I just found out Tom Dula and the Foster girls were all cousins of mine. William Kendall/Kindall married Sarah Foster who moved to Wilkes County with her 6 children, a brother, and 2 or 3 sisters around 1777 after her husband, William, died in VA. William and Sarah had James Benjamin Kindall (also my line) who married Mary "Polly" Dula who was the sister of Bennett Dula who was Tom Dula's grandfather. Also a grandson of James Kindall married Tom Dula's sister Selena before they, and most of the Kindall clan, moved to Georgia.
(My grandfather changed our surname back to the original KE spelling).
So I guess you guys are all MY cousins, too! I'm 64 and live in Boise, Idaho.

I read an article about the song Tom Dooley and I learned that Anne Melton stabbed Laura Foster but Tom Dula was blamed for the murder. And he was hung from a white oak tree. And he didn’t kill her.

I don't condemn their morals or behaviors. Syphilis killed in that time. After the Civil War, the missing men, the upheavals in personal life, the unease of marriages that occurred too young for many people, and the actual physical hunger of the population, as in all wars/post-war periods, caused personal upheavals in civil order. Rather Tom Dooley did the murder, or didn't, he took the punishment. It was a tragedy for all concerned. The adultery wasn't unique, or uncommon. Look around you. See any human behaviors that aren't the same now? The song tells of human beings who suffered. I heard it seven decades ago. I'm thankful it has survived to tell us of those lives.

James William Moore Grayson did not hang Tom. Dula was a fugitive working for Grayson to get a new pair of boots. Grayson, a former union officer, turned Tom into the authorities. Grayson's nephew, Gilliam Grayson ( born 1887), wrote the song.

@@johnmcculley9194 - correct, that is what I understand. Tom was fooling around with several women at once and one gave him syphilis, which he passed along to Laura and her cousin Ann Foster Melton. It appears that Ann was the true love of Tom''s life and the actual killer of Laura, but Tom fessed up to protect Ann, later he said that he "didn't harm a hair on that girl's head". He was tried twice and lost both times. It appears they hung an innocent man.
