  • You win some and you lose some. With 3 more markets left, I'm hoping this will have earned its place as "the flop" of all markets in 2022! I also tried something new for this market - it didn't work but I think it was still worth testing out!

    Just a note on vase arrangements. As you know I sell bouquets or arrangements in vases at my market. My market is finished for the season were I live as its close to the ocean and it can get a bit too windy in September.
    I sold 38 vases at 13 markets. What I do is only buy vases that will have an emotional purchase and I only have a few at each market. I enlist help. If my brother or husband is in a thrift type shop and see a vase I would like, they purchase it for me, both look and price are factors of course. If they are not sure, they text me a photo first. I place a wrapped bouquet in the vase and have a price of both combined - usually $40. $20 for the bouquet and $20 for the "very nice and unusual" vase. They can buy the bouquet separately for the $20 at which point I just put another wrapped bouquet in the vase. For small, unique vases I usually have sweet peas in them as that adds to the emotional purchase, the sweet peas are not sold separately and the arrangements are usually $15, the odd really tiny vase arrangement is $10.
    Before I purchase a vase I ask myself two things. Can I make money on the vase and is it unique enough for someone to really want it. If the answer is yes to both, its bought.

      That’s really interesting. How frequently would you say people are buying a vase at each market? I feel like it’s a tough sell at my market. There was a guy who came to sell with some cool cutting boards and he couldn’t move them 🙁

    • @EvelynM-vlogs
      @EvelynM-vlogs Před rokem

      @@bareflowerfarm It averaged at three a market. It needs to be an emotional purchase, that's why cutting boards are a hard sell. They don't elicit an emotion. People buy because they love the vase, they are buying a bouquet for someone else and are unsure they have a vase, or they are buying a bouquet for themselves and they don't have a vase the right size. The vases have to be curated to trigger that "need to buy" appeal.

    I have just come to the conclusion that people just aren’t spending their money on flowers. I get the oohs and ash’s on how pretty they are can’t move them for 10.00. I am going back to veggies next year and will go the little bouquets in jars and fruit cans for 5 bucks if I have any flowers. It takes waaay too much of my time to bring half of them home. Uncle.

    • @bareflowerfarm
      @bareflowerfarm  Před rokem +4

      Ugh I know the feeling. There is definitely a subset of people who are willing and ARE spending their $ on flowers but it may not be at the market. This is why when people say, you are undercharging, what they may not realize is that yes, compared to a florist, I am. But I am not getting the same type of traffic who goes to a florist at a market. So my takeaway is that a farmers market may not be the best place to sell flowers that appropriately compensate us for our time and effort. Time to seek a more appropriate audience for next year!

      @maybelline888 Před rokem

      @@bareflowerfarm do you have any thoughts on where to find a appropriate audience? Im just starting out, and after doing some research, Ive found that I have a low-baller at some of my farmers markets, we're talking very large bouquet for $10-15/ea. That's not something I really want to compete with, so I need to find a more appropriate audience as well. just dont know where to look.

    I think this was just a hard year. I had beautiful flower bouquets this year, donation bases!! And still sold only a few at our stand. I stopped making them and jus give some to neighbors....hopefully next year will be better.

    I wonder if people don't want to carry around a breakable item at the farmers market. Maybe if there is a way to have it packed up safely in a cute paper bag they would be more interested? I might try having prepacked vases on hand and then have a display of what's in the bag so it's fast and easy.

    • @bareflowerfarm

      It’s a good point! I also think mason jars as a whole are just more desirable as vases too!

  • @itsbloomingflowers

    Having a lost profit totally sucks. That’s why I am in a situation I will dry as much as I can and also just depend on doing the bouquets with whatever I have going on on the farm otherwise won’t unless I have a big order.

    • @bareflowerfarm
      @bareflowerfarm  Před rokem

      Totally and I came to the same conclusion yday. I would dry all the bouquets not sold instead of selling them cheaply. Someone came to pick up 2 bouquets yday so I’ll be trying the last 3 today 😃

    New subscriber here and I’m really enjoying your channel! Thank you for sharing so much invaluable information! I’m contemplating starting my own farmers market business but down here in Florida we only have markets Oct-Apr and I’m still not quite sure the clientele where I’m at can support a venture like this. I’m curious how you found your local grower? I am not in the position to be able to grow my own flowers but my brother works in wholesale flowers, however I don’t know yet if the numbers would make sense. Another question regarding your soaps and candles, do you make all of those as well? I haven’t found it yet but have you or would you be interested in doing a video where you talk about your soaps and candles in addition to your blooms? Thank you so much for sharing your videos!

    • @bareflowerfarm
      @bareflowerfarm  Před rokem +1

      Hey there! I always encourage people to take the leap and sell at a market if they can. I personally believe that you can always sell flowers anywhere -- it just depends on what you're selling and the pricepoint! If you have a florist in your town or a supermarket that carries market bouquets, then you've got customers! My local grower actually found ME from youtube and reached out. However, I found the local tulip farmer on google by searching for "flower farms" on google maps and contacting them. You can also try rootedfarmers.com which connects growers with farmers. Note however that some markets want locally grown flowers so even if you could go through a wholesaler, the market may not allow it (or you may honestly piss off some local vendors who can tell right away when they compete against imported flowers).
      Regarding the soaps/candles, I used to make them but have outsourced the production and fulfillment. One of these days I will definitely make a video on that :)

      @@bareflowerfarm thank you SO much for your reply! I didn’t even think about that, that just because I could maybe go through my brother as a wholesaler, that that might not be allowed at market, or that it would be uncouth to do so! I certainly wouldn’t want to do anything frowned upon. I think for many reasons, ethical and logistical namely, sourcing locally is right for so many reasons. I have so much to learn and really appreciate you taking the time to shed more light on the subject, and for your very useful videos! Thank you! 🙏🏻

    Hi what do you use in the water when conditioning flowers ?

    • @bareflowerfarm
      @bareflowerfarm  Před rokem +1

      I put some floralife express universal 300 into the bucket. But for some things like zinnias, sunflowers that I hold for more than a few hours, I add a CVBN tablet. For sunflowers, I may also substitute the floralife express with some quick dip if the heads are bigger and appear to be floppy
