The comparison to the comic book industry is completely apt. Especially if you think about it's timeline. The comic industry in the 90's was 30 years removed from the resurgence of comic books from the 60's where Marvel had just introduced it's now historic line of characters from X-Men/Spider-Man/Hulk/Fantastic 4/ etc. Comics peaked in the 90's and nearly bankrupted Marvel because they kept printing ubiquitous amounts of special editions. They flooded the market. Lo and Behold, 30 years in and WoTC is doing the same thing. They think that the secondary market is there for them to control and not us. Magic won't disappear, the game is healthy enough but I'm sure Hasbro's higher up are starting to feel the pressure, especially after their stock dropped.
I have non-magic playing friends who have heard about this situation. The community is doing a good job banding together.
The Prof keeps his back straight despite being close to I guess everyone in the inner circle. Heck I'd even say he is part of it. I think he deserves (more) credit for it.
It's pointless to shut down Conjurer. You can take a basic land and scribble "Black Lotus" on it, and just use that as a proxy. THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO STOP PROXYING.
Iv never used proxies before, but now I’m using my Chinese black lotus that looks better than wizards reprint. I’m ok with them now.
Yugioh and Pokemon collector here! Just wanted to say hope things works out for the MTG community after hearing about this cancerous news.
During the next 6 months, we will see 30th anniversary boosters and/or single cards going on eBay for more than people are willing to spend on it. Hopefully they won't sell well, and the few whales who bought them will realize they won't be able to make a profit of them.
I haven't bought a single card for the last three years and I don't plan on doing so ever again. CC has been perfect for making decks that look amazing with fully themed frames and artwork that I otherwise wouldn't be able to have. It being taken down is a blow to the community as it sets a higher bar for those who could like to start learning how to make their own.
Thank you for pointing out the bullshit c&d of card conjurer. I was genuinely upset to see it happen and it still hurts because I spent a lot of hours on that site and made well over 100 custom cards from alt art cards featuring mcu characters to just meme cards to get a laugh out of my boys. I hope to see it back online soon but with wizards being greedy, my faith is thin.

I don’t blame Collector Boosters, I blame that luxury binder with an uncut sheet that was actually a cut sheet they sold in Eldraine with a prohibitive price tag. That was the point where WotC started to push more and more.

I had no idea that the custom card site existed, but I’m sad it’s gone because I immediately thought, “that’s a thing?? I want to make some cards!!” Now I can’t. They not only hurt they’re current customers, they killed chances of new ones like me… big brain move right there 🙄

So in Pokemon, you can get any of the special cards via normal booster packs for 2-5$. Wotc killed themselves by taking out the chance to get a great card via a normal booster. 😢
it's really sad because as a long time hobbyist, I have trade binders and deck boxes in my closet that I haven't brought out in months. I'm going through my old trade binders going "wow, this is worthless (now)". I remember baseball cards from when I was a kid, they were printed on literal metal, holofoil that simulated motion, basically any gimmick that they thought little kids like me would buy because they would hold value. Well we did back then, but we're not no more.
I like to imagine that the reserve list cards shooting up in price being a result of how they've killed standard, so people decide to move to eternal formats.
I thinknyou touched on an important point near the end. Part of the value in cards is the resale value. If these aren't able to be resold at a profit, lot of large investors are going to start getting mad at WotC also.
Solid points, I have drasticly changed the way I buy MTG. I no longer buy boxes to complete a playset of all cards in the regular sets. In fact I just buy some boxes because I enjoy cracking packs. I buy singles to get playsets of cards I want. I buy Reserve List cards for now…until they trash the Reserve List.
