So glad you mentioned the unior cassette lock ring tool. Left me high and dry one time and I’ll never cheap out on a tool like that again.
Thanks for watching and commenting :) unior 👎
Excellent, excellent video! Fwiw, up to now I've used a park tool cassette tool fr 5.2 in which I've drilled a hole (RIP drill bits) perpendicularly in conjunction with a 5 mm allen key to get leverage. Works great for tightening things and sometimes for loosening too. With some fiddling. Sometimes. Like 40% of the time. Or maybe 25%. This seems like a much better (and bit lighter) solution. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing! Ride on :)
Seeing my cassette as the one that locked up really drove this home

Thank you for reviewing these! I've been looking to add this to my kit and will be purchasing one before my Idaho Hot Spring ride this June. Your channel is an amazing resource. Thank you!
Mike, thanks for your kind words... have a blast on the Hot Springs ride... it's gorgeous, and you'll have a blast :)
Had it with me on the GDMBR section ride I did last summer, good piece of mind. Never needed it but that’s the way it goes-good luck charm to keep the cassette tight.
Thanks for sharing, Matthew :) Ride on!
Definitely a must have on any bikepacking trip.
Thanks for watching and chiming in, Spy vs Spy - definitely a little piece of mind :)
Great review even better with the GDMBR footage. 30$ for handmade tool that can salvage an otherwise trip ending cassette problem seems like a no brainer. Can only imagine how much time/money goes into preparing for and attempting a GDMBR run.
thanks for watching, and for taking the time to comment, DB_Cooper :) ride on!!!
I have the same problem of breaking two spokes on the drive side NOW! I need that NOW!
Thanks for watching and commenting, August - I appreciate your time :) Ride on!
good to know. i have had a similar issue on my sram 10s cassette on my handcycle. The cassette lock nut came loose and jammed up. naturally, i didn't have a cassette tool with me and had to scratch. I started carrying a typical cassette tool with me since then.
For reference, the Hyper-Cracker is 40 gr. I dug mine out of the bottom of my toolbox. Never tested or used it in the field.
thanks for chiming in, Oldan Slo (love the name, btw :) - ride on!!
Good stuff!👍
Thanks, much appreciated!
Very informative, thanks Alan
Thanks for watching!!! Ride on :)
I switched to direct spoke hubs long time ago. No need to remove the cassette to change spoke.
thanks for sharing :)
THE review I was waiting for
Edit : Amazon link sadly shows unavailable
Yeah.... and on Ebay they are 10 bucks more expensive
I'd go directly to Jim's website - and buy straight from him... or at least shoot him an email, so he can let you know when he has them back in stock? ride on!
I use a pamir hyper cracker from the 90s....
Thanks for watching!
Interesting tool
Are you talking about me or the cassette remover :) -- Ride on!
I have the unior tool. I have tested it with two of my gx eagle cassettes and found out that they are slightly different. One has its splines deeper under the 10t cog and the tool simply does not reach them. The other one is ok.
Very interesting, lonlvan1994 - thanks for sharing :)... and reiterating that all of these types of tools need to be tested ahead of time and not just assumed they'll work with every bike/drivetrain combo... ride on!
Ive got a hope hub so if I'm desperate, i can just yank the cassette and driver off. Getting the seal seated back in though, would probably be a headache.
Thanks for sharing! Ride on :)
rad
Thanks for watching 🙏 ride on!
A Hope Hub makes this a non issue
Pretty sure I addressed hubs that allow you to remove the freehub shell w/cassette attached, in the video? Anyhoo, thanks for chiming in 👍
how much coffee do you drink before these videos?
Thanks for watching and commenting, Steve :)
At 1:17, I believe loctite needs about a day to cure in place.
Yes, loctite takes about 24 hours to fully cure. But seeing how Brian was 2750 miles into a 2800 mile race, totally sleep deprived and running on fumes when he made this video... I doubt he was considering that :) Thanks for commenting, ride on!!
Plus, I didn’t actually have loctite. I said loctite, but I meant super glue.
Dislike for not puting a link to brians channel/ social media
Good point - Brian doesn’t have a CZcams channel, but I’ll ask him if it’s ok for me to add his social media… ride on 🤙
