds and grass. Ants are not an issue with roots.

Hey there. Good looking garden. Rather than use the CD's to scare off birds supplement Water for the birds and a small bird feeder. They typically only get into fruits and veggies for their water. Keep the birds eating the bugs without damaging your crops. Just an idea. It has worked for me so far.

Thank you Luis. I agree, less is more, and that also makes it that much easier to maintain rather than having a bunch of clutter and excessive planting. Not to mention I really dislike garden gnomes and plastic flamingos - lol.

Thanks. Although there are plenty of deer, rabbits, and squirrels around here, the real battle comes with the raccoons. I use two motion activated sprinkler heads that can be moved around and jammed into the ground around problem areas outside the garden perimeter- they don't like those babies. Sometimes I don't even hook up the hoses because the sprinkler heads make a loud click when they're activated and they know they'll get wet when they hear that click sound. So far I'm winning the fight.

Thanks for the tip. I normally don't leave the CD's out this long - but usually long enough to let the plants get established up to about 8-10 inches. Otherwise the birds will eat the whole plant from the top to the bottom. At least that's been my experience. The toads have been doing a pretty good job at keeping the insects at bay and they don't taste-test any of my crops.

Thank you. I too, have been learning a lot from others here. Currently, I'm growing Red Robin tomatoes, green garlic, bunching onions, and lettuce for the first time under grow lights in my basement. So far, so good. I hope to be eating fresh tomatoes about January.

I plant radishes throughout the garden to repel various insects and larvae. Radishes are truly the "workhorse" of the garden. I also plant a few to pickle (Japanese style) and use the leaves in salads.

Thank you. I've been lazy and the garden is in need of some repair currently. Have been planting only garlic and basil mostly . . . and in only limited portions of the garden - weeds in the the rest. If I get to the repairs or rebuild it in the springtime I'll post another video. Between the home repairs, camping & kayaking, and just day-to-day time-eaters, I've come to realize just how much time a nice garden requires.

This is 'beautiful'! Your not growing more than maybe a 'family of four' can eat. Even though you have a BIG LOT your garden is small and compact. It's NEAT and TENDED! You have FLOWERS, which I'm assuming 'chases certain PESTS'. I like your garden, don't change it!

@FamilyLarios - Thanks. I bought the barrels from Lowes for about $40 apiece - they're ceramic. I used plastic zip-ties to attach the chicken wire to the polls - they hold up well and are easy to adjust and manipulate - and they don't rust.

@LilFrugalGardener - Thanks. I've added a small bed along the front (by the gate) and one along the back as well as a 4'x4' bed by the rhubarb. I'm looking forward to start planting here in the next few weeks (as long as the weather permits).

Thanks. I feel the same way, although I did start the season this year with a lettuce bed. However, I have since switched to container growing (long planters) for my lettuce as it is much easier to maintain and harvest.

The most beautifully aesthetic small garden! I plan on copying it somewhat...i will make the spaces a bit larger so my 9 ft maters wil have room to air out-n-spring up; and a beginner tater box which will be stacked up upon, in the middle, as the green hits its proper height so i can grow more levels; i'd have to find a spot for my crawlers-beans, cukes, and squash; AND post a no trespassing sign! (Can vermin and varmits read???)

Thanks. I had the same problem with critters before the fence. Although when I grow corn the racoons don't mind climbing it so I have to take other deterrent measures.
The initial costs were lower than one might think, and it was a "one-time" expense that actually adds to the aesthetic value of the property that's enjoyed all season, every season. The area has proved to be far more than adequate for crops that can be consumed and canned in a single season. The design allows for a crop layout to provide enhanced growth via companion planting, moisture retention, ground cover, insect repellent, amount of light, and of course, there's the ease of maintenance.
You have given me idea on fencing my garden. Today, my chickens ate all of the leaves and flowers including baby watermelons from watermelon plants.. I was very upset but can't yell at them coz they are chickens.. *duh*... Anyway, Thank you..

Thanks ... and no, it would seem certain critters have great difficulty interpreting the written word for some reason. Currently, feral cats are using one of my outer beds as a poop box for instance. Anyway, I would have liked to had my garden a tad bigger as well but a leach field and several other issues were a factor. So, what I did this year was to build a few more beds outside the main garden. I also put my 18 gallon potato bucket in the rhubarb patch.
@XaViEr3520 I mostly cook with them and use a few on salads throughout the growing season (I also eat plenty of them raw with dip). The rest, I chop and freeze so I have a supply to cook with throughout the winter. I give a few away as well.
I don't actually start pulling them until late season. I clip them to the ground every 4 or 5 weeks and they grow all over again. This way I can maximize my onion harvest all season with no replanting. Totaled about 25 pounds of scallions by fall.

Funny should say that because it's almost true. I've been using bagged composted manure, and with the cedar mulch in the rows you can't even smell the manure.

The song was one of the first "finger-style" songs I wrote on a guitar shorty after learning to finger-pick back in early 2011 - I haven't given it a name yet. I spent 3 months cutting my teeth on Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie as my first introduction to finger-picking on a guitar before writing that song - I remember the agony well. I clip my scallions when they reach somewhere around 14 inches or so in height. Scissors work best. By clipping the scallions almost flush with the soil level they will regrow again. Some seasons I've been able to clip and regrow them up to four times before end of season at which point I pull them up.

PART 4 - One thing I've found to be helpful in keeping animals away from my garden is to plant plenty of green onions/scallions on the outer parameter of your garden. Plant them even if you don't like to eat them. They're fairly maintenance free (just water), inexpensive, and if you do decide to eat them you can simply clip them down to the ground and they'll re-grow again from the remaining bulb/roots. Good luck.
