As long as we are on the subject of exhaust I figured why not solve the rattle I've had in the Subaru exhaust since I got the car. This is a simple affordable method that has never let me down, remember if you need to do a large shield you can always string together more hose clamps.

Thank you so much for this video. My exhaust rattles had been driving me crazy for months and I was unable to see anything that was loose. The technique of smacking along the pipe with the palm of my hand was the key to finding the loose heat shield above the catalytic converter. It was in a very inaccessible area and because the welds on the lower shield were still very solid I never suspected the upper shield. One hose clamp on each end of the converter did the trick. My truck is now blissfully quiet. Thanks again for taking the time to post this video.

Thank you so much for this vid Eric. I've listened to my Dad's truck make the rattling pie pan noise at idle and coming to a stop for almost 2 years now. Thanks to your vid I was able to convince him to let me crawl under his baby with some hose clamps and fix it in 5 minutes. It's a small thing, but it always drove me nuts seeing him pull up to my garage in his polished baby and hearing that stupid rattle. He'll let me wrench on every other machine he has, but not his truck. Finally it's as quiet as that gleaming cream puff should be. Now if I could just get him to risk scratching the bed liner by hauling a pillow or really any thing in it.

However I am a smart women and that didn't make since to me. I brought the car home and I left the car running and crawled all the way around the car trying to find out where that crazy noise was coming from. One thing to keep in mind - while stainless clamps will clamp just as well as a cheap zinc-plated clamp, the stainless clamp is more 'noble' as far as corrosion goes, so the steel exhaust system 'protects' the stainless clamp by corroding. Mixing stainless and ordinary steel, at high exhaust temperatures, then driving through a rainstorm, is guaranteed to accelerate the corrosion of the exhaust system. Experience has shown this. The fix: save money and get the cheap zinc-plated hose clamps (say, Harbor Freight). They will clamp just as well and won't accelerate the corrosion of your exhaust system. If the cheaper zinc-plated hose clamp corrodes away, it is much cheaper to replace the single zinc-plated hose clamp than the entire exhaust system.

The lady mechanic I saw actually replaced my pinion bearing. That is like open heart surgery on a vehicle. I understood exactly what it was she was doing, but it was still way beyond my capabilities and certainly tool wise. She had to pull out the axels, disassemble the entire differential (spider gears etc), pull off the universal joint, and disconnect the drive shaft to get that pinion out, and then machine press a new bearing on it, and then put everything back together, and of course calibrate the breakaway (meaning to make sure the gears in the differential are perfectly lined up so they don't destroy each other over time by rubbing one another at a bad angle. That's actually how I met her lol. I went to 3 garages first who said they couldn't do the job or lol, said they don't do that kind of work. She saved it.

I’ve been having this problem with my 5th Generation Camaro use to do it at idling point. The dealership used clamps it worked. 2 months later the problem is back but when I’m gradually accelerating between 35 to 55mph

I also hear those clamps often referred to as worm clamps. Good job on the rattle though even you have to admit it wasn't really the proper fix. It'll do.

little tip. go to ace hardware and get those long long hose clamps. they are actually cheaper than the car hose clamps yet like 18" long so one size fits all (cut)

I too was confused what's actually happening. Today I found out that it was coming from exhaust, but was not sure if it is actually coming from exhaust, this video confirmed it.

Hi Eric..firstly a wonderfull approach of your's in the video...thanks.
My car makes a whinning sound starting at 1700 rpm and goes off at 2300 rpm, only during this rpm band. Checked the wheel Bearing , water pump, fan belt bearing, tensioner bearing. Still not going...what you say.

Thanks so much for this video Eric. My 96 Chevy S10 does the rattling noise when I slow down or drive in low rpm or when I'm sitting idle. It makes a "snorting" type sound. I will be sure to see if this is an exhaust issue.

I have a 03 GMC Sierra 1500 that has started making exhaust rattle noise. Found the culprit being the pipe is moving inside the upper flange connected at the header. The 2 nuts on the flange look to be tight but I know looks can be deceiving. Im trying to find time to check the torque on the nuts to see if that fixes the issue but if I find out they are tight then my question would be what would cause the pipe to move hitting the inside of the flange creating the noise and the fix for it? Thanks for all your help Eric!
