    I actually did that by mistake on my 1991 Landcruiser with the A440F transmission when I first got it, wanted to try coasting on a long slope, pushed the stick forward one notch too many ;-) It just stopped the engine, but the sudden deceleration before the engine shut down was a bit scary ;-) I quickly put it back into neutral and simply restarted the engine in neutral and put it in drive and continued on my merry way ;-)
    Now try putting it in Park instead and see what happens... If the driveshaft u-joint doesn't bust be prepared for some scary skidding! (broke the driveshaft u-joint on a van once doing exactly that, but that was my first time using an auto tranny and I was parking and quickly found out that "park" wasn't an actual brake like on a manual, hahaha)

From experience the frictions will just be glazed over and black with a nasty smell to them. If is really bad then the friction material just flakes off after it burns up and ends up in the pan.

    • @mysock351C
      @mysock351C Před 4 lety +20

      @@C.I... They have what are called clutch packs (and bands). A clutch pack is literally a stack of steel plates and paper-lined frictions. Usually something like 6 or 8 of them that act as a wet clutch. There are also bands (a large steel strip with paper friction material) that are used in some transmissions to lock a reaction drum. The planetary sets provide the various ratios of reduction as different clutches lock/release the various members of each planetary gear set (ring gear, spider/planet gear assembly, and sun gear). There are also one-way sprag clutches as well (like a freewheel on your bicycle) that are used for routing power through the gear train. If you toast one of these it can also cause a loss of one or more drive gears.

    There is (depending on the vehicle) a control module which manages shifting into the next gear. It will either be built into the ECU or it will be an independant module. Either way, it will detect and prevent a bad gearshift (from, say drive to park while moving or from drive to reverse) until the vehicle eventually stops.
    Also, there's a good chance that after slamming this one into reverse so much has trashed the fricton bands that engage the planetary gear sets in the gearbox. This would also explain the smell of burning clutch and why the vehicle needed insane amounts of throttle just to roll. They use a similar material to clutches so the smell from one being worn excessively would be extremely similar. They also wear down insanely fast if they are subjecct to excessive stress or bad shifting maneuvres. Say, using park as a brake or slamming into reversewhile moving forwards. Once they're worn out... they slip, and once they slip... you need more revs to get moving, and the vehicle will be a lot slower than it's intended to be. OR, you end up sat there revving the tits off it in drive and not moving at all.

    I was able to do it in a '92 Subaru SVX. I didn't know when I bought it that it needed premium fuel and I was putting regular in it. Eventually it got to the point that it would take a lllooonnnggg time to switch to 2nd gear (because of the knock sensor). So I would treat it as a manual and shift though the 1st-3rd gears until I got up to speed. It seemed to work better when I did that and I had no idea why what was wrong at the time. Over a while of doing this, I was shifting out of an intersection (30+mph), and I accidentally went from 3rd to "R" instead of "D".... ALL FOUR WHEELS LOCKED UP.... I swear I had whiplash for a week, lol!!!

    I did this by accident once long ago, driving an old 80's square body chevy. I was going 55-60mph when I went to shift it into neutral to coast down a hill. I missed it and accidentally put it in reverse.
    WHAM! Instantly stalled my V8 diesel engine, lost all power steering, power brakes, and I skidded to a stop in traffic. Thankfully I yanked it out of reverse and was able to coast onto the side of the road, where I cussed and punched the ceiling of the cab for a while. Then I cranked it to life.... and drove home without issue.
    That transmission never did give out on me. It survived for years after, until I rolled the truck into a ditch and totaled it. It was a Turbo 400, just for the record, powered by a 6.2l detroit diesel.
