Ian Kenny -- Vocals Andrew "Drew" Goddard -- Lead Guitar Mark Hosking -- Guitar Jon Stockman - Bass Steve Judd - Drums Karnivool is a five-piece music group from Perth, Western Australia. Their music style is a combination of melodic progressive rock and alternative rock, with alternative metal influences. Formed in 1998, Karnivool have since released several singles and one EP, and most recently their debut album Themata. Their new album, Sound Awake, was released in June, 2009 to critical acclaim.

I love these early versions of the Sound Awake tracks
This band is so incredibly underrated
They were still messing around with Goliath before the studio version, this audience experienced one of the coolest intros to a track without even knowing it.
Hands down. I specifically come to this video just for the intro. I love the recorded version of Goliath. But this is just top tier. Wish we had a studio version of this intro. Would make an incredible Intro on the new album we're "patiently" waiting on lol

It doesn't suit the studio version of Goliath. You can hear different notes from the intro in the bridge and verses.
The intro alone is worth watching this video!

They used to play pub gigs in Perth before Themata dropped. Anyone who saw them live before they became known outside of WA knew that we were seeing something special.
Most bands get lucky with one good hook within a song, this band oozes great hooks...and that's just one song.

That is true. The lyrics to "We Are" changed a lot also from when they were first performing it live till the album version.
In both cases, I definitely prefer the final album version of the lyrics. So it's great that they keep perfecting songs even after they are technically "written" and even have performed them live.

Meytal Cohen did a drums only cover of Goliath that is more impressive than any other cover she has done because she reps our boys from Perth, when I emailed her and thanked her she responded by saying Karnivool are one of her favorite bands.
Rick Beato did a breakdown of Goliath on his channel, he also rated Sound Awake in the top 30 greatest studio albums ever produced.

Maybe so people consider going to their shows. It is like the cherry on the pie if you know what I mean.
Karnivool has always had a special kind of atmosphere to their live show. Stuff like this, the Themata live intro, filler sound in between songs, playing their cover of Gotye's The Only Way live is just some of the stuff that makes it a different experience from the records.
Gotta keep the real fans happy. They play customized intros to most their live sets. Themata always had a slightly different into every time, just keeping it fresh every time they play. Admiration

I bought the Alpha/Omega bass pedal only because Jon uses it for this track. His pedal board is massive and he uses about 12 different patches for different tracks.

They hadn't released Sound Awake yet, Goliath wasn't completed when they performed this. Karnivool have a habit of playing tracks live before they are recorded.
what are the chords in the intro
I had no clue how well Ian Kenny's live performance stands up to the studio vocals. They aren't the same, but they are barely rough around the edges. Unlike, for instance, Gotye, who can rarely keep his voice together on stage.
I don't think Kenny has ever had a bad show
When you realize he's not actually singing the correct lyrics but they still fit

This was before the album came out, so perhaps they hadn't actually finished the lyrics. Ian said in an interview that he enjoys playing new songs because it's kind of a way to practice them, so maybe from playing they found they had some preferable lyrics. :p

its in c# minor.. Use your ears!! the first part of the intro is c#min7 to Bmaj5. then the first transition is Bflat to Aflat minor. try figuring the rest out! it will help your musicianship:)

Hunter Phinney This was filmed in 2008, a year before Sound Awake was released. According to the band, they enjoy playing "in progress" songs live. Hope this helps. :)

Symbionite xX for the bass, I believe the man has the first four set to a drop B tuning and keeps the higher two at G and C.
Mark is in B F# B G B E (Karnivool standard tuning), Drew is in C G C G A# D with a Capo on 1st fret, which he removes at 5:54

Yup, but be careful how you put your capo, the string are really loose with the low C, so it's really hard to no get a a flat/sharp sounding C# with the capo on
Victor Lecerf Your tuning is correct. I think it is an interesting tuning, but it makes things complicated at times.
Am I the only one who is realizing that the lyrics are not the same as the album? Been singing this song since like 2010 or something and just came across this performance and was slightly confused for a second. It's fine, but I prefer the album version.

It is alternating between 7/8 and 9/8. A creative way of playing with common time because together it is just 16/8. (At some parts it messes up by doing 2x 7/8 though.)
