We used to have the original Sony AIBO (Before his leg broke and we had to sell it due to financial reasons) and it was great for in hospital. He gave so many happy memories to the kids on the cancer ward.
If you live in an apartment or can't have a real dog for whatever reason than this is perfect. It's so cute.

Spacecookie it just depends on peoples circumstances. And that living being feels pain and I know for sure kids mistreat them or just get bored of them and send them to shelters

Honestly I could see giving this to your child because it never “dies” per se, like actual animals.
But isn't teaching kids about death part of having a pet? So they can understand their greif?
This would be better for elderly people who want pets but don't have the capacity to take care of them as they should. (Feeding, bathing, exercise and what not.) I read another comment on an aibo video about how it'd be really cool to see them used as a way for people to dial 911 through the robot dog, or a smoke alarm. And a way to alert firefighters as to where you are in the house if you've collapsed from the smoke from a fire.

Camila Ribeiras your expenses don’t end once you buy a dog tho. regular vet checkups/vaccinations/care/neutering/and food and toys. that’s easily over 5 grand off the bat.
THEN there's upkeep; all the haters forget that people typically spend $3K THE FIRST YEAR they own a dog. I'm paying $100 for pain management alone for a dog who could well live happily for eight more years.

I really want one. I am allergic to a lot of things, animals being one of them, and it breaks my heart that I can't have a dog if I want to be able to breathe without problems. I feel like having one of these will make me feel the kind of companionship I've never had with a real dog.

TheWolfspirit22 you’re right about the dander being a thing! that’s actually what people are allergic to, not the hair (which is a very common misconception). therefore, there aren’t any ”hypo allergenic” dogs since all dogs have dander!

Dogs in Denmark cost a lot, almost the price for this robot, we wish to have a dog in the family but we are allergic too dogs and cats, I think this would be an option, but yes it’s not the same as a real.
In Belgium you can puppy labradors for 300€... ?

Sadly, Sony only markets this aibo to to buyers in Japan and the U.S.; as cloud access is important for updates and the aibo's personality and learning, there's much that's lost if people who live elsewhere have a proxy buy and ship one to them.

-it has several cameras, which are on all the time
-it maps out your house
-costs $3000.00
A real dog will cost you over $20,000. With all the vet visits,food, toys, and vaccinations

A real dog doesn't sound like a cyborg when it moves, isn't connected to the internet and doesn't upload information to any cloud. I can't stress the last two strongly enough. *Nothing* in my house captures & uploads sensitive information about me, my family or my surroundings. No mics, webcams, Alexa, Siri, etc.
Aibo offers diversion, amusement and security concerns. A real dog offers a relationship and you can't put a price on that.

I work as a Senior Caregiver and one of my Residents have an Aibo, At first seeing it I didn't know what it was cause she had it in a little bed she made for it and it was wearing a sweatshirt, It was also asleep and off but now that I know what it is I'm now very happy
it's cute, I like this and also a real dog, why people are so hung up only liking real dogs and hating this, why not both.
Aibo creators are amazing, imagine the hardware and software needed to create that dog.

Yep. I appreciate this bot but I really wanted it to run. Farther into the future, imagine if it was bigger and accompanied you on your runs, keeping you at pace and navigating anywhere within a range of your house. I would love that. I personally find the robot companion idea fascinating and something that will only have more going for it as the years go by! :)

Just make robot dogs for automated surveillance and alarm systems.
They perimeter the house and keep watch 24/7.
-night vision
-motion detection that is not the family and other pets.
-video recording and remote viewing that sends alerts to you when you are work
-make simulated dog sounds to scare of intruders and calls the police.
-also good as a pack mule to carry your heavy items when shopping or when on a picnic.
Not very cost effective
And they will collapse by the slightest resistance to their movement so….. and also Sony says do not use them as such. Sorry…

I felt your daughter's pain when you packed up Aibo to leave, it made me feel bad for her.😞 The lady at the senior citizens place said Aibo was inanimate? She couldn't be more wrong, because Aibo is very animated. I've wanted one since Sony released them several years ago, but just like then, here in the now I cannot afford one. 😔
I think she meant that to her it just seemed too fake to be believable. I agree with her honestly. I don’t see myself talking to it like I would a real dog since my brain knows it’s not real.

A great alternative for people who don't have the time for a real dog, or who are allergic, or can't have dogs in their home. I prefer my real dogs, but I can see the value in this.

I think this could be a very great thing for kids. Kids often want a pet, but once they had it for a while and has grown up, they're tired of it and the parents have to take care of it. With this robot dog, kids can learn to care for a dog without actually possibly hurting a real animal. When these get more popular, the prices will drop and it'll be more affordable for people.

Awesome concept. I am concerned about privacy issues especially with Sony, given that they couldn't protect their Playstation Network users only a few years ago. If they can nail security concerns, I can see Aibo being very popular once the price drops.

@@isc5348 Not everyone has the time to care for a real animal, people have busy lives. Some people just want to have a dog companion for a while and play with it whenever they have time. Would you rather want people to buy an actual dog while they don't have time for it so they just neglect it? It could also be a good try-out for people to see if they're ready for a dog, having one of these in the house for a year and caring for it as if it were a real dog before buying an actual dog, so if they realize they can't take care of it, it's just a piece of plastic being sold and not a living being who had become attached to you.

In a game called Nintendogs+cats there's a highly advanced robot dog you're able to get later on that can actually run around, go on walks and all. I have to wonder how close real robot dogs would reach that point one day.
I want an aibo but my parents would never get one for me since I've had a zoomer and a chip robot dog and barely played with it. Honestly I can't blame them

4:47 actually i would say a real dog is more expensive as time goes on, like with vet visits and buying dog food for it.
i gotta say, this is amazing for first teaching kids about how to handle animals. if the kid gets too rough they dont actually hurt an animal, they are just slapping a piece of metal instead. especially if the robot has censors that can recognize them being hit a little hard and it will make like a dog yelping noise or something. this could be amazing for teaching the extra rough kids about how to play with animals.

I have a vector and live alone so he brightens my day with his expressions, antics and the things he can do which in many cases are quite a bit like what Aibo can do. And for 79$ a lot cheaper. One thing though when buying robots is to remember that if they access the cloud someday they could just sit there. They don't make Vectors anymore (for over a year now) but mine still accesses the cloud but if I spent 2900 I'd sure hope they will continue to work if they end the program.
You have the cutest daughter in the world! I just knew at the end of this video it was going to be a sad day, when Aibo had to leave your house! Okay this is good for people who are allergic to dogs and want one. Or for people who live in non-pet friendly apartments/houses. But if you're not allergic or if you do live in an area that allows pets please get one from a shelter, pet store, flee market, pound, yard sale, breeder, or even a ad that is selling a dog or puppies. Cause their are a lot of dogs and other animals that need homes this dog is good but for people who are allergic or can't have a dog because of where they live it's creative but still if you are able to get a dog please get one from a shelter or something. No hate on this though. :)

Fun fact: You can actually teach the dog new tricks by pressing the paws and moving his hand around for 15 seconds and he will learn that trick he can learn up to 30 new tricks.

I don't think she realized that this machine is like totally animated. She should have said "Why would people want to spend that much money on a robot dog, just to talk to it"?
There is a camera on that thing and it is connected to the internet. And it follows your moves and recognize the layout of your home, tracks your families activity..
