  • www.PondMegastore.com pot a waterlily, re-pot an over crowded waterlily, divide a waterlily. Rhizomes grow in straight lines so point the growth tip in a direction to grow across a pot. When it reaches that side of the pot. It is time to re-pot it again. Some hardy lilies grow rapidly others are slower. N. Wanvisa (as in video), N. mexicana are two fast types of growing lilies. Do not cover the crown of the plant with stones, common practice with new water gardeners.

    Covid kept me from meeting you, Ken. But I spent a lot of time taking care of your garden today. I'll be back there tomorrow, with Larry. I hope we can make you and Tim proud.

    Once upon a time someone told me absolutely to never plant my waterlilies in the native soil, unaware that heavy clay is pretty exclusively what the native soil here is. The only thing I'm careful about is pieces of root and excessive worms/insects going in with it. I figure the fish don't need the encouragement to dig there.

    Do all hardy water lilies spread like that? I bought one at a store last year and I'm hoping it spreads so I can separate them.

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  Před 10 lety

      Yes all hardy's have rhizomes. Some split slower than others but most you can 'purchase' are easy and multiply 1-3 rhizomes per year. Wanvisa multiplies like a weed though. Did you plant yours in soil where it can stretch it's legs - more room for hardies the easier this is?

    Hello, I'm making a water garden in a pot. I've bought a water lily from a local nursery, my question is do you need special filtered water for the plant? Also, this lily is in a 6" or so pot. Do I need to plant in soil like some of these videos are showing?

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  Před 7 lety

      Yes it needs to be planted properly (in soil). No it does not need special water.

    How can I keep my pond from getting all muddy when I put this in the pond?

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  Před 7 lety

      If you use loam soil it will not come out of the pot. If you use something like potting soil it will float around and be muddy ... rivers, lakes, ponds in nature are all soil based and are not muddy unless something is upsetting the mud. Koi and water lilies wont be happy together, koi will dig up the mud. Goldfish are fine though.

    When is the best time to divide my water lily tuber? Before winter or before summer?

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  Před 5 lety +2

      Divide Perennial hardy water lilies between spring emergence out of dormancy and then up to 8 weeks prior to first frost if you live where there are cold winters. In hot climates you can divide anytime.

    how do you keep fish from digging out the soil? will all that fertilizer cause the algae to bloom?

    • @ArcticFoxInABox
      @ArcticFoxInABox Před měsícem

      The fish, known as Gambusia or mosquitofish, are too small to dig anything up nor do they want to dig it up because their diet consists of small bugs, mostly mosquitoes.
      The fertilizer will not cause the algae to bloom because, during repotting, the fertilizer is in between two layers of dirt so only the water lilies can reach it.

      if there is organic material breaking down yes, also a solid container will smell much more than a fabric bag or somewhere air can help grow more bacteria.

    I dont get it, what part of the water lilly tube is supposed to be facing the edge of the container? surly the cut part of the tube grows, but you planted that part facing towards the edge so in theory it wouldn't be able to grow, I am so confused some help me :S

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  Před 7 lety +1

      The part all the leaves are coming out of is the growing end ... the cut end is no longer growing so it goes against the pot and down into the mud. The living end is the 'growing tip' or crown, both sides do not grow.

      There are perennial (winter hardy) waterlilies and also tropical waterlilies. The one shown here with a rhizome for a root system is hardy. Tropicals make tubers when stressed to reproduce. Quite different from one another and easy to tell apart.

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  Před 8 lety

      +Emmy Zhang Well you need to plant it properly, unfortunately most sellers have no clue what they are doing, also some sell them bareroot because the size container is not easily carried outside a truck. Did you buy it locally or have it shipped? The lily absolutely wont do anything if not properly planted, fertilized, and in direct sun.

    • @twistluv
      @twistluv Před 8 lety

      pondmegastore I bought it locally from a huge local plant seller (about 1 month+ ago). They have this huge place full of all type of different plants. I saw this water lily with 2 flowers and it was so pretty! I bought it home and within 3 days the flower died. There was a flower bud right at the bottom and I was comforted, unfortuately for some reasons the flower bud never grew, seemed to turned black... I eventually cut it off, and no more flower buds ever since .. Even though there's no pot, the soil is still all pack together at the center of the pound, its not scattered around. not sure how they did it. I also use a ferterlizer tablet and was advice to use only once every 2 weeks. I have only use twice so far, I push it right into the center of the soil. but still no flowers =/ It's place at my balcony where there is full day sunlight and at least 4 hours of direct sunlight. Its growing new leafs everyday though... I am from Singapore by the way. Thanks so much for your reply! =)

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  Před 8 lety

      +Emmy Zhang If it is a tropical lily the pot wont need to be so wide, they are heavy feeders so a few tablets a month is proper. 25-30 cm pot would be ok with heavy soil and fertilizer, the root sits at mud level, just roots below. The new bud aborted because the plant was disturbed. If new leaves are coming up that is good. Hopefully your pond / pot is at least 1 meter wide. More leaves and bigger leaves the more flowers. If new leaves are smaller than the old leaves it is struggling or out of food. new leaves must be at least the same size or larger if planted properly.

    • @twistluv
      @twistluv Před 8 lety

      pondmegastore ahhh the leaves now are much smaller, and seems torn at the side.. unable to grow to its usual size... not sure why... XD I'm afraid of over feeding it and causing the roots to die out

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  Před 7 lety
