- The Opening chase scene from 1993's Striking Distance. Cops in their Chevy Caprices chase down a stolen Ford LTD Crown Victoria, in the movie it says its an 89 but this its in fact an 87, by 88 the LTDs got their front and rear ends facelifted until 91 which was the last year of the LTDs.
- Hry
It’s funny how car chases back in these movies with 200 hp v8s are way more exciting and action packed than modern ones with cars that have more than double the power and handling capability lol.
Actually 180 or 190.
Conversation moved them along.
@@LITTLE1994 its funny I couldnt help but notice a pattern when the redesigned crown vics and caprices were out when this movie was made you never see one in sight and then in 2000 when gone in 60 seconds came out I saw nothing but 1992 -97 crown vics but never any 1998 or newer ones.
@@renj6531 movie budget. Around 1990-95 you’ll see Caprices and Impalas getting trashed in movies because they’d be cheaper to get and easier to come by. A brand new Caprice or Crown Vic would’ve been a good $8000 or $10000 a car where the production company can get 10 or 20 old Caprices to trash for $10000
The closest a modern car chase came close to these one is Jack Reacher from 9 years ago.
I love the old 70s and 80s american sedans and wagons, while the chase is badass its always sad to see them get destroyed
Fr, cars back then actually had style to them
@@angelic_disappointment7889 yup
I am convinced, for the moment, that this is why it's so hard to find a Chrysler R Body, i.e. 1979-81 Plymouth Gran Fury. Those were unibodies, so it wasn't too hard to damage them beyond repair filming a movie.😮💨🤕😥
4:10 that remarkable wheel cap shot
They got seriously lucky with that one. Things are definitely out of control when parts of the car spontaneously decide to leave the scene.
i came here just for that! and also 2:20
Wheel caps were notorious in american movies from 1960 up to 1998... these days no more wheelcaps, its a bit of a tradition lost.
In reality, the way they were driving, every hubcap would've launched off of every car within 60 seconds 😁
1:07 OMG the police car just flipped cuz the car step on the gas
No car chase scene in an early 1990s action movie is complete without these cars!!!
V8’s and rear wheel drive never disappoints ❤
Being from Pittsburgh it kills to me to see all the different shots driving through town and how they add them all up to be one continuous shot.
Ain't it the truth? Second Avenue to the South side in no time....never happens.
It’s cool to see how they film and especially so of your hometown. The director of striking distance, Rowdy_Herrington, is grim Pittsburgh.
The car is going down Strawberry Way and the next view is of the car on 5th Ave... three blocks away. An earlier scene shows the car driving East on Blvd of the Allies, then south on Grant Street , again about four blocks away...
In Aussie movie Stone from 1974 they show a precession of motorcycles going over a bridge on a major freeway and in one shot they're going the opposite way!!
Went from Baum Blvd and Herron Ave to The middle of downtown in one shot
In Spenser Confidential, they show a Corvette on 1A near the East Boston/Revere line and seconds later its in friggin Brighton!
Sure even on Spenser for Hire they showed Spenser being chased on the Esplanade by a garbage truck (pretty friggin impressive!) But the chases ends up at a park that is clearly not the Esplanade.
3:45, Chevy Caprice sustains major frame damage from the jump, then fixes itself a few seconds later once it finally catches up with the Ford LTD.
Well, big cars, body on frame or not, weren't designed for hefty jumps. Plus, the stunt people should've put ballast in the trunk like the General Lee to prevent them from nose diving.
HESOYAM
لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله
I also like how the LTD grew it's bumper back after T-boning an F150, after it went through the 10th street tunnel to come out onto Smithfield st bridge... Lol...
and to finish it all, end up 8 miles north of town in Etna!
This Ford LTD 89 is stolen, Chevy Impala police car after crashed with Ford LTD crashed with Chevy square body in fire
4:09 I love how that hubcap just decides to leave the chase in style.
Glad you noticed it.
There's a reason why the Crown Victoria lasted longer than the Caprice in the force. Both legends. Hated seeing them wreck, though. I actually have one of those old school 1st-gen Vics, though it's the facelift '89 LX. That one ex-cop (or perhaps regular with cop speedo swapped, since there's no spotlight) Crown Victoria single handedly whopped those '80s Caprices down like the Bluesmoble, though it too unfortunately went down eventually. Ford Tough. I miss when police cars were police cars, and being body on frame with big V8s.
Theres a video on CZcams of one of the first squad car dashcams recording a police pursuit I believe it was mid 80's. The cop which was in a boxy caprice/impala similar to these but couldn't keep up with an olds 98 of the same era in some places you can see the 98 pulling on the cop. I thought those Chevy's were good until I saw that video, thing couldn't punch through a wet tissue.
Sure but remember they're 100 caprices for every one vic the Caprice carried the 80s on it's back with taxis, police, and civilian models it ain't fancy it's a workhorse.
I've noticed box Crown Victorias are abit structurally sturdier than box Caprices. The roofs have much less tendency to bend in a hard front collision and the front ends resist bending up when landing after a jump more.
Crown Vic is BUILT FORD TOUGH
I was a deputy sheriff in the late 80's to mid 90's. The Caprice unmarked we had and the Caprices of the NCSHP would out run a Crown Vic in a heartbeat. (No pun intended.) My original patrol vehicle was an 87' Crown Vic. It was governed to 105mph. The same year Caprices were governed to 120mph. My next Crown Vic was a brand new 93' model. I can attest and would do so under oath, those Crown Vics we had in the sheriff department, to include mine, were governed to 147mph from the factory. I personally know this for a fact. I also know that the 5.0 LX Pursuit Mustangs with the 302 and the Caprices with the LT1 engines were governed to 154mph. This was in NC. Your mileage may vary. I don't recommend running at those speeds without a rollcage and the proper onboard safety equipment, but it came with the job sometimes. I grew up in a law enforcement family with the 440/375hp Mopars, the cough, cough, 396/350hp Chevys, the 427/425hp Chevys and the 390/325hp Ford Interceptors along with a few odd 428 powered Fords. I still wish I owned my 70' ex-NJSP Fury III. I loved that car, but life moves on. I almost cried watching the amount of Mopars wrecked in the Blues Brothers movie. Same with that stupid TV show Dukes of Hazard.
Watching movies like this growing up made me believe that old box body American sedans were high performance V8 drift machines that would explode in fender benders. 😅
If you put a little money into a 351w or a 350 SBC they can make 500hp+, even if you can't afford a stroker kit, aluminum heads, intake, cam, 4bbl, headers...some nitrous, carb+intake, headers will almost get you there for short bursts.
I love _Striking Distance_ even though it wasn’t one of Bruce Willis’ best films out of his filmography. But the action scenes like the car and boat chases and the final fight between Tom & Jimmy were the most enjoyable parts of the film, even Bruce Willis and Sarah Jessica Parker’s chemistry together was a memorable moment of the film too.
It's definitely one of the best
@@KingCeee I love the film too. I hope they'll release a Directors Cut with all it's deleted footage restored.
Me sees cop car upside down: "They broke my watch"
Blues Brothers. Classic
@@juniorzablosky9608 I remember that. Still hilarious.

How did the hub caps stay on that caprice. My grandmas always fell off pulling in the driveway
Duct Tape
did they not wear a seatbelt?
@@sk31370n he was talking about hubcaps
the ford is like Christine it keeps regenerating parts
Wendy Anderson LOL
That happens a lot in old action movies. They're using more than one car or forced to repair it during takes.
“Officers down, send an ambulance”
Bruh, send a fucking coroner them guys are cooked
Capt. Hardy should have requested fire department response as he reported a fire in the tunnel. Coroner isn't going to do squat until the fire is extinguished.
that's the Real 5.0 in that LTD. sounds good.
Same here but after noticing the 140mph speedo then would this LTD-CV could be an unmarked unit or an ex-cop car with a 351 instead, btw it does sound good and revs better than the Chevys.
Actually Police package had a 5.8L
Ive owned several of these cars and at 2:26 you can clearly see the 140 mph certified calibration spedo, the civies had an 85mph. That car was probably an undercover police package car. not all of em had the dog dish hubcaps. a lot of times supervisors have upgraded package cars with cloth seats etc.
@@renj6531 could you get the vinyl roof on the police package?
Sure you can I've seen police package lx models
It's interesting to see the differences in car-make during that time period. Like you've still got the boxy all metal cars but then you also see the start of how some cars are being made in that "aerodynamic" style.
America was transition from metal bricks to aerodynamic plastic
@@MN12warbird and it only gets worse after that
They used several different LTDs. The car lost its front bumper and regained it.
Yeah after ramming into a Ford F150 and completly ripping the pickup box off.
I did notice how the car magically gained a front bumper again
Nice continuity with that one assholes. Do the editors think we're stupid or something?
What do you expect?
It healed up completely right before the big jump at the end
Top notch acting from Bruce Willis, together with the Die Hard serie. I loved Die Hard With a Vengeance the most.
A fantastic old school car chase with real stunt drivers
I was on vacation in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago, and I recognize the landscape at 3:08. The hotel I was staying at was down there across the street from the Fort Pitt museum.
I actually own an LTD like that
I missed that type of body style of these iron giants and Bruce Willis did put them to its paces through his career especially the Caprices like the taxi he drove like a boss in DH3.
BTW i also got the car chase from The Rookie.
@@FLYBOY409 yes i think it is a very good car and is built like a tank
@@LTDCrownVicFanakaRoyalTsnumber I know, I'm gonna miss the Crown Vic Police Interceptors when i don't see them in action since 2011 was their last year but what's keeping them going is the fact that they're easy to repair in case of collisions and they got spare parts galore for them, my only complaint in some year models are those weird spark plugs that can easily break while removing them other than that their 4.6L V8 is battle tested to pursuit and catch criminals out there and they've proven themselves all this years.
I have one too, though it's the facelift kind.
The LTD driver side headlight magically re appears when it began to roll over!
Either the chase went on for hours or they're driving through teleporters becuase there moving around the city of Pittsburgh in lightning speed like there on the thunder bolt
They're on the Racer...
ba dum tisss....
Great chase scene. They didn't worry about things like continuity in those days!
There definitely is some Christine DNA in that Ford!
I miss those old LTD Crown Vics. They were tough as steel!!
Yes, they were, and this is coming from someone who has a 1989. Crown Vics at that time were beasts.
They were good all the way until Sept 15th 2011 when they closed St. Thomas.
Because they were actually made of steel. I know modern cars are much safer, but these were built to last! :3
They were really tough and tbh the 5.0 in them was better than the 5.7 that came in the caprices
So toughh, you could see the result of ramming a chevy caprice with just the bumper corner you could fold in doors like nothin and keep rolling....
Nice to see Pittsburgh in an action scene. Love that city.
I had a 87 crown vic and I was t-boned by a late 2010s f150 at 40 mph. And I walked away with no injuries, this is another reason why I trust old cars
I have three hash marks in the stripes across the drivers door (79 Marquis), one for each car that's hit me and been totalled. SO FAR.
I HAD an 86 Grand Marquis... it finally got taken out when I hit a motorhome on I95 and did a barrel roll through the center median and up the other side. Crawled out the window, not a scratch. When they rolled the car over again, all the doors still opened and closed even though there wasn't a straight body panel on that car anywhere and nothing but the rear window was intact.
Was a fantastic car.
Panther tanks
Used to have an '89. But I'm very sorry for what happened to yours.
@@kleetus92 Damn, what the hell did YOU do?!
Wow....pretty good stunt car work, considering no computer animation..
There isn’t anything difficult about it
Car stunts have been around waaay longer than bad cgi...
He even drives like a cop
What do them cops in the Caprices expect? He's driving a Crown Victoria!
At 3:45 he really taco's the frame of that Caprice. Puckers the whole fender.
So sad to see a nice ltd get destroyed
One of my favorite Chevy Caprice years.
DC322 me too love caprice
Everything about the looks of that is cool. It's got a square jaw, a toothy grille, dead eyes. That car meant business. I wish they still made them.
These were real cars that had character back then now everything looks the same.. love the square body GMs and Ford's
Same, despite the '90s one having more power.
@@srtme9846 The Caprice then made into a land yacht afterwards.
Can we all agree that Unmarked police cars with a Red or blue teardrop on the roof are the best kind?
I believe they made a mistake wiring and mounting that lightbar
The stunt in 1.40 was filmed Twice - once with the pickup truck and another time - according to B roll footage - with an estate car. I'm assuming the right side of the pickup truck hit the car and turned it and therefore the car couldn't carry on in a straight line. When we see the car from the front view that is when it hit the estate car which being lighter than a truck - did not turn the car as much. One of the Best car chases of the 1990s!
Estate car? (Or are you referring to a station wagon)? We had an '82 LTD Country Squire wagon; those were awesome!
@@joshuaecht Yes it was a station wagon with a kind of curved back end. Not like the straight edged station wagon in 'Vacation'.
I love this chase. Please can I get the full movie, what is its name?
(Chevy cop car bursts into flames)
Cop 1: "Like a rock."
Cop 2: "Shut up, Carl!"
I’ve always been a sucker for the Chevy Caprice or Impala police cruisers from the 80’s. To me they just had more character to them than the modern crown vics.
As a car guy, this was rather depressing to watch. So many old cars got destroyed in this. The most painful to watch were: The '76 Eldorado, the '86 Taurus wagon, and the one that hurt the most to watch was that nice '77 Coupe DeVille at 3:41
Those were hurtful to me too, as well as the Ford Ltd Crown Victoria & the Chevrolet Caprices. I want cars like those when I turn 16, so I have 2 years left before I'm able to get and drive one.
The '76 Eldorado would have been 14 years old at the time, so not really a classic yet, rather a somewhat old car they could get for cheap. It would be far worse had the movie been made now and smashed those cars. I swear, if they want to do a chase scene with a car that is more than 25 years old, the should just build a replica.
I hated seeing the Crown Vic and Caprices wreck.
I loved that blue 1985 Ford Crown Victoria !
Lots of fake TV stuff in here, but what's not fake is the responsive handling, controllable overseer, and reasonably decent braking. These two full size Ford, and Chevrolet cars put on a good show. No wonder they wound up in a lot of police depts.
Took all those Chevy's to catch one Ford. Both are iconic rear wheel drive V8s that will live on in spirit
the ford ltd crown vic is a ex cop car because above the transmission shift indicator says certified calibration so its a or was a cop car with a 351 W . Its a 86 or 87 because of the third brake light which was required by 1986 or newer vehicles .
Andy Sahs Don't forget about the 140+ mph speedometer.
@@FLYBOY409 Exactly.
But it is possible it can be the regular one with speedo swapped with the police version, as the car itself doesn't have a spotlight.
@@FLYBOY409 yep even as a 9 year old I was curious about that; we had an '82 LTD with an 85-mph speedo so I had a feeling it was a modified one even back then. The 351W Fords with the 2-VV carb could do 120 if lucky and clean (no lightbar).
@@joshuaecht With dual exhaust 180 i think .
wow driving down Bigelow Blvd Stoney's Bakery truck which went out of business brings back memories
Damn Frasier's dad wasn't fucking around when he was a cop !!!
My mother had a blue 1987 cv ltd back in 2002 that car was a beast
Awful seeing my favorite cars getting trashed. This was the early 1990s though, when they were everywhere, unlike now sadly.
most of them are a relic of the past, those cars are new washers and fridges by now because i couldnt even find a 2000 crown vic in the junk yard which is much newer.
@@renj6531 I'd caught a movie on television recently filmed in 2009 and set in the middle east somewhere and an early 80s Impala in good condition made an appearance.
I know right? The Crown Vic and Caprice are both gone into the winds of history...
Completely forgot about this movie. Fantastic car chase between a LTD and Caprices.
Cars nowadays can take the slighest bump and they're totalled. It's impossible to make a badass cat chase scene anymore. The plastic bumpers would break off from going over a curb.
1:38 I see Bumblebee LOL!
You sir, have eyes of steel!
The original Bumblebee? Yeah!
I feel bad for the cop after his car overturned in the tunnel, when he sees a truck approaching him at speed and we just know by his scream, that he will be killed in the resulting explosion.
It takes a whole herd of chevys to get one ford
My favorite car chase scene
I like how every new shot the Ford has all its hubcaps back on while simultaneously losing them
2:41 he just backed into that LTD s (single headlight) those are even more rare, I still see the quadheadlight crown vics from time to time though
Yeah, those single headlight Crown Vics from '82 and before weren't made in high numbers.
Great catch on that LTD-S. Wow, a lot of police car enthusiasts here--the '79-'81 LTD-Ss were rare. I think all '82s were all quads.
Check out the list I composed

3:25 that one cars streethawk Lightbar came off.
Kinda killed the shot, too. Looks to me as though they didn't anchor it correctly.
Aaaand this one will be added to my favorites for sure
Wow cars of this era were absolute tanks compared to the plastic toys we drive now 😮
These cars nowadays? If you Breathe on them ALL the airbags go off & the chase is over!!! Does This generation even know what Demolition Derby is?!?!?😎😎😆
There was plenty of plastic on them back then too.
seeing those cars bounce is hilarious. imagine seeing that on your way home from work 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Cracked up when I saw that in the movies. Still do now🤣
The police Chase reminds me of GTA North Yankton without snow
I was thinking, the cars went through all of that and not even one hubcap fell off? Until finally one did at 4:09.
I love how the police are literally shooting at each while shooting at the bad guy lol

I recognize this car chase on the end part
Pittsburgh PA, magnificent American city. great Hollywood action movie.
This is the real Bruce Willis I used to know
This is one of the best chases I've seen! I grew up when the last of these cars were still on the road.
I'll have to watch this movie now! :3
Love this movie!
Both cars are good cars.
America cars was build strong. And .with.nice .style the 80s cars.
Was great and 60 s 70s 80 s cars.
Was cars too bad it to find and getting rare the new cars are ok doesn't bet old cars no plastic bumper no weak.metal new cars.are.junk.
You realize they would go through multiple cars filming this stuff, right? IDK about this movie (some of those jumps didn't look too good for the suspension/frame) but Bullitt took 2 Chargers and 3 Mustangs.
Things like roof strength and side impact bars are way better than the cars of old. I do kinda agree with you on the bumpers though, technically modern cars still have metal bumpers, but they are hidden behind those awful plastic bits that break super easily. They need to bring back bumper standards, crumple zones are important at higher speeds, but at like 5-10 MPH, the goal should be minimal damage to the car.
Looks more 80s than 90s tbh
That's Chevy's side saddle pickup fuel tanks for you! Always waiting for an opportunity to blow up:)
You do know that when CBS or whatever bullshit news show did that test, they actually planted a charge on the vehicle so they could 'show it on tv'...? GM sued the shit out of them, and won. That was like 85 or 86 I think. It was shortly thereafter that I realized that I couldn't trust 'news' organizations.
Nice stunts in this one
You should check out 1994's SPEED and watch as Sandra Bullock's character puts that GM bus to its paces in order not to go below 50mph because there's a bomb on board and if she does then it'll explode plus that epic jump scene is amazingly done and i did saw the behind the scenes of and how they did it.
3:31 Escort probably an 85- 90 if I recall right In 85 didnt they make both (sealed beam early in the year and the composite headlamp shown here mid to late year)
1:09 that one had the wifi motor/transmission
I want a 1990 caprice in black. I had a 96 LT1 caprice in white. Bought it in 2007 with only 20,000 miles on it!
Rowdy Herrington will always be remembered for directing one great film. This isn't that film.
TWO films. "Jack's Back (1988)", initially a made-for-home video movie, was VERY Good with James Spader, Robert Picardo, and a HOTT Cynthia Gibb!🥸
Road House? Gladiator was good too, the boxing film not the Russell Crowe one.
We need more made here we have a beautiful city line.

This stunt answers the age old question, which is better, Chevy or Ford. And we got the answer. The Ford took out an entire fleet of chevys. Even before rolling over to die, it took along with it, the head honchos aka bruce Willis's Chevy
Both of the 1980 Ford LTD Crown Victoria and the 1977 Chevrolet Caprice that it could be used in the VGR Era.
(VGR Stands for Videogame Republic)

I saw this when it first came out and it still blows my mind how unbelievably spastic the cops are in this film. Aside from the fact that civilians have to dive out of the way so the cops don't mow them down, can any of these cops drive better than Stevie Wonder? How long does a police car last in that town? An afternoon? Shit, why did Bruce Willis even crash? Did he chase the other guy off the side of a cliff like Bugs Bunny or what? Kinda hard to give a crap about these characters when they act like reckless assholes.
LOL You've obviously never been to the steel city... they weren't driving like assholes, they were dodging the potholes!
That would be one boring movie otherwise.
that was fantastic
2:10 correct me if im wrong but arent those C/K and G van hubcaps on those Impalas. I thought the police dog dish caps were plane with no color?

That car at 0.04 is a early 80s Nissan pulsar nx
Now I know the Driver game inspiration
I still have the first 2 on PS1 and they still work even i have their soundtrack on my Ipod didn't like the third game but i regret a little trading in Parallel Line but i do also have San Francisco on my PS3. Basically GTA made them kinda obsolete but the first 2 are definitely timeless classics in my opinion.
I assume this is before Martin Crane got shot in the leg 😏
And send the Fire Department, while your at it 10-4?
What soundtrack?
0:37 there are 2 cops in that 1987-90 Caprice yet at 0:56 there are 2 cops in a 1983-85 Impala. All the other cars I only saw a driver
Nice eye, the '83-'85 Impala had a simpler front end than the Euro-lit '87-'90. (Interesting fact; the '86s had the Euro light but recessed, not flush like later ones).
