I calculated the 9 move check mate for the first one. Took me about 40 minutes. Have to continue tomorrow. Too tired now.
40 minutes wow the persistence
lol I forgot the king could take the e5 knight so I thought it was m3
@@Coldvq-cg8lh Ah, I see. Then you should work more on visualization.
It's all fun and good, until a random 12 year old says Mate in 23 and actually mates you in 23.
From the starting position.
I read a chess book about opening attacks from the library once (pre-internet) They featured a classic game from about 100 yrs ago where mate in 8 was announced. The king was walked across the board and castle was even used for one of the checks. It was the first time I saw how beautiful chess came be.
For me it was too difficult. Didn't get any, but I had the right idea on most of them. I can't visualize that many moves ahead in complicated positions like these. The shorter mates in 2 or 3 at the end of each puzzle were doable for me. I'm about a 1500 on a good day, and 73 YO. Maybe this wasn't a good day though.....I think my limit is about mate in 6, and I'm sure I miss lots of those in my games.
I don’t think I could ever be sure enough to announce a “mate in X” in a game. Being wrong would be too mortifyingly embarrassing haha.
Great fun though, I had a couple right, I was on the right lines with the calculations, but would often miss a potential move 4 or 5 moves in, where it would then deviate from my thinking. I find keeping track of where pieces will be in my mind so difficult.
This was the same thing that happened to me. The first couple moves are easy but then the brain just gets scrambled trying to remember everything haha
let us all appreciate how good has he become now than before..
Nice video. I also found an alternate finish to the 4th puzzle. You can play Nxh2 instead of Ne4, before then following up with Nfg4 and Be3 also giving mate in 7.
This video was an amazing way to discover new ways to checkmate. So much knowledge in one video this was something special. I really loved this sort of content Nelson, I would very much like more videos like this to come in the future!
I immediately saw the path + first move for every one but when i was about 5 moves in calculating i found mates, but missed some resources that the opponent had. This video has helped me see the weaknesses in my chess, I really hope to see more like this one!
It's very good, interesting and educative Nelsi. Please make more similar ones and help us to improve our game. It's very good to check ourselves our ability to think of more than one move at a time. Thanks.
With some time analyzing the position, I solved all 6
and the help of stockfish
@@userac-xpg🤣
17:58 If you change up the move order, this is a valid gambit response for white to the Frankenstein-Dracula Variation. If 4… Nxc3, then white is playing a reversed Stafford Gambit up a tempo.
As for the puzzles I missed 1 and 6, got the last two moves wrong on 2 and 4 (positions got fuzzy in my head), and nailed 3 and 5.
This was awesome! Hope you do more of this series. Also, hope Kristin will come back for a game!
nelson lopez vs connor mcgregor when
Great video! It was difficult for myself to see the checkmates but I really enjoyed watching the explanations.
I got 4 correct by randomly choosing the next to largest number on each one, but I did find the same mate in 6 that almost worked for the last puzzle.
11:42 alternative is Bxb5, but same pattern ensues, mate in just 8 because N at d6 blocks the king.
Bro, you have a talent teaching chess! My playing has improved so much thanks to you!
At 7:36 I found a forced mate in 6 instead of 10 after fxe6 if bxe6 or Rxe6 it's in 3 and if Kg6 it's in 5 more moves after Bc2
that second one would take me at least 10 minutes to figure out and this alekhine guy just walked around 20 boards and found it, huge respect
Last one was hard. Great video!!
After a quick calculation, I got the 3rd 9 move mate up until the 8th move but didn't find the knight move. It was quite intuitive most of the time. I missed calculated the 4th one with all the knight moves. I had all the right ideas for the 5th one but couldn't string it together. And finally, I also made the mistake to hunt the king with the minor pieces on the 6th one. Fun puzzles.
I was just wondering, wouldn’t the second one be a mate in 2 if pawn takes e6 because no matter if the bishop or rook takes back, which is forced, the queen could go onto h5 because the knight is pinned?
18:22 i think its M6, Bf7+ Ke7 Nd5+ Kd6 Nc4+ Kc6 Nb4+ Kb5 Na3+ Kxb4 c3#
Kxb4 is not forced. And even if black takes the knight, its not mate. Black king can go a5
Not used to think beyond 4,5 moves.
Thanks
This video was awesome. I love calculation exercises like this
Even picking two different options, I only got two right.
15:15 i saw the pawn sacrifice and checkmate by the knight, but I failed to calculate that he doesn't have to take with knight or a pawn, he can also take by the king, but this thought didn't even cross my mind while calculating
I only spent a few minutes on each of them, but I solved the fourth and fifth ones on my first try. I found the same line you did for the sixth one, and got the first few moves of the other 3 correct.
The second last one can be done in five moves maximum if h7 is taken with B+
In the first one, after king g3, isnt it mate in 2 if you castle?

9:03 also could be to move the rook on f4 to g4, then the rook on g6 to g5. Checkmate!
No. Not only can black stop checkmate with his free move. He doesn't even need to do anything to accomplish that. The pawn on h6 already covers g5.
This was fun! I got some of them purely on instinct (like the mate in 8 on one of them)
I could give more effort in calculating it out, but I guess those muscles aren't as developed yet, still get unsure of how to proceed etc.
Another commenter said they would enjoy the shorter checkmates but with more interaction and responses from the opponent, i like that idea
It is good to do hard stuff like this to really stretch those muscles though and see what you can do!
First one could have been mate in 7 rather than 9. The last 4 moves where it’s paused, instead of moving pawn h3, white could move king f2. Black king then couldn’t move. Then pawn h3 is checkmate.
g6 or Qxg5 both stop that immediate mate
I fully calculated one of them, made a mistake in the first after the first 6 moves, and had the right idea in a few others but didn't see a critical move to make it work. Fun challenge, guessed 4/6 with 3 of them actual guesses.
I got 5 out of 6. I think it was nice seeing the games. I would like to see you go much slower next time.
I got 4 correct.
The second one I did see the King returning to g6 after Rf5+, but I kinda disregarded it as "doesn't matter" for some reason.
The third one I was gonna say 7, and while you said "the correct solution", I noticed my mistake, paused and calculated further for the correct 9.
The fourth one I gave the right move-count, but calculated incorrectly. I said Nxh2+ instead of Ne5+ on move 5.
The last one I got confused in the line Ke7 Qf7+, because I kinda saw too many options. I had no idea what to do and didn't even guess a number...
Can you please do adventure series more often please

Awesome puzzles xD
Nah, I got rekt
I have got 3/4 so far but on the 4th you can
also do
5 ... Nxh2+
6 Kf2 Nfg4+
7 Kg1 Be3 mate
I found many of the lines, but only because I knew there was a forced mate :/
during a game I may have considered those Queen sacrifices, but probably would have dismissed them
Loved the video idea, but it was too fast and too difficult. I'd love to start with some mates in 3-6 maximum and see you explore also other reactions from the opponent.
I got the first few moves right, but then started miscalculating. And with that I guessed 1 out of 6 amounts of moves, but not the sequence itself (not fully, that is).
I got 4/6 mostly by just guessing which seemed the most plausible after finding the first couple moves
First one was mate in two after bishop takes f7 pawn king e7 you can play knight to d5
16:49 what about queen h6 ? black can't stop bishop xh7, kh8 then bishop g6+ discovered check then kg8 only move and then the easy mate in 2 with qh7+ and ...
nvm if after qh6 black plays qe7 or rook e7 that defend it...
nvm after the discovered check bishop g6+ it would be mate in 1 on h8
because if Qh6 black has f5 then if Bxf5 he has Re6 attacking the queen
I've spent around 10 minutes calculating only first position. This was worth it though.
1. Bxf7+ Ke7 2. Bg5+ Kd6 3. Nb5+ Kxe5 4. f4+ Kf5 5. Nd4+ Kg4 6. h3+ Kg3 7. Ne2+ Kxg2 8. Bd5+ Ne4 9. Bxe4#
I solved 3 of 6. And I am glad for this because it was very difficult for me to calculate without confusing 😅
Hi Nelson. I really like your videos. It helps to improve my chess a lot. I really appreciate for that.
I couldn’t get all 6s right. But I did 2 of them correct. I am not sure about 5th position though. Correct answer was 8 but I got it in 5 moves. I probably missed something. Correct me if I’m wrong please. I started my move with Q H6 even though it wasn’t check. I wasn’t sure if I can do that. If Q H6 is acceptable black is check mated in 5 moves. If you could please let me know what I did wrong here? I am anxious to know .
I got the 5th one, but I can't count. Found the sequence, counted 6... I only have 5 fingers on my good hand!
Video style is good. I would say just mix in stuff like this periodically. I like variance in the types of videos.
This is obviously a skill WAAAAY beyond my ability. I still struggle to see mate in 3 or even 2. I have no idea how anyone can see beyond those couple of moves with such clarity. I have been trying like hell to hone this skill, but I still can't see them.
I solved number 2: mate in 10, this morning. Took me about an hour. You don't gave all the side-lines. You should! Funny enough, the only little detail I missed was that Black can play 1... g6. I thought 1 ... Nxg5 was the only legal move.
This is not the first time that I calculate a long line, but miss something trivial in the first few moves. In this case it's just mate the next move, but in my own games, I have lost several times after calculating a long line (well, not 10 moves, but 7 or 8 moves) correctly except for a small trivial detail - not at the end of the variations as you would think, but in the beginning.
Well that was a good reminder of why my ELO is only 1000. Nice vid!
I got 4/6 with the simple strategy of picking the second largest option.
I got number 4 and 5, but I only actually SOLVED number 5
Jokes on you, I got all of them wrong which is even rarer at 0.024% chance of happening even when guessing randomly. Checkmate
the very first example is technically mate in 4 -- they can block the first check with the bishop. can't they?
double check, king must move
Hey Buddy Nelson!👋🏻
Long Time No See!✌🏻
5th position 5 moves!. Qh6! Or les
Great video. I guessed wrong every time...Lol
I've seen the 5. and tipped one other correctly. I sould also say that I loved this content...
The game of presentation (where you said "Exemple: I say it's checkmate in 3") is wrong as the knight and the bishop could block, making it checkmate in 5.
Let's go now with the guesses!
1st one: Mate in 5 moves.
Got Wrong.
Bonus Question: h3+ Kg3 Nf5+ Kxg2 Bd5 (... 0-0-0)...?
I don't have it.
Oh. Wrong knight move.
2nd one: Mate in 10 moves.
Got it!
Bonus Question: g3 Nf6 Rh3#
Got it!
3rd position: Random guess: 9 moves.
Bruh.
Bonus Question: Kd7 ...
I don't see checkmate in 3, I only see checkmate in 2.
Oh, now I see why "3".
Final answer: Bd5 Qxd4 Ra5+ Kg6...
That's not mate in 3.
Oh. I was so close on one of my first thoughs.
4th position: 7 moves.
Got it!
And I gave up the bonuses questions.
5th position: 6 moves.
Wrong.
Last position: 8 moves.
Got it!
Haha, my only correct solution was in the beginning: I won't beable to guess only once correct. Really ool puzzles!
Am I tripping? Game #2 I see mate in 3. e6 take then Qh5. Black blocks g6.. Qg6 mate. Unless I missed something?
3/6
Not gonna lie-6 for6! Yup, failed them all miserably.
I could find any mate in all these 😂😂😂 poor me
5/6!!!
Failed on all of them but still think this is a cool video idea 👍
Thanks Nelson. Super fun video. Really liked it a lot
I love this kind of content. But it sure makes me realize how inept I am.
Imagine at the start of the game you say mate in infinite
Unless you're playing chess on an infinite board. That would make no sense.
But on an infinite board, you can announce infinite mate numbers in the form of infinite ordinals.
Kinda nerdy stuff but there are videos on this. Idk what to search up though. Maybe "mate in omega".
I got 3, legit got one, guessed the rest lol
Nah man, I definitely did not get that.
1:36 Imagine Be6
I got two correct but only by guessing
Well at least I got one!
i got the 2nd to 4th correct, I also guessed 6 in the last one

8:53 I think there is another checkmate in 2: Instead of g3 and Rh4++, white can play Rg3 with the double-threat Bd1++ or Bg6++. If Black plays the pawn to g5, then Rh3++
You are correct, both g3 and Rg3 work
If you guess them all you are beast.
I guess 3/6 right didn’t know how tho 😅
0/5 !!! 😅
2/6
***fart noise***
I got a big 0. Way too deep for my chess calculations
10:36 why did white not take the rook
anyone who says they solved all of them is leaving out the 2nd half of the statement which is "with help from an engine"
So you think everyone is on your level😂...if you can't do that, don't think nobody can do that....these all moves are most forcing moves (almost every move is a check)...so if you can't those it's your problem....

@@PickleCODM-hw6cj true....could be less than that...
I have no idea how can you guys see a checkmate in more than 3 moves
he is the goat
No comments 40 seconds in?
First guy: It's not smothered mate in 3, it's mate in 2 with Kf8 lol
Mate in X means that mate would be delivered in X moves with the best defense from losing side. Kf8 isn't the best defense because it leads to a checkmate faster so it is mate in 3.
Edit: typo.
Kf1 is illegal lol lol
@@Amoebyyeah you understood the joke, thanks for explaining
I guessed correctly on the fourth. Missed the others
I always thought announcing mate (and check) was rude and potentially embarrassing.
It is potentially embarrassing....but if you are was corect, you are so proud!
I got one correct on a guess
Hell no!
