How to Breed DONKEYS and MULES

  • The mule1 or mulo2 is a sterile hybrid animal that results from the cross between a mare (Equus ferus caballus) and a donkey or donkey (Equus africanus asinus). It shares some characteristics with the Hinny (resulting from the cross between a horse and a donkey or donkey), but differs in others due to certain genes, which vary their effect depending on whether they are received from the mother or the father.
The term mule comes from the Latin mulus and was originally used to refer to any descendant of two different species.
A mule is generally larger, stronger, and easier to breed than a hinnies, which is why it has been favored by breeders.
Like hinnies, mules are almost always sterile, and in the few cases of fertility the young tend to be underweight and weak. Its sterility is attributed to the different number of chromosomes of the species from which it comes (donkeys have nuclei of 62 chromosomes, while horses have 64).

I was told that mules are much better at trails. I'm moving to the mountains and I'm thinking about breeding mares and donkeys for trail riding. It's definitely a passion that I had no idea how to use, but God finds a way.

That's the WORST IDEA I have ever heard! Are you not aware that there are already thousands of them that are tortured and slaughtered for meat every year, simply because of the unbelievable overpopulation of them?! THERE ARE THOUSANDS TOO MANY HORSES, DONKEYS, AND MULES!
Just go to Horse Plus Humane Society channel and watch any video that says in the title, 10, 20, or 30 saved. They try to rescue as many as they can from the incredible torture of the process that leads to the slaughter of unwanted horses, mules, and donkeys.
The reason thousands every year are forced to endure such torture is that there are simply far too many of them, due to backyard breeders. Do you really want to become one of those backyard breeders?! I couldn't do it and hold my head up, knowing that my mules etc will eventually end up there.
GOD doesn't want anyone to breed animals that there are already too many of. That includes you!

yes donkeys are animals from the mountains in their natural habitat, and are much more sure footed and safer to ride in rugged terrain compared to horses which are animals of the open plains. when a horse spooks it will instinctually run away as fast as it can. Donkeys will freeze on the spot as if it were to run ina blind panic it could end up running/falling off cliffs and ledges.

@@windhound2005 My dad said that he wanted to bring a horse and a mule in the WindRivers, out in Wyoming. Like they did last time. Same mountain different approach, that's how he can get it done. Now that I know about horses and mules, I would not feel comfortable with a horse the way we went the first time. I wasn't able to make the 2nd trip. Thanks for the heads up and confirming this knowledge about mules and horses.

I find it quite interesting selecting the parent breeds with the characterisations/size/colour etc u want to combine in ur mules and seeing how they blend and look... kinda like 'build a bear" for mules. I follow Emma massingdale here in the UK who recently imported a mule out of an andalusian mare and a large Spanish breed of donkey Jack. I can't remember the breed tho.

Don't know about others, but my grandpa had a mare. Every other year he would breed her for a mule and when it got close for her to deliver, he and my uncles held vigil because she would kill the mule foal. She was a good mother to her horse foal but would kill the mule foal if given the chance.
Always wondered if most mares were like that?

yes, ive seen a farm specialising in using large molly mules as surrogates and implanted with horse or donkey embryos which they carry to term, birth and raise. they may be sterile, but are unaware of this facrt and will still have seasons like a fertile mare/jenny and display stallion behaviour in the john mules, thus requiring gelding to reduce aggression and unwanted behaviours. its also much more ethical using a mule as a nursing surrogate (hormonally induced) as there is no foal which would usually be taken froom the birth mother and discarded to allow for a more valuable foal to be adopted to the nurse mother.

I saw where a man had a very valuable prize Jenny donkey that could no longer carry a foal. They used a mule as a surrogate for the Jenny. There have been a few rare mules that are fertile.Another man had a pony mule that ran with a pony stallion and had several foals .
