Remutaka Cycle Trail and Ocean Beach road ride: 0.00 - 19.22 mins
    Wild Coast Track: 19.22 - 32.00 mins
The Remutaka Cycle Trail is an old railway line from Kaitoke Summit to Cross Creek in the Wairarapa. There are awesome historical tunnels to explore and restored railway bridges as well as the new Siberia Stream Swing Bridge along the way. You can then head down to the South Coast towards Ocean Beach and ride the Wild Coast Track that takes you back to Wainuiomata. The rugged coast is best ridden on a mountain bike. You will likely have to walk sections of it, as it gets pretty rough! But it is all good :)
I started the ride at Maymorn Station in Upper Hutt courtesy of my Dad for dropping me off ^_^ I camped overnight at Corner Creek, a DOC campsite at Ocean Beach with toilets and water available (best boil it cause it comes from a rain tank). Overall my journey was approx120kms as the road ride from Cross Creek to Ocean Beach is 37kms, which connects the Remutaka Cycle trail to the Wild Coast Track, and then I rode home! which meant back up the Wainuiomata Coast Road over to Petone and back to Wellington City. There are options to include the Hutt River Trail so check out info online or the Kennett Brother's NZ Cycle Trails book :)
Thank you to Adrian von Ziegler for his beautiful celtic/fantasy music ^_^

I remember walking the Remutaka incline and visiting the elephant seals at Turakirae as a kid. Would Be awesome to ride this with my son. Kia Ora for filming this.

Nice one 🙂 I wish I'd have seen the seals! We're lucky to have such an interesting local trail to explore. You and your son could have an adventure together!

Awesome vid thanks Lizzie, really helpful. Can't wait to do this one myself :) :) really like your choice of music and editing. Would you refill from the stream near corner creek, do you think that's safe water to drink...

Hi Em, thanks for watching! You'll really enjoy it, it's the perfect adventure. I refilled my bottles and CamelBak from the actual tap at the Corner Creek DOC shelter. Some advise against that but I drank 3 litres of it without an issue! I didn't know you could fill from the stream.... Maybe you can? 🤔 Where is the stream? I don't remember seeing it cause I often miss things 😅

Cool, I've been changing my bike up a bit and was thinking about doing this trail as a shake down ride. Nice to get a good look what's around the south coast.

Check out the hidden features I mentioned in the main comment... also there is another track into the summit just behind the train parts that cuts the big sweeping corner north of them.
(also the big crater just north of the parts is the old merry-go-round for the trains (I think that's what the large circle pits at Cross Creek are 8:40))

Great video Lizzie. Love how you 'broke camera' from 10:20-11:20 😂. Is the same Trek you rode The Rainbow on?

    Bungee's... Never trust them.
7:06 there's a waterfall on the left of the tunnel exit (left from this view, or 'as you enter') and on the right side there is a window with another waterfall behind it.
The water coming from the right passes underneath the camera and out to the right.. If you walk down the creek on the right you can walk through a small tunnel cut through the rock (about 6ft diameter).
Further down, just before entering the tunnel above Siberia there is an oft missed rest and viewing platform (on the right as you travel down, at the end of a 20meter ish track (so quite close to the main track).
Although there is now a swing bridge across Siberia, the old track goes left before the bridge and allows access to the stream and closer inspection of the Dam drain tower. (Track and tower visible at 7:46. This is the site of the rail disaster when wind blew a train from the tracks as it crossed the (I think it was a dam then, not the previous rail bridge) killing one boy.
The last time I did this "Big Coast' ride... we were dropped off at at 5pm at 3:33 and camped on the plateau just behind the Summit 'Buss stop" 6:07
In the morning I made it into the main tunnel, stood up and immediately broke the bolt clamping my seat to the post.
I then rode all the way to 26:56 alternating side saddle, with the seat perched precariously on the post and camped.. then on to the catchpool (seen in that same signpost) next morn for pickup...
Basically I became a temporary Italian... "Mr Sorassio".

I hadn't bungy-ed the cord through my jandals, just over them! Method changed for good now 😅
Sounds like you know the area rather well and have had a misadventure along the way!

@@lizzievarley3545 I love riding up the incline... Last time I did it from the Tunnel Gulley park but that climb was a bit much to start the day for a downhiller.
(I've only done the big coast once... I think riding it on my 7" Freeride bike may kill me, but the incline section I used to do on the Foes with 26"x3" tyres.
I've been spending more time playing Disc Golf than riding at the mo.. Actually meet more people and get to talk... some.

@@TheButlerNZ The type of bike you have can really determine your experience 😅 I once rode the coast track on a fully loaded touring bike 700c slicks with side panniers as part of a North Island tour and even finished on Super Plus from Wainui. Good to know you're playing frisbee golf - I saw those contraptions and wondered what they were 😀

@@lizzievarley3545 If ever you have a hankering to throw plastic at trees... I learn ya.
I did the coast on my Avanti Barracuda with old RST forks (Vee front, disk rear).... and no seat post bolt.... Of and Bob on the handlebars... it musta been circa 2000.

Many years ago there was a ride called the "Hillary Commission Big Coast Mountain Bike Ride" basically a shorter version of what you did here, a fun ride indeed.
