What a great complete video. I never stop being amazed by the generosity of artists who share their hard learned information and skill.
I really appreciate this tutorial. You were very thorough and provided an in depth perspective on this beautiful technique, I’ve been wanting to learn. Thank you.
🙂🤩 SUPER video! Thanks so much for taking the mystery out of shadow box settings!! I"M SO GLAD YOU'RE BACK TO MAKING VIDEOS! You're a great teacher!! 10 ⭐'s!
Thank you for sharing your lovely work. I'm studying jewelrymaking, lapidary, and silversmithing here in Santa Fe. It's pretty clear that it's an obsession, a miniature universe. Masterpiece work.
Hardwood sawdust is the best. I have fixed older jewelry with things like cardboard an kitty litter in them. Thanks for this. You do great work.
Such an excellent demonstration, I am looking forward to implement shadow bezels in my project. Thank you for sharing this.
This is a very attractive piece. Glad you talked about why you use the sawdust. Good rationale. My teachers, all of them, discourage the use of sawdust but you provide a compelling reason.
Thanks.
Can’t wait to attempt this, it’s so pretty, thanks for sharing.
Wow I definitely learned!!! I've not worked with shadow boxes yet so now I can. Your video just popped up I'm glad it did. I've been working with turquoise and silver since 2019. When I was in high school they offered a silver class, it took 30 years later for me to live in my happy place again. I wish I could share some of my work with you to get your input. I will be following you and sharing your videos with others. Thank you sooo much. 🫶
I’m happy to help others learn the craft. Feel free to shoot me pictures at my email zinksterling@gmail.com and if you have any questions I will gladly share any knowledge I have.
Thank you! I don’t silversmith but love watching and learning the process. It really makes me appreciate my jewelry even more and helps me pick pieces that I recognize as labors of love.
Hey, you taught this old silversmith of 45 years experience something new. Thanks. Subscribed.
I usually fast forward thru the repetitive steps. But i found it instructive and relaxing to watch the whole process. Your voice is very soothing and the piano in the background was perfect. Thank you! I learned a lot
Omgosh!! Fantastic job! Learned a lot, I'm so gonna try this!
Let me know how it turns out
I saw a shadowbox ring a couple of years ago, and wondered how it was made. Thank you for the step by step demonstration. I also stopped by your facebook page and admired the various finished items, and the stones, and another video. This is strictly a hobby for me. I have a lot to learn, having come to silver work late in life, and instruction like that which you provide will help. Thanks again. What was that silvery stuff you heated and then embedded the stone in to hold it?
This video makes me appreciate the art of the shadowbox jewelry. Thank you
I just stumbled onto your channel and really like what I see I, am now subscribed. Thank you for doing what you do.
Nice relaxed approach to your craft, I have been mucking around with silver for quite a long time
and it just gets more enjoyable, love your work !!
Thank you for the video! Great tutorial. I would love to see how you make an oval shaped shadow box piece! I cannot find any videos anywhere on that, and I have yet to figure out how to make any other shape except round. Thanks again!
i learned about salt and vinegar for pickle and the wood material behind the stone as a shock absorber. Also the lay out and design work was helpful.Gave me new ideas.THanks!!
Just stumbled across this video. Really nice. Subscribing now. Thanks so much, your work is beautiful.
Great job!! Beautiful setting. So much attention to detail!
Nice, clear tutorial. Thank you!!
Recently retired and want to start making stuff at home, came across your video and what a great insructual video. You got a new fan,,👍
Such good camera illustration. That bezel getting pushed in is so visible! I can see why this stone won't pop out! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🤯🤯🤯
Great video! Thanks!!! Not only did I learn a different method of doing this, but you gave me lots of ideas and some motivation to fire up the torch. I'm a fan now so keep the videos coming!
This video gave me some new ideas. Thank you
Absolutely beautiful work! Thank you for sharing!

Fabulous video. Thank you for sharing. I hope you show more of your work
Great tutorial! Thank you!
Wonderful video. So enjoyable to watch. I learnt a lot from it. Thank you. 😊
Absolutely wonderful video. Clear and precise. I have just built my own jewellers bench and starting to teach myself how to make jewelry. Am so excited. May I ask what type of polishing wheel you have?
Thanks again 😊
Nici
Awesome job. Your video is very informative and a pleasure to view.

Loved it! Thanks
Very very nice, never seen that technique before.😊
Wow what a totally fabulous video and its so strange because I have been thinking about trying to make this style of ring amybe youtube is reading my mine lol.
It was a GREAT video. I love it! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great video I learned a lot
I am just starting to follow my passion of jewelry making … great video by the way! Question I am using copper for the holistic properties along with turquoise for the Chakra was curious to know if you could do a video on shadow box for pendants and how to make and attach the bail and attaching shadow box to bracelet? Thank you
Really great video I learned alot of technique. I would be interested to see a profile of how that bezel wire looked inside the shadow box before soldering.. maybe I missed it (I will replay).
Your very talented !!!!!!!
I thought sawdust was a neat way to set a stone till i did a repair on some earings that were set that way. The sawdust had gotten wet at some time and it was all moldy. It would be worse on a ring with people washing their hands all the time. Never again have i set with sawdust ! Beautiful ring !
Yea I understand that. I have messed with other shock absorbing materials, but in my experience blood wood sawdust works the best and holds up the longest. I also really like Bakelite dust as well, but unless you get into making pipe stems it’s not something you will come in contact with often
This was a great tutorial! I am curious if you think it would be just as easy to mark your lines from center (for marking the width of thethe floral "petals") while the silver is flat and to also stamp in the indent for the lines as opposed to scribing them out in the putty (doing all this prior to doming). Thank you for taking the time to share this!
Awesome job
Beautiful!
That is such beautiful jewelry nephew
Thank you very much for this video. What brand red pen do you use? I haven't found one that stays on.
Awesome video and a most beautiful piece. Kindly elaborate how the space is filled between the backplate and the shadowbox or is it left void? If void, then dirt may accumulate right?
Fantastic!
very nice top info
Thank you for showing your beautiful technique and piece!
How did you get the punched out circles and lines on some of your finished pieces?
gracias ..muy bueno
Fantastic
Do you always polish after setting the stone? Some stones don't like the heat and would crack, right? And thanks for sharing, it's beautiful 😍
I do always polish after the setting. I can’t think of any stones that would crack from the heat of polishing. The only time I have ever cracked a stone in the polish was when the wheel grabbed the piece and threw it at the back of the cabinet lol. I’m glad you like the piece thank you.
Thank you💗
Great video. Thank you. From jeweler to another please use a wood ring clamp for filing the shank. Your poor fingers! Lol
Very nice
Great video! What type of hardwood sawdust do you use? It looks really fine. Should I just make my own?
That was bloodwood, I just use whichever hardwood shavings I have under my lathe at the time.
I enjoyed this tremendously. The ring is lovely. Would you share the type of polish you use?
It’s the Platinum polish that comes in 3 stages on Riograndes website.
❤
Love this. Could you tell me where you got your ring shank template? I tried to find but that tool doesn't come up. Thank you 🙏
It’s called a shank size and bracelet guide
Where did you get the ruler tool used to measure the ring size?
Can you please tell me how come the saw dust does not fall out and what happens when it gets wet
Also what polishing compound do you use. I did not understand in the video
Thank you so much for sharing
The stone sits on top of the sawdust and the bezel gets pushed against the stone holding the dust in place behind the stone. Using a hardwood sawdust or a synthetic material under the stone acts as a shock absorber in the event that the stone hits a hard surface it lowers the likelihood of the stone breaking. Hardwoods and synthetic materials do not expand very much when introduced to water so it doesn’t cause any issues long term. If you use a soft wood sawdust then it will expand when it gets wet and can cause the stone to become loose or in extreme instances can cause the stone to pop out. The polishing compound I use on silver I purchase from rio grande and is a 3 stage platinum polish, however there are dozens of options on the market and it really depends on preference.
Hi, i am interested on how you measure to drill holes on the silver? Thanks
tyty
Was wondering what the bezel setting tool you used is?
What is the measuring tool you used for the ring shank?
Can you tell me what a feather file is? And also what is the tool you used to measure your ring shank to size? Thanks for the video great piece!
A feather edge file is commonly used to sharpen Japanese saws. The thing I used to measure my ring shank is called a shank size & bracelet gauge. Thank you for your questions and if there is anything else I can help with let me know.
@@ZinkSterling I’ve never seen anything like that tool and wondered where you bought it from?
I am currently stationed in Okinawa Japan and I buy them from a local hardware store called makeman. If you search Feather edge file on google you can find them for sale. I will say that file isn’t necessary at all. It is just a file I happen to have access to
@@ZinkSterling thank you but I was asking about the wire gauge for your ring shank. Instead of referring to a chart
I’ve never seen a wire gauge that could calculate the size of a ring just wondered where you got that
Can you do a 6 lobe bali style bracelet tutorial. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you

@@ZinkSterling thanks for doing the video. Looks great. Good work
Are those dyed turquoise stones?
The green stone in this video is Black Ridge Variscite. The turquoise in the thumbnail is Kingman turquoise and is not dyed
Interested in that file you use for the groves @23:00
It is a feather file used to sharpen Japanese saw blades.
What stone did you use?
Black Ridge Variscite
Where do you purchase your gemstones?
I cut all my own stones. I buy rough from several suppliers, but most of my turquoise comes from Kingman Arizona and a dealer I have in Hubei China
How do you do you oval shadowbox
It’s very similar except instead of using a dapping block you use a dishing block made of wood.
You mention a vinegar-salt pickle. What is the composition?
I make it with 1/4 gallon of vinegar and 2 cups of salt heated in a crock pot
What the gage your working with.
I mostly work in 0.75-1mm think material
I always ask myself, why this type of jewelry is always lopsided?
45:13 ... Boooooo ...
