Refreshing tutorial and super handy tips, especially the light grey and white combo!
Glad you enjoyed it! I will have to come back to this one and make a part 2!
Best mini painting content on YT no question
Oh man! Doing the dry brush prep on a sponge is a brilliant idea!!
Thank you, it was a bit of trial and error, as i was getting irritated by the fibers of tissue - i think those thin kitchen sponges would work nicely too , the ones that are pretty thin and come in like 5 pack from a pound shop :)
I love it!!
just started again because of you. Love your videos
Amazing! thank you very much, I'm glad that i could help and be a part of your hobby journey :):)
What are you starting with?
The sponge trick was very interesting, another way of painting cloacks is with these new speed paints, also the GW's contrast could be used (I tried Ceramite White and it's good)
Thanks! i like to test things out and experiment at times and se what happens.
Yes im looking forward to using them, i hope to crack my set open tomorrow and try them on some Morannon orcs :)
I’ve never thought about using a makeup brush like this great video
Oh they are great! They come in pretty handy for painting miniatures, and the really big ones that come in the set are great for dusting miniatures too! :):)
Thanks for the tips. I’m painting a Spawn model cause I love comics and this works great on his red cape!
Commenting so you get more views. Great video. You do a great job of not only explaining miniature painting concepts, but showing the how and the why.
Thank you very much for taking the time to comment! :) Yes this one was an interesting video to produce as i had so many notes and ideas compared to the simpler 'how to paint xyz' video
I learned a nice amount from using these and i just wanted to portray that in the video and try to make it flow easy enough to follow along :)
Great tutorial!
Thank you very much!! Plus, i loved your scenery contribution to Lachies super big project down under, i really liked the details that you created :):)
Thanks so much for this video! I’m definitely going to use the white cape process on an aiel-inspired color scheme for my Khainite Shadowstalkers for Warcry
oo that would look cool!! I totally forgot that those minis existed - and i like Dark Elves haha
Glad that you have found the video useful though! :):)
Well you made that look easy! Make up brushes for the win!
Thank you! I like easy and clear, gives me more time to do more hobby!! :):)
Perfect timing, just started my dwarf rangers cloaks and they’re looking much nicer now
oh thats fantastic news! Im very happy to hear that you are ready to rock with some Dwarf rangers - maybe they will see some Easterlings soon on the battlefield? :)
Love all the middle earth models. The purple is gorgeous too.
Thank you very much!! It's my favourite range of miniatures to paint :)
I tempted to go with the purple too - i'm starting some elves soon and i'm torn between a few cloak colours!
@@SwordsandBrushes Myself too. I've had an elf army for a few years but I think I'm a lot better at painting now and will start a new force. But trying to replicate the cloaks in the Hobbit for Rivendell soldiers is extremely difficult! They have a sort of shimmery silver camouflage. I'll probably just stick with purple!
Agreed they have an unusual finish to them, i have a Finecast Thranduil which i was thinking of doing something similar with but ive put that to one side for the moment until i feel ready to paint him - knowing me though i will probably do something totally different! haha
Just got into the hobby and these videos have been great help
Welcome to the hobby! It's always lovely to see new people starting out - it's the super exciting stage!! What are you starting with?
And im glad that my little corner here on youtube can be of service to you! The aim is to create easy to follow guides that could help all sorts of hobbyists - and I think of ideas that i would have liked to see when i started out too :):)
@@SwordsandBrushes started with some high elves. Looking to get some evil teams now
oo there is a lot to potentially go for! what are your first thoughts?
@@SwordsandBrushes I have some moria goblins so I was looking at grabbing the Balins tomb box and follow along your tutorial. Then grab the starter box for the witch king and orcs
That is a great plan! You will certainly get good value for that box set with the amount you get in it :) I started painting horses this week for the Rohan side :)
Excellent tutorial. Planning on picking up Journeys in Middle-Earth, and I expect to be painting a ton of cloaks for it
I'm "binging" on your videos AND heading to the Dollar Store to get a bunch of Make-Up Brushes!!! Thanks Chris! - Tom
Fantastic, i do find that they are a birlliant tool to have in your painting arsenal.
Just watch out for the really cheap "plastic/synthetic" bristled brushes, they are too hard and wont work nearly as good as a soft haired brush. I learned this early on! :)
Green cloak would be great
Showing how to do the classic rohan green cloak and/or how to paint rohan warriors with speedpaint. Or the elven cloaks that the fellowship is garbed in would be cool.
Hey I’m looking at getting into the hobby and are currently looking at what paints to get. I seen at the beginning of the video you had three reds (dark, medium and bright) is this usually the general rule of thumb when getting paints?
And advice would be amazing even a video would really help.
I’m getting confused with all the different videos and the warhammer paints arnt helping as there are thousands of them 😂
Nice! A warm welcome to the hobby (if you do decide to jump in!)
Yes there are so many companies out there!
I would say it is one way of painting, usually a base colour (the darkest) a mid colour (slightly lighter) and then a bright colour for a highlight) - but there are a few other ways to achieve that - such as using washes/shades or speedpaints - but i wont complicate matters in a message - just try and watch a few videos on the channel and i think you will get to digest a few methods :)
Theres a few main ones that come to mind...
I cant comment much on Vallejo as i have only used their airbrush paints and they are nice enough with a massive amount of colours to chose from - i find that some are so close in colour that i cant tell the difference really after you put washes and highlight son them.
I used GW paint for over 10 years and then now use army paints so i can say that from my experience that both ranges are pretty good. The paint is very similar and the colour range is nice - but i do prefer Army painter shades compared to GW washes - they just seem to flow better.
Id say if you can find a local hobby store that may have some open paints that you can try then give them a go - or perhaps get a few colours to did your toe in - such as some browns, greens and metallics - as they would be used more often than not on all manner of projects.
In terms of brushes - my favourite are Winsor and Newton series 7, they last the longest for me but are the most expensive, i use them with a combination of Army painter as i find them to be a solid brush (but less expensive) for what i need them for - and i paint A LOT! haha
I hope that helps a bit? :):)
I'm reasonably certain I've asked for this before, but I can't remember where, and this video seems the most natural place to poke you about it. Elven cloaks. Teach us how to paint them to get that amazing look that looks both light green and grey at the same time! Preferably using speedpaints!
Ah yes elven cloaks would be a good one, maybe i will revisit this video and do a part two! :):)
@@SwordsandBrushes I've done one elven cloak with speedpaint, but not entirely happy with it, so a guide would be great, yes please! :-)
Thanks for the video, I've been checking your stuff and it is really good. Could I ask your advise on something? I mainly use army painter, really enjoying the speed paint range. I am trying to use your method to paint black clothes, do you have any suggestions here?
Thanks in advance
Thank you very much, im glad that you are liking the content so far :)
Oh yes! for speed paints i LOVE doing black! However it's through an airbrush, ive not really tried it with a brush so far - due to the projects ive been working on - but i reckon they should work.
i tend to spray a model black and then airbrush a mid tone grey (nothing too bright and not white!) but leaving the black in the recesses slightly.
Afterwards, then cut back in with some type of colour e.g blue, purple - to get some coloured tones in there. Let it dry and then black that in over the top. Works very nicely.
Id probably try the same colours but paint them by brush - i have some evil miniatures coming up soon so may try it out! :)
@@SwordsandBrushes thank you so much for the detailed answers. I have no airbrush, but I'll give it a go to see how does it go. What do you mean by cut back in some blue/purple, highlights?
Not a problem, sorry i mean you can add a layer of a coloured paint such as blue or purple ( this can go over the mid tone grey - and it will come out with a subtle dark version of the paint you are applying.
Then after thats dry add some black into the recesses - this will make you blacks darker for the shadows and also darken down the coloured areas slightly.
It's a bit awkward trying to explain it in just text, so i. will add it to my list and make a CZcams short of it haha :)
@@SwordsandBrushes Thank you so much again. If i get a chance to try it before, I'll share the results.
I'm immediately checking through your playlists to dee if you made a Haldir's Elves video
Someone is asking about some Elves as a commission for me to do, if that ends up on my desk i will be sure to do a video on the golden boys! :)
Purple is a really handy one for me at the moment. Painting up 750 points of Easterlings with the red replaced with purple.
Awesome! I think a lot of Easterlings are going to be painted this year, what do you think of the new stuff from the Warhammer community page so far?
And i would love to see your Easterlings once you have finished them! :):)
@@SwordsandBrushes I can't wait to get the pre order on Saturday, the new models look so cool. Once they are painted up, I'll share them on your Facebook page for sure.
Im glad that Middle Earth is getting some love with the new figures, very much looking forward to seeing the next book too!
Also that would be great! I always love seeing what people get upto in our hobby :)
Very useful! I’m about to paint thirty Mirkwood Rangers….
oh cool! hope you have fun doing them! Let me know how you get on and what you did :)
I have got a whole bunch of Blackroot vale to get through on my desk and they all have cloaks - so it's the make up brush for them! haha
I don't want you to paint Haldirs Elves, I NEED you to paint Haldirs Elves! As always, great tutorial, I've learned a lot! I'm going to try all three methods on some of my spare Rivendell Elves, since I'm curious what the result will be on a much flatter surface.
Also a question to you, what is your experience with Army Painter? I hear a lot of mixed feelings about their range, some people think the paint is too thick, other people love it. Love to hear your thoughts!
consider it added to my list! I have some haldir elf minis and some last alliance ones to get through myself as well!
It's a good idea testing out on some spare miniatures, with the larger flatter cloaks i dont thing you would need much pressure to build up the layers.
The Elrond and Nazgul photos at the end of the video came out nice enough for me with make up brushes, and it's something that im testing out more and more for different miniatures - monsters are perfect for them too!
In terms of Army painter, i really like the range - I was a pure GW person back in. the day, as its all that i knew and i used the citadel paint range for 10+ years before i made the switch.
I switched over to Army painter when they introduced products that i didnt know about before which were coloured sprays that match paints and then the dips which were spot on for mass painting.
The paints themselves are very very simillar in my mind, in terms of thickness, regardless of brand i will always add a touch of water to thin down so i can paint a bit smoother, but the main things i like are: the colour range, the dropper bottles, and the shade paints - i have also got my hand on the speed paints so i will test them out.
I would suggest, if you are intrigued by them - try a paint and see what you think - perhaps a black or a metallic and even a Dark Tone - and you could compare for yourself :):)
Hope that helps a bit?
@@SwordsandBrushes Just to be clear, I just meant the whole HAldir's elves tutorial. But yes, solid review, Army Painter makes a solid line. It falls down compared to gw in SOME places but is a fair bit cheaper. Reliable brand i use all the time. I use their offwhites and quickshades ALL the time
@@SwordsandBrushes Thank you so much for this review! I've recently bought a set of the Vallejo Paints, and so far I'm impressed. However, Vallejo is hard to find where I live...
So I think the next colour I run out of is going to be an Army Painter colour. I'm very curious what they will be like.
By the way... Can't wait for Sam and his special guest to be painted :D
Deffo be using the red cloak method on my Ad Mech, now to go steal the missus make up brushes 😂
haha dont let her know! - oh yes that would work a treat for Ad Mec Cloaks, you could even try another technique and do a stiplling motion on the vehicles too! :):)
Would be nice to see you do a yellow that bloody colour trolls me to the darkside!!
@@SwordsandBrushes look forward to that as i another yellow cloak to do, the last one had hints of green!! No idea what i did there!! 🤦♂️☹️😂😂
Any chance of some horse tutorials? A couple of different colours would be great
I dont think you would need to be waiting long for that my friend! I start work on the Pelennor fields this week and i have a number of horse tutorials planned for them :)
Any chance at a discord group in the future? Would love to share my progress with others and discuss mini painting/lotr 😅
That sounds like a brilliant idea, it's something that i have added to my notes of potential to do's - as im just starting out on youtube myself i have many ideas and a limited time to do everything.
I would have to look into Discord, as i dont use it myself but have seen it in action via a livestream for a tech channel., so i would need to watch a quick tutorial to see how it works and how to set it up!
It looks like a great way for a community to get together, do you currently use it for anything?
@@SwordsandBrushes Currently I use it to play games of Magic the Gathering with strangers and am part a few hobby groups. I'm not sure how much work there is in setting it up and keeping it running but I imagine you'd need some community moderators.
Thanks for offering! (jokes) sounds like a good thing to have, i think i will do some research on it from this weekend onwards - at the moment im listening to the Lord of the Rings audio book this week whilst i paint! :)
Flayed one flesh cloak
That would be a cool one to do! Maybe i can get a Dark Elf of something Chaos for that one! :)
Who undercoats in gold?
Gold is spot on for my elves, i've used it in the past for Stormcast and Custodes for 40k, as soon as its down, thats half the job done right there :):)
Would be really cool to see a group or rangers but all the cloaks done with different tones of greens and browns, so even though the colours are the same it would be as if they had different shades due to wear and obtaining them in different places
That sounds like an excellent idea my friend and one i may kindly steal if i may haha :):)
@Swords and Brushes absolutely please do, it would totally give me some indication then, it always bugs me when rangers have the same uniform cloaks, I feel it would be more lf a mix and match of greens and browns you know, even more autumnal maybe, I dunno, feel like it would be easier to spot 100 rangers all in one colour than to have them in a mix. But yeah I'm not sure how to execute it so would be happy for you to try =)
That purple cloak is so dang cool looking!!!! It's truly criminal how rarely purple is used!
Thank you kindly! :)
Yeh im thinking i will do some of my elves in this purple - breaks up just gold and blue really!
