I don't recommend GPS for cats. Their batteries usually don’t last more than one day and that is exactly the problem. If a cat gets missed, locked somewhere in, the batterie will be dead before you find the cat. So in urban areas I recommend an airtag or a tracker. Their batteries last months and are perfect for emergencies only. If you want to watch your cat roaming around from your sofa, ok, that will be funny with GPS, but if she gets lost, GPS usually is not a good idea. I help in animal services here and I get a lot of alerts stating "cat wears a GPS tag, but battery is empty”

But I knew it was still somewhere behind my head so I tried rubbing the back of my head slowly and the cockroach went rushing around my body and then it flew off somewhere. Shout out to your cat!
For anyone considering this - I did an experiment with an Airtag that provided some information related to this. I put an airtag in a log and sent it on a journey down a river. So - basically a moving airtag without stopping (like a pet - they aren’t likely to stay still)
The result was that I believe that unless the tag is close to an IPhone for a period of time - it won’t ping.
So if your cat/dog/log goes past an iPhone - it won’t ping. The tag and phone have to be together for awhile to cause the location to update.
This makes sense - otherwise, you’d get dozens of updates if your cat ran past a bunch of iPhones.
Hope that helps - it doesn’t really seem like a good pet-tracking (or log tracking 🙂) solution.

i think the best practical use of this with pets is to use a cat/dog harness and store the airtag inside or on the harness, and have your pet wear the harness when walking them or letting them outside for any reason. that way it isn’t really dangling from your pet’s collar and getting in their way. if you let your pet out frequently away from urban areas, i’d invest in an actual gps tracker instead.

  • @johnthomas338

Every time your cat jumps down from a high surface, that tag will wallop them right in the face. I know, I used to have a heavy magnet on my cat's collar for a magnetic cat flap, and I stopped using it as soon as I saw it hit my cat in the mouth after he jumped down from somewhere. You should (at the minimum) tape it to your cat's collar. But it's just too big to use for cats anyway.

I think because there is such an obvious market for pet-airtags, we will see some soon. Airtag allows thirdparty sellers to get into the system, so airtag-collars will definitely be ideal.

I bought an AirTag with collar for my cat as well since I moved to a new home recently where my cat can go outside. I must say, the AirTag was not a succes. I lost my cat on her first real attempt to go outside. Tried to find her with my phone and trace the AirTag, but I was unable to find her. I didn’t get a location update for over an hour, so it was really hard to try and find her. I spent around 2 hours walking around my home trying to find her. Just when I was about to give, I got a location update, telling me she was near me. Finally I could use to locate option, but like in your video, it was still very difficult to lock on. In the end, it turned out she was 10 meters away from my house, crawled into a corner of my neighbor’s garden. I didn’t get a location update until I was 3 meters away from here and even then, it was still difficult to find her. Long story short, I am not too happy about the AirTag on my cat and I just ordered a tabcat with rf technology. That should work a lot better… i hope 😅

Although it was difficult to, it still helped you find your cat, no? I read an article where it said that they recommended the air tag for indoor only cats, as they tend to get scared easily and tend to hide, giving you a better chance at trying to track them. And for outdoor cats a gps tracker is recommended since they’re used to the outdoors and wander more. I was thinking about getting one for my indoor only scaredy cat that likes door dashing sometimes, but im not sure

I am really hoping Apple gives us more Airtag options in the future as I would like a more discreet tag to attach to my E-bike. I have thought about using one now but there are currently some drawbacks using the Airtags in this manner.

  • @madcow78
    @madcow78 Před 3 lety

An AirTag collar could solve the issue of the pending tag. The issues with tracking could be partially solved if the pet comes when you call his or her name. If a cat is lost for one or two days might answer to your call even though, it’s not something he or she does when is at home.

My vet suggested I take the bell off the cat. He said it makes no difference to the killing of wildlife as cat sits motionless until she pounces. Cat is also at a disadvantage when walking round outside with regard to other cats and foxes etc.. Also said it’s a low grade stress inducer as cats have very sensitive hearing.

I just got a collar from amazon that incorporates the airtag into the collar. It's great, so the issue of it being in the way is a non issue. So it makes us feel better that if the cat gets away we at least have some hope of tracking him.

I just bought one today for my cat! Can’t wait ‘til it’s ready to be picked up from the Apple Store. I have an indoor cat who grew up in the countryside so she always wants to go out and sometimes gets lost. Even though she has my phone number and all on her collar, she sometimes wanders way too far and for way too long until someone finds her when she doesn’t go back home. Literally the other day she was gone missing for over 15h, to finally be found by someone… over a mile away from my house !!! And I live in a capital 😅 can’t keep her in all the time, she wants to go out so she should be able to. But I don’t want to be worried about her being out anymore so I think the AirTag (that I will attach to her collar) will definitely be great 😊

You should just put the airtag on the smaller ring that's holding the bigger ring. That's exactly what I did with the one I put on my cat and it works. Actually switch it with the ring with the bell. I also left the bell on my cat's collar and she also has extra collars, maybe you want to take off the one with the airtag when he's inside the house, if you do decide to use it on the cat.
