What Are Judeo-Christian Values? | 5-Minute Videos

  • Judaism and Christianity are the only two religions that share a sacred text and a fundamental set of values. These values created and sustained Western Civilization. But now many want to discard them. If we do, at what cost?
    Script:
Have you ever heard the term, “Judeo-Christian values?”
    I suspect you have.
Can you name any of those values?
    I suspect you can’t.
But you should because Judeo-Christian values are the moral foundation of Western civilization.
As the great British prime minister Margaret Thatcher put it:
“The truths of the Judeo-Christian tradition are infinitely precious, not only…because they are true, but also because they provide the moral impulse which alone can lead to that peace…for which we all long.”
Mrs. Thatcher was a believing Christian. I am a believing Jew. While we have different theologies, we have the same core values. And as far as society is concerned, moral values are far more important than theologies.
That is why traditionally religious Protestants, Catholics, Mormons, and Jews are aligned on almost every important moral issue.
Here, then, are ten of those values.
Number 1: There is one God. That God is the God introduced to the world by the Hebrew Bible, or as Christians came to refer to it, the Old Testament.
Number 2: The Hebrew Bible introduced the most revolutionary moral idea in history: that there are objective moral truths just as there are objective mathematical and scientific truths. Without God, there is no moral truth; only moral opinions.
Number 3: Because there are moral truths, good and evil are the same for all people.
Number 4: God-not man, not government, not popular opinion, not a democratic vote-is the source of our rights. The American Declaration of Independence declares that all men "are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights."
Number 5: The human being is “created in the image of God.” Therefore, Every human life is precious and therefore race is of no significance because God has no race.
Number 6: The world is based on divine order, and order is made by distinctions. Among these divine distinctions are God and man, God and nature, man and woman, human and animal, good and evil.
Number 7: Man is not basically good. Christians speak of “original sin” in referring to man's nature; Jews cite what God said in Genesis: “The will of man's heart is evil from his youth.” Both beliefs are diametrically opposed to the naive modern belief that man is basically good. And they lead to the same conclusion: we need God-based rules to keep us from our natural inclinations.

Westerners, meaning the people of whom are the spiritual descendants of Christianity, more specifically Western Christianity behave and think like Christians. Christianity gave humans compassion to the point where the rich have a concern for the poor, that white people have a concern for black people, men have a concern for women, that homosexuals have a concern for the oppressed homosexual, across all creeds, races, classes, beyond the many genders even, because of the belief of universal morality that Christian dogma has imprinted, ingrained, and by repetition on them. In other words, the conviction of the victim and their advocates who feel they have the power as a victim to be outspoken about their right not to be oppressed? The understanding and the concern for others is a Christian assumption that people think in one part of the world shares with everybody in the world. The truth is it is not. Morality is man-made and therefore culturally contingent. A socialist or a communist, whose ideology is based on "sharing is caring" as a prime moral value believes the same as a Christian. The concern for others, even animals against suffering, and oppression and rejection of private property are very Christian. What famous and influential Christian elite who lived in past encompassed animal activism, rejection of private property (The Marxism before Marx), and the concern for others all in one body - Anselm of Canterbury (Died: April 21, 1109,) who represented the Catholic Church in England. Westerners are totally Christianized. Christianity has conquered the Western mind. You don't need compassion to be a moral person but for the programmed in the Christian way, they believe it is. Or how a Westerner feels sad when a criminal is put to death because of "empathy" and the concern of excessive suffering under capital punishment and the treatment of the vacant human body due to one's reverence for their own species. There are things more valuable than human life. Plenty of soldiers do not die for their nation out of compassion but out of duty and responsibility. No atheist can reject those facts. I am not a Christian or religious, but I am not stupid to think an atheist who arrogantly talks about things he has no clue about to be taken seriously. At least I know I am not a Christian, how about you?

Is Jesus not also the *SAME GOD* who was responsible for those barbaric immoral mosaix laws. ? Did God just "change his mind" about slavery, polygamy, infanticide, genocide, ect? Indeed did Jesus himself not say about those mosaic laws that _"he who breaks even the smallest of these laws will be considered least in heaven "_ .

Mormons are polytheistic, not monotheistic. Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon Church, declared: “I have always declared God to be a distinct personage, Jesus Christ a separate and distinct personage from God the Father, and that the Holy Ghost was a distinct personage and a spirit; and these three constitute three distinct personages and three distinct gods” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 370).

    Ehh....
Let's look at two case examples without casting moral judgments : America and Israel.
-America is inclusive, culturally diverse, and has open borders. The change in demographic reality as Whites diminish is acknowledged as an inevitability, even cheered on by some. There are no laws inhibiting marriage between non-similar people. These principles apply to most all Western nations dominated by Christians too, not just America.
-Israel is a closed-borders near-ethnostate. They require DNA tests for immigration and have religious laws against the majority marrying outside their own. They're still fighting the previous occupiers of that land rather than trying to integrate them like America did to the natives. The majority inhabitants publicly fret over the loss of their majority status as demographics shift away.
Objectively, they are not the same. In fact, they're polar opposites. The very phrase Judeo-Christian is practically an oxymoron.

Prager betrays his ignorance, or perhaps his prejudices, at the end of this video when he proclaims that Judaism and Christianity are the only religions that share a "common revelation", to wit, the Hebrew Bible. Islam explicitly traces its roots to the Tawrat (i.e., the Torah) revealed by god to Moses. The first prophet and first patriarch was Abraham, which is why the three religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam are called the Abrahamic religions. It seems unlikely that Prager doesn't know this, so I assume he is just showing his prejudices by omitting Islam. And it's ironic that he cites Franklin and Jefferson, the designers of America's seal, as the embodiment of American Christianity, as both were clearly deists and affirmatively were not believing Christians, and it would appear that in actuality Franklin was most likely an atheist. As with most Prager U videos, this one is filled with misleading statements, outright falsehoods and patronizing nonsense.

One could expand on the Ten Commandments in Judeo-Christian value as representing a series of sanctities: the sanctity of God, the sanctity of his image, the sanctity of his name, the sanctity of his time, the sanctity of marriage, the sanctity of the family, the sanctity of life, the sanctity of property, the sanctity of truth and the sanctity of providence. Each of these represent core facets, like dimensions on a diamond, holding together on that which gives expression and meaning to life. Each of these sanctities is necessary for a meaningful, wholesome society. What is of very great tragedy is that these sanctities have been systematically worn down in favour of a self-existent liberty, freedom without purpose, only with variety; and bound to a new sanctity, a pseudo sanctity of government. Governmental laws have always provided a playing field in which people could peaceably explore their way across these sanctities. When people however turn to government and its laws themselves for meaning, the only game that seems meaningful to play is the politic of power, which seems to represent the most base, most venal expression of human life.

Dennis Prager is a false teacher. Regarding values 2 and 3: Plato and Aristotle believed in objective morality. This idea is not a Jewish or Christian invention. Regarding value 5: It does not follow from the fact that Jews and Christians believe man is created in the image of God that "race has no significance". Jews in Old Testament did not regard non-Jews as their equals. Regarding value 9: The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that people had free will. The idea is not a Christian or Jewish invention. Overall, the claim that there are Judeo-Christian values is false. Christians believe in the Trinity - Father, Son (Jesus) and Holy Spirit. The Trinity for them IS God. But Jews reject Jesus. They reject the Trinity. And, therefore, they reject God as Christians understand him. Can someone who rejects another person's god share the same values with that person? Of course not. Christians in the past understood this. Now they are deceived by this notion of Judeo-Christian values. Many even support the resumption of animal sacrifices in a rebuilt Jewish Temple, which would make a mockery of Christ's work on the cross.

@@theloniuspunk383 I'm not entirely clear on how you have come to the conclusions you've shared. For one, Christianity and modern rabbinic Judaism share common heritage, namely Second Temple Judaism. We're part of the same family tree, which means that Jewish morality is Christian morality, and vice versa. Despite our horrific history, we share the same values. Second, Jesus is Jewish. The Disciples, Apostles, and the original believers were almost exclusively Jewish. All but one of the New Covenant writers were Jews, with Luke being the exception.
Christianity began as a Messianic Jewish sect within the larger body of Second Temple Judaism. Considering Paul stated in his letter to the Romans that Jesus' Gentile followers had been grafted into the vine of Israel, this means that Gentile believers are a part of Israel, not the other way round. Christianity was intended to be the completion of Judaism, not its antithesis. What this means is that there is a solid link between the two religions that can't be ignored. Like it or not, that link exists.
As for the other portion, let's examine the values listed in this video,
      1. There is only one God.
Judaism and Christianity are both monotheistic religions, which means that neither would have a quarrel with this value.
      2. There are objective moral truths.
Without objective morality, there are only differences of opinion on what constitutes moral behavior. Both religions are in agreement on this point. There is a very real objective moral standard contained within the Bible, and we agree on the fact that it applies universally to all of humanity.
      3. Because there are moral truths, good and evil are the same for all people.
Again, both religions agree on this.
      4. God is the source of our rights.
      Both are in agreement here.
      5. Humans are created in the image of God.
      No disagreement here.
      6. The world is based on divine order.
Agreed 100%. The natural laws that govern our physical existence are proof of that.
      7. Man is not basically good.
Genesis 8:20-22, "Then Noah built an altar to the LORD. And taking from every kind of clean animal and clean bird, he offered burnt offerings on the altar. When the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, He said in His heart, "Never again will I curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from his youth. And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done.
      As long as earth endures,
      seedtime and harvest,
      cold and heat,
summer and winter, day and night
      shall never cease."'
This takes place after the flood, and notes that Man is inherently evil by inclination. This is one of the texts by which Christians justify the concept of Original Sin. This is in the Torah, and Mr. Prager alluded to it when discussing this point.
      8. Therefore, our natural inclinations are a very poor moral guide.
This is being demonstrated on a daily by both believing Christians and Jews, and by nonbelievers alike. It's what I call the "Disney Syndrome", the mistaken idea that one ought to follow their heart. The Tanakh says,
"The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" (Jer. 17:9)
      9. Human beings have free will.
Both are largely in agreement. Calvinist Christians reject the idea of free will, but they're the only ones I'm aware of. The rest of us all agree all agree on the concept of free will, which is why things like violating people's rights is so heinous.
      10. The Ten Commandments
100% agree here. They form the basis for the whole of Mosaic Law, to which Judaism is highly dedicated, and to which Christianity is similarly dedicated.
We find ourselves back at the beginning. How did you arrive at the conclusions you've presented? I've spent years studying Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in parallel. I'm not ignorant, so I'm bound to ask this question because there are a few possibilities here.
      1. You know something I don't. Always a possibility. I don't know everything.
      2. You're repeating something you've been told.
      3. You're going off of faulty information.
      4. You're completely ignorant.
      5. You're an anti-Semite.
I'll leave it to you to determine which is which.
Going a bit further, he mentions several Christian values, and points to their Scriptural basis, i.e., Love your neighbor (Lev. 19:18), Love the Lord your God (Deut. 6:5), and love the stranger (Deut. 10:19). All of these references are in the Torah, and make up a portion of the Mosaic Law.
I would add to that Jesus' Sermon on the Mount was based entirely in the Mosaic Law, the Jerusalem Council's decision in Acts 15 was based entirely in the Mosaic Law, and the entire Acts of the Apostles shows clearly that the Apostles retained their Jewish identity and practices; even after Jesus' ascension.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.”

And as Paul points out in Colossians, look to Christ in heaven. The core value in Christianity is Christ. Modern Western laws are NOT based on Biblical values, otherwise slavery would still be a moral practice. Jesus & Bibles' authors believed slavery is moral & suggested how to buy, sell & beat the slaves, and not to treat relatives the way slaves are treated. No Bible verse suggests slavery is immoral. Secular thinking ended slavery after about 1800 years of Biblical values failure. Jesus & authors of Bible believed slavery is moral & even suggested how to buy, sell & beat the slaves, and not to treat relatives the way slaves are treated. Not a single Bible verse suggests that slavery is immoral & should be abolished.

Christianity is like a modern prison where you are under surveillance day and night by guards you never see because they use computers and televisions to watch over you, so you don't have a moment's privacy. Only with God, he not only watches your every move, he knows your every thought, passes judgement on your every emotion, and like the prison guards, you can't see him. The beauty of Christianity is that there is no prison. You have been groomed to be your own guard, passing judgement on every breath of air you breath, and Jesus doesn't exist at all. To protect yourself from the damnation, the nonexistent Jesus threatens you with, you say your prayers, maintain surveillance over yourself and go to church where you drop money into the basket every Sunday. It's the greatest scam ever invented.

Amen! And yet, we have strayed so far from these values. The proof is in history as well as current events. Forgive us Lord, for we know what we do yet foolishly continue to do it anyway.

Prager has clearly strayed from these values, along with most of the other followers of his religion. This is made evident by his recent statements on pornography and lust.

The Christian faith is NOT based on Judaism at all. Christ rejected Judaism and the religion of the pharisees which is babylonian talmudism. There is a link between the faith of the Israelites and that of Christians. But modern jews and ancient israelites are not the same people and Jews say this by their own admission in their own texts and scholarly works

Right Judaism is actually monotheistic worshiping only ONE god like Jesus (as) did 😊
Meanwhile Christianity is polytheistic with its belief of the trinity
Cognitive dissonance at its finest 😂
