A Restaurant Apocalypse Is Starting To Sweep Across America & That Is Bad News For The U.S. Economy

- You just have to look around and see what's happening to the restaurants in your area to understand that the U.S. economy is headed in the wrong direction. When the economy is booming, restaurants are full and chains open more locations to expand their business. But when the economy is struggling, restaurants get increasingly emptier, and underperforming locations go belly up. Sadly, it seems that a "restaurant apocalypse" has started to sweep across the country this year.
Faced with higher living expenses, most households have very little discretionary income to spend as a result of inflated prices, and that's particularly true for our young adults.
Americans love to eat out, but these days about 60% are living paycheck to paycheck, and report experiencing financial distress. Without the extra dollars to spend at the end of each month, people are consuming less, and many sectors are hurting. The restaurant industry is being disproportionately hard hit by this trend.
According to data from Placer.ai, visits to sit-down restaurants were down nearly five percent in the past year. People just can't afford to dinner out as much as they once did.
Consequently, we're witnessing a wave of restaurants closings that is growing larger all over the nation. Even in the Big Apple, many famous restaurants are being shut down.
Despite being known for its great fining spots, New York City has been facing a major decline in foot traffic in recent years. From December 2023 to January 2024 alone, more than 40 big restaurants and bars were shut down, with some owners saying business simply never picked up after COVID lockdowns in 2020.
High prices for everything have severely affected my plan. I'm concerned if people who went through the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am having now. The stock market is worrying me as my income has decreased, and I fear I won't have enough savings for retirement since I can't contribute as much as before.
It's recommended to save at least 20% of your income in a 401k. You can use online calculators to estimate how much you should save based on your age and income. Saving at least 20% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. By saving this much, you can take advantage of investing in the stock market and potentially grow your retirement savings over time.
It's often true that people underestimate the importance of financial advisors until they feel the negative effects of emotional decision-making. I remember a few summers ago, after a tough divorce, when I needed a boost for my struggling business. I researched and found a licensed advisor who diligently helped grow my reserves despite inflation. Consequently, my reserves increased from $275k to around $750k.
That's fascinating. How can I contact your Asset-coach as my portfolio is dwindling?
Well, there are a few out there who know what they are doing. I tried a few in the past years, but I’ve been with Melissa Terri Swayne for the last five years or so, and her returns have been pretty much amazing.
Thank you for this tip. It was easy to find your coach. Did my due diligence on her before scheduling a phone call with her. She seems proficient considering her resume.
We need more manufacturing jobs in America, not more burger flipping jobs!
Blame Nixon. He never should have gone to China. Or taken the country off the gold standard. Also Clinton and his NAFTA.
This is the truth!
The truth hurts.
Restaurants are horrible, selling so called food that is not fit for human consumption by using seed oils, sugar, grain flour and more sugar….Unfortunately consumers are set up for heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity and it’s getting worse
Honk honk
when poor people can't afford dollar stores we are in big trouble
When dollar stores close because they can't afford the customer stealing and theft we are in big trouble
The main problem with them as well as other stores is all the shoplifting.
Oh, but the corrupt politicians ever keep giving our tax money to very corrupt money-laundering Ukraine, and to the illegal immigrants. Like a crazed religious cult or an addiction to drugs, spiting the Americans who they are supposed to be working for. While giving little to Maui Hawaii or to homeless veterans. Evil Democrats hate America. Mark Levin even came out with a book, _The Democrat Party Hates America._ I just finished reading it.

The shoplifting is due to _soft-on-crime_ Democrats and Soros prosecutors who refuse to do their jobs. As if the evil Democrats are purposely trying to destroy our economy.
Dollar store aint a dollar more like 2 to 7 dollars now and theft and neo liberal crime is a problem too
We certainly do NOT need McDonalds! I hope the greedy fast food outlets all go out of business. The world will be a better place to live in without that constant greed!!!
Greedy? They aren't getting rich running these. Their wages and food costs have skyrocketed. Everything in this Country runs on oil to run our farms, transport our products, etc. The imbeciles in Washington intentionally did this to us. It will get much worse as the climate nut cases attempt to put us all on foot and living in tents so we are more 'friendly' to the environment.
What about the jobs and productivity that will be lost? Do you care? Do you understand? Do you care to understand?
OK, but you do realize that means a mass amount of people will lose their job
@@seanm7539There is not much difference between drug pushers and fast food joints. Both very bad for your health. The population of the USA is chronicly obese. Eating far too much fast food of shit quality.
Someone under educated what's say? That fast food places are greedy. If you haven't ever run a franchise. you don't know what you're talking about
I stopped eating Fast Food 6 months ago and lost 30 Lbs now a lot fitter. Make sandwiches and fresh coffee in a flask no more Monosodium in Fast Food. Try it you will never go back and will be wealthier.
You're right. That stuff isn't good for you anyway.
Eventually, if you want to be healthy, you'll HAVE to do that. I did a couple years back and lost 40 lbs (only meant to lose 30 but got in the habit of eating far less), and greatly improved my metabolism.
For 40+ years I ate fast food because it was both cheap and convenient and I was busy. But it's no longer cheap (or even reasonable) for most fast food, and being retired really changes the "busy" picture.
You guys are missing the whole point. The economy is doing very bad and getting worse. If everyone starts cooking at home like you say, grocery stores will be next to start closing. While government grocery stores will be popping up and you can't buy without a chip.
So this video should've been about you instead of the economy. Got it.
Same, I cut out fast food and all processed foods. I still want certain things but not being able to understand the ingredients drove me crazy. I’ve noticed a weight difference and I’ve been on a better fitness journey, I didnt care for “fast food” anyways
If you think inflation is hurting fast food chains what do you think it's done to the middle class? It destroyed them. There is no middle class today and families cant afford $40 or $50 for cardboard burgers and oversalted fries plus a drink.
Chapter 11 is theft. They shouldn’t even get a first chance.
It's not the salt. It's the poisonous seed oils they fry them in. When they stopped frying in tallow, everyone began getting fat and sick. Haven't you noticed?
Socialist/Marxism had to break the middle class because their cash flow funded the entire madhouse. Wait until the "Entitled Victims" get cut-off from their UBI or whatever they're using to suck off the system because there's no middle-class to prop it up, anymore. There will be screaming, wailing & gnashing of teeth. Lol😫 😰 😭

During covid we all relearned the Joy of Cooking and we find we are better cooks than restaurant chefs.😊😊😊
I've learned the Joy of Cooking since 1975. I've maybe eaten out 40 times TOTAL in my entire 75 years. It was amusing during the Lockdown to watch all the Fast Food junkies learning how to cook.
yes i agree i have learnt to cook lots off tasty meals the less hands that touch your food the safer it is mad max times are coming so am going to learn how to forage and cook forage food
You`re right; and what are most fast food/big chain restaurant meals, anyway? 16 year-olds throwing something into a microwave for 3 minutes? $20-30 per person for that meal? Eat at home.
It takes VERY LITTLE to be better than the typical fast food place, re overall quality.
Real restaurants during Covid were fine. I just carried out, wore a mask, and tipped more to help my favorite local places out. Oh, and picked up enough to eat multiple meals.
Exactly, I said same thing above ... Restaurant prices are TOO MUCH now, so we are not eating out. We are cooking at home for everything. Thankfully, we learned so much from Covid Times, so we can cook better than ever. So, we are just going to use Three Magic Words ... "Google COPYCAT RECIPES" ... Because we are not going to pay $20+/$25+ per person to eat at some fast food restaurant. We're not rich.
What infuriates me is the billions we send to other countries! Our politicians don't care about Americans!
We are $35,000,000,000,000.00 in debt! The Government pays $2,000,000,000.00 in interest every day!!! And the crazy thing is, they are increasing their spending!!!
We have massively overbuilt restaurants and fast food. Some of these old chains have been on life support for over a decade and need to just die off. The problem is even if you eat at home it isn't exactly a low cost option either. Even in the express line 10 items or less it can easily run you 100 bucks now lol.
But with $20 for a meal at McDonald’s that $100 groceries store bill can last a few more days
We sent our economy to China, that's the problem.
Let me guess -- in your world, the earth is flat and vaccines are wildly dangerous.
You can get LOTS of healthy food very reasonably at a typical grocery store, if you don't insist on Organic, fancy brands, or expensive meat, for example.
Yes, good point, @HayW. But, just cook in bulk where the money goes further. Trust me -- its many times cheaper to eat at home ... probably something like 1/5 to 1/10 of eating out.
Burger king was great in the 80s-90s. They sucked in 2000s onwards
McDonald's five dollar meal is just the Happy meal rebranded 🙄🤣
But where's my toy???? (I recall an ad showing some teen with a shake, fries, and burger with "change from your dollar.")
I'll have to try one of those-???🤔.. After July's S.S check arrives/ if I have $ 5.00 leftover-???😳.
Perhaps this will solve America's obesity, Cholesterol and heart attack epidemic!
Nope Americans are addicted to fast food and sugar smh 😢😢
It will help IF people eating at home will eat much more sensibly.
Given the size and scale of the problem, including bad habits like being too sedentary, the idea that alone will "solve" the overall problem is silly.
won't solve anything, still be buying shit from grocery shops.
Hey , you forgot diabetes!
Hopefully fast food has a lot of calories and no nutritional value .
I grew up with family dinners. Nobody went to a restaurant, it was too expensive in the 60's for us. Chinese food was kinda affordable for once in a while for some people. Then came fast food joints. It changed everybody's life. The science of making it taste good, better than all those untrained cooks raising a family. So everyone quit mom's food forever. Chef's and kids cooking at fast food took over. People went because with no family at the table it was too lonely and too much kitchen work to eat at home. The junk food industry increased people's appetites. Food obscession was everywhere and everyone got fat avoiding the kitchen at home. Kids loved it and hated home cooked meals. Flavor and ingredients designed for addiction, took over appetites. Now everyone is fat all because they opened up a junk food industry that was part of destroying families.

Mom's cooking required mom being at home. That's not really possible anymore for most people.
Same here. Mom normally cooked, and we went out OCCASIONALLY and it was a TREAT -- both for mom having a night off cooking, and us for a change of pace.
I think the rarity of single earner families had a big influence in eliminating much of home cooking.
Us millenials and zoomers finally listened to the boomers when they said "well stop eating out".

McDonald's is a reality company. They make their money from rent paid to them from owner operators which makes up tof 80% of stores. Store owners pay them 20 % of income on rent, around 20-25% to staff then there is food cost, utilities, insurance, etc. Really one store doesn't make that big of a profit. So yes when wages go up the profit goes down. Think of it like this. Say you make about 2000 A month and after you pay out everything you are banking only 10% of what you make.
I just paid $6 for a small Dairy Queen sundae. The counter clerk actually apologized.
So why did you pay it.??? Just say NO.
High rents, high housing costs.basic costs of living have gobbled up all the money so little left to go around the rest of the economy.
We need more immigration to push down those vacancy rates and push up the rents even higher. Landlords really need the help.
The real kicker for me is McDonald's advertise on their drive thru menus a "$1,2,3 dollar menu"....
Any soda /tea - $1.49
Iced coffee - $2
4pc nuggets - 3.09
Small fries - $3.29
Mcdouble /MchChicken - $3.39/ $3.49
Nothing is actually $1, 1 item is $2. and everything else cost "more" than $3.... Theyve had the same "1,2,3" menu since sodas were acrually $1.... it went to $1.29... and now $1.49. Im not loving it. i feel betrayed! 💔 😢🍟 🍔 😂

Restaurants are closing down because people has no more money to spend. But at the same time so many corporations are posting record profits.
Why, because they paid well their CEOs but not their regular employees.
Fast food wages are the highest they've ever been. That's a big part of the reason franchisees can barely make a profit.
People won't starve if resturants go under. Cook at home. It's cheaper and healthier.
Amen 100%
These people can't "cook at home" unless it's microwavable. They would burn oatmeal...

Needless to say, that app got pitched into the NOT ON YOUR LIFE WOULD I OFFER YOU A JOB.
Lack of fast food simply dosnt affect my life, so no starving here!
Exactly. Clickbait title. Just like the clowns who are economic doomers and claim things like "mass starvation" in the US for decades. Meanwhile in the real world, all sorts of food assistance for the poor, lots and lots of grocery stores with lots of food of all types, etc.
Grocery store dining has also cut into restaurants. people still eat out but get the precooked food at the grocery stores.
The problem started with the convenience of Door Dash. Sounds like a plus, but without customers in the restaurant, there's no need for servers, no tips, no deserts, no beverages, and NO ALCOHOL sales.
With these Restaurants their prices are rising, customer service is horrible and the Food is getting worse and worse! I will be Cooking at Home if I can help it!
Yep. I found the recipe to make my chipotle stuff at home!
They shrink portions and raised prices!
The restaurant industry did this to themselves with a combination of high prices and exploitation, so I don't feel too bad. Watching greed fail is like watching a toddler learn the hard way that the stove is hot.
So expensive, a drink for $4?
Good people will live longer without restaurants and be more fit
Too bad for the student teens, they kind of rely on restaurant jobs, for pocket money/savings.
They can go to Job Corps and gete pocket change (in the form of a stipend) while they are earning a vocational certificate.
It's only for people ages 16 to 24 in the USA at www. JobCorps .gov.
You mean those sloths that rang up a big student loan debt, that got transferred to the taxpayers? No one cares.

Count me in as someone who no longer eats out. I used to eat out every Sunday with a group from church, but no more. It’s a choice between eating out or buying meds.
You doing good on right path; now wean off all of the RX. Think of the money youll save, probably feel better and lost the massive side effects these dangeorus, toxic RX all drugs do to all on them. (additictive too so you will keep buying).
I think part of the problem is the entire concept of chain restaurants. If I eat at a local mom and pop the money stays local. It pays the owner, the cooks, and the wait staff. Eating at a chain the money is local and then there are stockholders and upper managment that have to get paid also. There are just too many needing to get paid from the price of meals without raising prices to the point it isn't worth it anymore.
1. People got used to cooking at home during the pandemic.
2. Going out to eat has gotten more expensive.
…so, people eat out less.
We're all going to die

Eventually, but if you get understanding you'll never die...
As an outsider I have got reports from many Americans for almost a year who have told me about this storm of restaurants bankruptcy that is sweeping across the country. Not only the restaurants are closing down but the supermarkets are getting emptier and companies are shortening working weeks just to keep their heads above water by reducing expenses. This scenario has been expected as the usa government has no structural plan to stimulate the economy, but doing the opposite by increasing import tariffs which will trigger inflation again.
If restaurants are closing and supermarkets are emptier, why are we all so overweight?
@@les0101s hahaha, according to a documentary the “obesity” is caused by a virus in hamburgers and “fast food”. These viruses do not die when the meat is fried on hot plates. But, your observation is correct that Americans tend to be obese. However, this “American disease” is not caused by too much eating but by viruses. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mc Donald’s food is full of fillers and garbage 🤮
Restaurants cost over 3x the cost of groceries, for a lesser quality of food, that has been spit on by who knows who.
Americans need to do home cooked meals rather than rely on unhealthy takeaways.
We don't eat out at all anymore. When it was affordable it was still a luxury and we seldom ate out but now that things are too expensive, we just quit restaurants altogether. Pizza was a sore point for me, I love pizza more than anyone I know and the cheapest local pizzeria sells a large 2 topping pizza for $28.25 after taxes so I would seldom order a pizza even though I'd love to eat pizza all the time. That hurt. What solved the problem was a pizza stone. My missus went out and bought one for about $30 and it makes a pizza as good or better than commercial for about 5 bucks. The missus makes the dough and I do the assembly work and now I can afford to have delicious commercial quality pizza anytime I want and I just love it. I also love that I can put on too much pepperoni and cheese and mushrooms and not get charged a lot extra for it. If you love pizza, I'd absolutely recommend a pizza stone, they are freakin' awesome and will save you tons of money.
Making pizza at home is so much better! And it cost so little so much less!

We've been falling into the slippery slope from the time of the 2008 decline. And prior to this, the market crashed in 1998. Many folks in that time had to refinance and or live on their credit cards to make payments while quickly seeking another job position. Once you lose a job and out of work for over six months, it is damn near impossible to return to being on top of your bills.
The American empire is witnessing its end.
@@Lady_A.R.Browne yeah because 08 wasn't really the crash, it was an announcement that there was a problem.
98 yeah, I can say that by the time 98 rolled around it was obvious that the stooge so called middle class over spent and was using the house as a credit card. They had already refinanced 4 times as a means of blowing money.
The credit panic of 2000 was basically an admission that it's game over.

What made our grand parents and great grandparents middle class was simply they was savers not spenders.

The stamp programs at grocery stores was common but what I mean, is simply they'd be the first to tell you that in order to get the free speedway hot dog and drink you had to spend x amount meaning it's not really free but rather a postponed paid in advance purchase.
So it's pretty much.
