I celebrate this holiday every year because of the English roots that run in my veins. And I think it’s important for every American to acknowledge that. I too have British ancestry and am a U.S. citizen. Every year I celebrate Boxing Day with my family because I want to teach them about their heritage. My husband is a descendant of several generations of Lord Chief Justices in England. If his part of the family hadn't left England to help govern the colonies and then decided to stay and fight for the American side, we would still have titles of nobility. For myself, I don't know anything about what my family was in England. I only know that I have 54% British ancestry because of genetic testing.
I am very proud of my British heritage. I too celebrate St. George's Day, but for me it is because it is a Catholic holy day. It's part of my faith. I will never forget about England. I just wish that I could go there on more than just a holiday. I would live there if I could permanently. But it is not going to happen. Instead, I will just be the odd American who speaks British English and has somewhat pronounced British accent. Why do I have an accent? I was studying modern RP for fun before I suffered a major trauma which triggered a more or less permanent British accent. It's fine, but it annoys some people around me. I have learnt to accept that it's a part of me.
Im not a british, neither an anglican, but my second country, my spiritual country and my hearth lies with England.

@Dot Actually Great Britain is a geographic term (not a political one) for the island containing England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland is on the island of Ireland. Hence the full name of the country is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". I find it easier to just call it "Britain".
They're not a collective of independent countries because independence assumes sovereign governments which they don't have. England doesn't have its own devolved administration, whilst the devolved administrations of Wales/Scotland/NI have key powers reserved to Westminster (foreign policy, defence, immigration, trade policy, etc).

I'm Welsh but I really think England should adopt this for their own country, by all means keep God save the Queen as the anthem for the Common Wealth countries. But could you imagine a 82,000 people at Twickenham singing this before a game of rugby with Wales or Scotland? As an Englishman I must say this country has a long line of history and it should be thoroughly respected. No other country shares the heritage we do in England. We have many cities, monuments, castles, churches, and bloodline to be proud of.
From the Anglo Saxons, to the industrial revolution, One must admit this country is an amazing nation. The queen is now a reminder of our glorious past and the royal bloodline, she is a very inspirational woman through the works of charity and the tourism she attracts that puts money into England. However some English may feel about her, she is only trying to help our situation in our country, as her title reveals.
However, I feel "god save the queen" should remain in the UK, but when it comes to the actual anthem of England, I truly believe that "land of hope and glory" is more patriotic and much more equal towards the English people, as not every discovery, invention and war committed in England was discovered, invented and won by the queen alone, the right is reserved for all English.
That's my opinion.
If you agree with me and you live in England, you can have a say in it you know? Just simply google search petitions UK gov, go on government UK website and start the petition on what you feel should be England's national anthem. If it gets 10,000 votes the government Will reply, if it gets 100,000 votes it will be debated in parliament.

It's a shame it took me this long too understand what my grandfather was so proud of. But now I understand and I will continue to fight the battles he fought. Lest we forget those who allowed us our right to live in such luxury.
I'm proud to say that as of 15 years and 7 months, I've applied to join HM's Armed Forces, have submitted my Medical forms which my GP will mail to the Army. I am going for an Army Briefing and an Interview at the Army Careers Office... In just one hour and 20 minutes time. Once I finish year 11, I'll be in the Army (September 2018)... I owe this opportunity of great sacrifice to the land of hope and glory!
