I am not French but experienced racism in many countries while I have met good and nice people in France as well. I was in China ( will not name the place ) with my family including my parents ( one of my parents is black- I am bi-racial) and it was awful. Hence I would not generalise. Their order was stuffed up then their change was given them back all in coins and not notes. Quite frankly we were appalled and embarrassed for the restaurant owner and staff. The world has moved on and these poor customers sensed they were being mistreated so got up and left without eating the meal they waited ages for. France was the least favourite place and not what ppl crank it up to be. The thieving is ridiculous.

In the 1980s, my European history professor said she won’t speak English or speak French when she’s in Paris, but only speaks Spanish! Her area a specialty is pre-revolutionary France 🇫🇷! She speaks French! She knows the language! But French ppl are so awful, she speaks Spanish when she travels to that country! She said this in class in the 1980s.
Then in the 1990s, my sister and some friends from college traveled to Paris. By the time of the trip, all three were working in their professions and had more degree attainment past uni degrees. She said French ppl were rude, nasty and Paris itself was dirty and disappointing.
I won’t be spending any of MY finds as a traveler in Paris or the rest of the country either. They treat tourists and travelers despicably for many decades.

I'm old not doddery, but was rushing onto the train and tripped and fell over.
The "porter" just stood watching me struggle to get up and get my suitcase onto the train before it started off; not even _faux_ attempting to help or asking me if l was okay.
My pride was hurt more than my bones but l was really shocked at his cold stoical behaviour on what was supposed to be "First" class but for many reasons was worse than economy. No coffee service as promised etc etc I purchased the ticket as it gave me free lounge access at the Airport, but the lounge was closed.
Just one of those days? No, l think we are just as bad as the French. Possibly worse.

I also have had unpleasant experiences on Les Trains de Grand Vitesse and French trains. Years ago, an Italian train employee kindly reserved tables and compartments on the trains we took from Rome to Biarritz and back. We were politely shown to our reserved seats in Italy, but in France, they refused to let us sit in our reserved seats around a table, but let French citizens take them, even though the seat numbers were clearly written on our tickets. We didn’t argue, but on the return trip I had our family sit in our assigned seats and when the rude conductors tried to eject us, I asked to speak to their manager and pointed to the seat numbers on out tickets.
Nice is not nice. Our motel was filthy. They didn’t change the towels or sheets in a 3* hotel and refused to clean the room. Also, while I was waiting for my husband with my children on a sidewalk in Nice, I was propositioned by several men. I told these creeps that I was shocked they would hit on me with my kids next to me, and they said they wanted the kids, too. Now, I avoid Nice. I go to sweet little French towns, where the people are welcoming, moral, and friendly. Not all French people are rude. It is a beautiful country, and I will continue to go there, but I will seek out family run restaurants, boulangeries,…and I will ask to speak to the proprietors when an employee is not acting professionally.
In future, try not to look American. Many French people don’t like Americans. Leave your baseball cap at home and don’t wear T shirts and sweatshirts with American cities or places on them. Looking American will trigger them.

I thought it was just against us Americans, but I guess not. They really are the worst. I haven't been to Paris, but just to two ports in France- Nice and Honfleur. A million years ago, I had taken 7 years of French, and did well enough in it in high school, I passed out of four levels of college French. All I ever wanted to do was order a croissant in a French bakery in French, and I tried to in Honfleur. They acted like they could not understand me at all. I know what I said was grammatically correct, and my accent was not terrible. They were just a-holes. Fast forward 15 years, and we stopped in Nice for a day on another cruise, and my family of 6 (including 2 elderly parents) got screamed at by a restauranteur for not knowing he was saving his entire outdoor section for a tour group coming. We just wanted lunch. He yelled at us in French, and my brain froze up, but I did understand what he was saying, just slowly. It had at that point been 25 yrs since high school French, but I was able to translate to my family and get them moved. What was the point of that? You are in a tourist town, while ships are in port, at lunch time, with plenty of tables empty and a willing group of customers, and you tell us to F off... They have a reputation for a reason.
