      I totally agree. There is hardly any better feeling than somehow happening upon an amazingly competent, quality, experienced mentor in any area and this guy is Grade AAA quality. Invaluable. Only thing that would be better would be if he lived on my street. I would somehow find a way to become indispensable to him (my wife’s biscuits, her chicken and dumplings, etc., might prove critical in that department), and I would listen, listen, listen, as much as he cared to talk about pretty much whatever he felt like talking about and felt important. But this is the next best thing!!!

    What a blessing it is to be able to go on youtube and glean so much wisdom from a great teacher. So refreshing to get some meat as opposed to the watered down crap that so prevalent out there. Thanks for giving up your time in order for all of us to benefit from your experience. I have 3 boys and all of them will be made to watch your videos. My oldest (14) got his first deer rifle this year. It was a 7mm-08. I made him watch your video about that cartridge and he now has an appreciation for what a great cartridge that is and me as well being that I own one myself!! We've learned a tremendous amount these last few months and we thank you for it. Might go out here and teach myself how to shoot my pistol better now!!

    I have been watching these videos shortly after discovering them. I have been shooting for over 50 years and am an instructor and one conclusion I have come to was how much I "didn't" know or nasty habits I didn't know I picked up. I am sure that by applying the information presented here that if I applied them, it would make me a better marksman and gun owner. Never TOO old to learn.
    Thanks for an excellent set of instructional videos and thank you for your service.

    The radius is the distance from origin to any point. Because the origin is always the same fixed point and the distance (radius) is always the same in any direction, a circle is created. Not that it matters, like you said.

    I was thinking the same thing about the site radius terminology. On guitars, we call the distance between the nut and the 12th fret (and 12th fret and the bridge) the scale length. It is a straight line. We call the curve of the fretboard the fretboard radius. The second I heard that term for the site distance, I thought I had missed some vital information, or something. Thank you for talking about that! And thank you for your information on site alignment and how important that understanding is. I will never forget that!

    For reference and general comparison/comment; I worked at a Boy Scout Camp as shooting sports director. My rifle shooting merit badge students were required, at 50 feet, to shoot five targets with five rounds (.22LR), where a quarter (that is, a U.S. 25 cent coin about 7/8 of an inch or so) when placed on the target, could cover or touch all five holes. Most of my students had never held a firearm prior and ranged from 10 to 17 years old. We spent about 8 hours shooting over the course of a week, and the vast, vast majority of them were able to achieve this level of marksmanship without having to come for extra practice. From my observation the most important factors for shooting well seemed to be: taking one's time, paying attention to instruction, accepting criticism, appropriate attitude toward the subject. When looking at modern values, I don't see a lot of overlap of those factors that contribute to good shooting (and it must be said, they contribute to a great many other things), and the modern mindset.

    Very good. I can't wait for the next segments. There is so much good advice in this video. The basics, that is where it all begins. As the great Vince Lombardi said...the game is all about blocking and tackling. Nothing else matters until you master those two things. What i like about all your videos is you give the straight scoop and tell it like it is. There are no miracle $400 gadgets to buy, no super expensive solvents, no $3800 dollar barrel. Re-watching just because. :) You recommend starting off at 50 yards with pistols and rifles. Do you zero your handguns at 50 yards, or the typical 25 yards? Are there any advantages and/or disadvantages (if these are the right terms to use) to particular zero distances? Or, is zeroing not much of a factor (proper sighting and technique more important)?

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  Před 9 lety +3

      Nomen Nescio I believe that I suggested 50 feet as a good starting point for a handgunner, as it builds confidence, short ranges are easier to find, and the smaller targets are cheaper. However, as long as the appropriately scaled target is used, it makes no practical difference. Most handgun calibers using standard grade ammo have relatively little arc in their trajectory out to 25 yards, and only an additional 4-6 inches low from 25 to 50 yards, or about the amount of the lower half of the bull. Translated, that means that a center bull hold at 50 yards will result in a dead hit with most standard calibers, when the gun is sighted for a 6 O'clock hold at 25 yards. But competitive shooters that shoot at known ranges typically sight their guns for the specific distance, as it's more precise to use the 6 O'clock hold with the lower tangent edge of the bull. Because there is little difference in drop out to 25 yards, I always sight my handguns at 25 yards, unless I am competing at the longer distance. With combat guns, the difference in drop from 25 to 50 yards means absolutely nothing.

I appreciate all the love of AR platforms, but a good bolt action rifle is always a great way to go! Winchester, CZ, Steyr, Remington, etc., etc., etc. Rediscover the bolt action!

    It makes sense to call it site radius. Follow me here on the trigonometry. There's an angle between the bore axis and the site line. From our old Unit Circle stuff (Derived from the Pythagorean Theorem), the muzzle/front sight is the center of the circle. I use this principle to adjust sites. I like to sight in my handguns to 25 yards. Let's say I'm punching 3 inches to the right for the center (bullseye) of my group.
    Sine of Angle = Opposite Side / Hypotenuse Side

    This is the kind of shooting that drives me. I never shot steel. Never pointed a gun at a man shaped target. Never shot a watermelon to watch it exploded. I eat the watermelon save the seed for targets. At 10 yards shoot seeds till fly shows up on rind. Shoot fly. Always looking for a smaller group. Lots of good shooters don't shoot from a bench. But to me a 3/8 outside to outside group at a 100 yards is a beautiful thing. Offhand it depends on how big is the side of the barn an how fer away.

    May kindly correct a philosophical error. God gave every person on the planet the right to keep and bear arms, not all governments respect this right. So, it is not true that only Americans have the right to keep and bear arms.

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  Před 5 lety

      God indeed gives us certain inalienable rights, but in practice, only Americans are guaranteed that right by virtue of written authority granted by Constitutional Amendment. We don't live philosophical existences, which are unfortunately controlled by the governments that we live in. I was addressing the matter of real existence in a real world, so it is indeed "true". On a purely philosophical level, and being a man of faith, God intended us to love one another He loves us; to put down our swords. Life, Liberty, and the persuit of happiness may include guns and golf clubs to that end, but God revealed himself in Christ, who exemplified by his life and testimony on the Cross that the ONLY thing that matters is that we seek eternal life in his Kingdom. "Mathew 10:37". No possession in this life will get us to heaven, but in fact may make it more difficult.

    • @edwaggonersr.7446
      @edwaggonersr.7446 Před 5 lety +1

      @@GunBlue490 On this we will just have to agree to disagree. That governments don't respect rights does not in anyway take away what God has granted. Every man has a philosophy of life, mine is formed upon Catholic tradition and Holy Scripture. Attention to daily obligations matters too, this is how we "work out our salvation in fear and trembling". Cigars and beer are necessary for a proper discussion of these important matters.
