    I have a good idea, You could put a 2" plastic tube in the lower side of the tub ( plastic container ) and conect it with another tub on the side, once the worms have finished filling humus to the top the worms Will go through the 2" tube to their new Home tub for more food. Therefore You won't need to capture your worms.

    I use a 5 gallon bucket for my worm bin snd bury it in the flower bed. I get some gnats, but mostly worms, 2 or 3 leopard slugs, and some crickets. I go thru weeds and kitchen scraps in about 2 weeks I think. I kinda do it the lazy way and don't mess with it too much. My big concern is how it will do in the winter but I also didn't add any worms to my bin. I built it and the worms came.

    I understand you capture the liquid runoff / leachate in the lid that is underneath the bin. Do you just lift off the bin and then pour it from the lid into a watering bucket?

    Congratulations on the birth of your son! I have a few questions. 1) Does the food keep the compost moist or do you have to add water? 2)If your bin becomes full and you don't need the compost yet for your garden, can you store it in another container to use later, and if you can save, for how long? 3) Can these worms be fed to chickens?

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  Před rokem +1

      Thank you, he’s just the best!
      Great questions! The food keeps the compost moist! No need for any extra moisture! If it becomes full you can harvest it and store it! I’ve seen two different ways of storing it, one would be those white bags used for sandbags and the other is actually just a burlap sack! Both of which are breathable so it doesn’t get moldy or anything inside, but I am unsure how long you can store for. I would imagine you could store for quite a while if stored in a cool dry place!
      I wouldn’t feed them chickens or any other kind of meat, just fruits and veggies!

    Im just now educating myself on worm farms and i came across this video. One of the best and well explained by far. But what is the end results, how do you go about selling/harvesting worms and casting. What's the gain if there is any? (Coming from someone who doesnt have a garden and wants a small side hustle)

    I have the same tote and you and unfortunately watched a couple other videos before finding this one today and I didnt know to drill the bottom of the bin. So would it be too stressing now to tilt the bin and drill holes. I fear that letting liquid sit on the bottom is cause alot more moisture to stay in the bin. Any suggestions?

  • @mufialiakoko5442

    Can I not put the burlap in the worm compost bin. Instead I just put a lid on it. Not a burlap.

  • @jamiehill3220
    @jamiehill3220 Před rokem +2

    If you drill holes in the bottom for the worms to pass through, how does that work with the lid at the bottom?

    • @WhitepepperFarmshomestead
      @WhitepepperFarmshomestead  Před rokem +1

      With this setup the holes are mainly for drainage, but all we would need to do to change this to a double tote system would be to add another tote under the tote with holes. With the setup here the lid is mainly to catch anything coming out of the tote so it doesn’t go out onto the floor!

    When I did this years ago i got TONS of babies...... if I scooped up some castings I’d get tons of babies........... I also got fungus ants no matter how well I kept it. I wish I could have got mine to work....it’s a great idea.... I may try again.....

      So far we don’t have any fungus knats so hopefully I can keep it that way. Did you bury your food scraps in there?? I’ve been doing my best to keep it under the soil and so far we don’t have any. Who’s to say what happens a month from now though. So far so good and I’m loving it!
