  • List of building materials for the wooden dummy blacksilk style
For the main corpus I used a garden pole 9cm x 9 cm of 2m height. That would be approximately 3.6 inches x 3.6 inches and 6,5 feet high. It cost me about 8 Euro.
For the two shoulders and the leg I used a square garden pole of the same height with a square measure of 7cm x 7 cm (2,8 inches x 2,8 inches). Also 8 Euro.
Both are standard sizes to be found in every hardware store. They are already coated to withstand outdoor conditions.
I used a zinc coated steel stand to hold the main corpus. That was the most expensive single item. It cost me 49 Euros.
The upper shoulder was measured to match my own shoulder width and cut accordingly. The arms of the dummy where cot to match the length of my forearm. The upper arm pair which I mounted on the upper shoulder has an inner distance of one fist width, the outer distance are two of my own fists. I have used only standard items from he hardware store. Nothing fancy at all.
In the fotos you will see that the groundplate of the stand has a hole in it. I used an 8 inch standard screw to fix the dummy in the ground of my garden. This fixates the dummy in place so that it withstands the training, but it can easily be unscrewed and so the dummy is removable.
    Enjoy and have fun.
Oh, and all it cost me was 119 Euro and an afternoon of manly work. Please go to a currency calculator if you want to know what that is in your local currency,
    Enjoy.

You can actually tell how well a person plays the dummy just by listening to the sound of the of it being played. Timing, strength and expression of power, control, transitions, etc., just by listening.
Your enthusiasm never stops and you are a great kung fu devotee! Keep up the good work and thanks for the vid!

PVC pipe of course I know of. PVC pipe and cement actually never occured to me. Thanks for the intel. And as for the garden dummy: I will make a better one as soon as I get around it. Unfortunately - like everybody else - I have a busy professional schedule and the project stretches itself. Already got the timber and all, but I do not seem to find the time to lay the foundation. Hopefully this summer I will find the time.
    Thanks for the info again.

pretty impressive. interesting, you and I are on the same wavelenght. I decided today to explain how to build a wooden dummy. This one is good for some things. The movement of the arms is extremely important as they train turning on and off of subtle but important exhibitions of energy. One example is the bong "dropping" to the tan.

The construction itself is astonishingly sturdy and takes a lot of punishment. I had to pimp the stand severl times until I was satisfied. The main problem is that the main body is square. That means if I do not pay attention I hit my knuckles exactly on the edge every time I practice hooks or diagonal attacks. So if I had to do it again i would use a round post. Apart from that the dummy performed well for several years without major wear and tear.

Looks good just a little bit of advice for your next one watch out with that metal strap you have on the leg and make the upper arms one about 2 inches higher than the other one apart from that looks a winner i would get mung bean bags and use electrial wide tape to attach the bags around near the metal bits and also make large mungbean canvas bag and tape it on the head part to make a head to punch im making one of these real soon enjoy thanks i may use springs for the arms

Thanks very much for the kind words. maybe i will color the next one, bute the green-ish color is just the outdoor coating that went along right from the lumber yard. Since it was only meant as an experimental design I did not bother with extra painting.
i must however say that now the dummy has already seen three years of abuse, and it did hold it`s own.

Thanks for dropping by. Your advice is very much appreciated. And yes, the metal straps on the leg have been giving me grief to no end. That was definitely a major design flaw. As for the different hight in the arms - it never occured to me to do that, but the deigsn would probably allow for a refit rather easy.
However I have some timber now. Dried it in that garage for some months and as soon as spring weather permits I will start working on a much improved version. The bags would bean asset.

@DiegoINSOMNIA Thanks for the input. Believe me I haave put a lot of though into considerations such as you suggest. But I am doing this as a hobby. So I am on a budget both financially and with my time. Then we moved to the new house, and whatsnots. Never got around doing so. Today i wuld have a better solution then the metall parts alltogether. But that no longer matters. The timber for a nice round more classical dummy is drying in my garage right now. Will start in spring.

Thanks for dropping by. Telephone pole is a great idea. One word of caution however: if that thing is insect treated and laced with god alone knows what, then maybe you want to coat it anyway with some outdoor varnish or something. After all if you hit it hard every day then part of those chemicals are bound to seep in your skin. I discarded railroad cross-ties for that reason. Padding on the hit surfaces will also help in that case.

Sooner or later I will. This is a prototype. The main goal was to combine the properties of dirtcheap and sturdy. I will abuse this none to test and check the pros and cons, and I will take the nexct design from there. Round main body is definitely high on my list.

That is material from a heavy duty rubber mat. Those mats can be purchased in hardwarestroes and they are put under laundry machines and such to dampen the vibration. So this is very sturdy and tough rubber material. This way I get the necessary elasticity in the joints.

@r3bol I am not quite sure I understande the question, but the angels are more or less a result of the construction. I would have liked them more like in a classical Muk Chong, but that just was not doable.
However the dummy still is very usefull. You got to know what you do and why, then you can adopt to the unfamiuliar angels.
Also the dummy is a prototype. Onde day I will build a MARK II version that is hopefully more like the original.

That is a question I am curious about myslef. The dummy in this form is a prototype. So I am not sure myself how much punishment it will be able to take. Basically we had spare time at our hands and discovered the steel stand. Upon seeing the stadn i immideatly thought "dummy" and the rest was engineering on the fly. So I will put this dummy through the grinder to check out what it can do and what it cannot do, and where the structiral pros and cons lie.

The original stand was the single most expensive piece at 49 euros. The rest of the wood and the screws around 50 euros if I remember correctly. Took me about half a day including going shopping in the hardware store and assembling. Plus a couple of hours to tinker around on the drawing board.

  • @blacksilkblacksilk
    @blacksilkblacksilk  Před 14 lety

@ObaNarayanShivaji999 The idea was to get the sturdiest possible dummy for the lowest price using only standard pieces from a hardware store that are easy to come by. This is what my friend and I could conjure up in an afternoon. We could not figure out how to do the crossed arms with tha parts we had so that it wold still be sturdy enough. But hey it is a prototype.

Being a martial artist with a physics & engineering background I like to reverse engineer what I see in the many vids in utube land. So for many reasons I am looking forward to your "how to" vid on the dummy.

The central post is 10 cm by 10 cm by 2 meters. A standard fence post they had in stock. The arms are table legs that I chose by measure of hand and eye, and the shoulders are I believe 5 cm by 5 cm. Lengths of the shoulders again measured on site when assembling to fit my body frame. Sorry that`s the best i can remember.

about the edges i have worked with wood before so if you have a sander or extremely rough sand paper just sand down the edges with the sander. with the sandpaper first you should get the rough sandpaper and sand the sides you might hit then go over it again with smooth sand paper not too smooth or it wont work. or you could go the easy way out and buy a round post if you do it again. just a few tips hope it helps.

Unfortunately this dummy design is not optimal, but at the time I was still living in a rented flat, and the landlady would not let me have another setup. It lastest about three and a half years and was replaced by a better model after that time, but it would have still been sturdy enough to take further abuse after that time - and I always had it outdoors. In retrospect I must say, that the square posts and square shoulders where the biggest problem. You always had to watch out to prevent injury. Otherwise she was a fine little implement for a very low budget.
