My 7 year old daughter watched this with me after being told by a boy at a home depot kids build that power tools aren't for girls. She was excited and watched more videos, commenting on all the cool tools. Thank you being a positive example for my daughter.

April, your page is such an inspiration! I used to post a lot of how to videos on my page before I went deaf. Because of creators like you i recently decided to start uploading content again even though my audio may not be up to par like it used to be. Just like you I love to teach people new things! Thank you!

  • @northcountryhermit5057

Nice build! I built my first woodshed a year ago 9' x 4' x 7' ...I got all my materials from the landfill. Someone was throwing away 4" solid oak tounge-groove flooring, which had splintered upon rip up...so I put both sides through the table saw, ripping them to 3.5" ea. The flooring is pallets covered with 3/4" scrap plywood. The roofing is also scrap plywood covered with rubber sheet...from a H.S. basketball court- landfill obtained concrete blocks were set in-ground, and 4x4s of varying lengths were motise/tennoned and fastened together to create 4 usable 8' posts...
I added a 4x2x6' "cactus display" rack that Lowes was tossing...onto the side, and enclosed it with a broken fence panel that I bought from Lowes for $8.
I used birch trees from my property to accent the posts, and used birchbark as trim for the door...which has bear skull, a coyote skull, and old bow saws...

That's a nice piece, and it doesn't require a lot of expensive tools to make, either. A drill and circular saw (or miter saw) would be enough to crank that out. Thanks for sharing!

You sure have came a long way April. I remember subscribing to your channel close to 3 years ago and just watching it grow has been amazing. I don't know what I find so interesting about watching people build things but its so satisfying. I don't do any woodworking, I don't even own a saw.

Guess Who I agree! It's been so fun to watch her skills grow. When I first started watching she seemed like someone getting into a hobby. Now? She's whipping out all kinds of projects that I could only imagine making. All the different media she's learned to use, the tools she's gained, the shop. Amazing.

She has literally turned this into a career, I’m not sure if she has a “normal” job otherwise but if not she has the best hobby set up ever, as she doesn’t do contract work or customer commissions.

You and Cody seem like the kind of people that would love one and get tons of use out it! It could be a whole long video series with other videos sprinkled in along the way. I know it’s a huge project but just an idea!

I love that design. Since I’m kind of OCD and I love to maximize space. Since you went through all of the trouble to make a nice roof for the wood shed I would place it on the outside of the tiny home exterior wall. Since it’s a tiny home I would want to maximize any outside living space and that huge overhang offers a great place to have a sitting area allowing the user to have a place to stretch out. Maybe add a fire 🔥 pit just off of the outside sitting area for a nice relaxing evening and easy access to the firewood 🪵 shed. Just my opinion. Thanks for sharing.

I've been looking at different design options for one of these lately and so far, I like yours best. Once winter is over (Northwestern Ontario Canada) and the snow is gone, I think I'll make one similar to yours but a little longer and with a heavy duty roof to withstand snowpack loads.
great video and great choice of wood. Western red cedar...I go through thousands of dollars of it every year.

The only trouble with perfectly square and carefully built items like this is when you have to put them on hard surfaces that are not level, or to be fair need a camber for water drainage. When it was put in place at it's final location it appears to be lopsided, but only because of the concrete surface it rests on. That undermines all your careful work. It would be fine on an earth surface but perhaps consider adding advice on shimming or adding levelling feet to the design. Other than that, you have made a charming and helpful video.

hey April - great wood storage. The 2 most important decisions you made were to use cedar and to have slats, not closed The cedar is best for outdoor projects and slats for the better air flow. Air flow is key .

When building the floor on these kind of projects I install the screws from the bottom to eliminate exposed screw holes that trap water. I try to place the projects on limestone or gravel to give the wood good drainage. That is a beautiful guest house and with that much of a firewood supply I think you will have a hard time to get guests to leave or help with projects.

Thank you for being a great example for young girls in the trades, as is my cousin who was the first female to be a metal fabricator in Alberta Canada. Poster of her were placed in high schools to encourage other girls to take trades as a career.

It’s a beautiful wood rack, but there is one fairly big problem. With that roof sloping the way it is, it will launch any water that lands on it towards the shed. Furthermore, if it snows there, it will trap snow between it and the shed. Both of these situations are not only bad for the shed, they will keep the firewood damp as well.

You may already know of this method of stacking green firewood known as a "Holz Hausen". It works great for me here it CT. and I do not use a tarp or any cover of any type - check it out - lots of examples to be found on the internet. It is hard to believe that green firewood can be dried out using this method.
