    Very informative for beginners. I also went down the same path, getting each particular item one piece at a time. I slowly acquired first class stuff by staying on Ebay until a deal came up. Some of my equipment, I had to rebuild, but there again is another fun learning path. Good luck to the young people and hobbyist. Just keep trying. You will succeed. A very helpful and inspirational video. thanks

    Years ago (back in the mid 70's) I used to modify SSB CB radios to go above 40 channels. I would charge $20.00 per radio. When we moved from Georgia to Tennessee, I ended up selling all my test equipment including my linear amps and filters. I used a Fluke frequency counter, several power supplies (linear of course), a digital multi-meter and a single channel oscilloscope and a curve tracer for the oscilloscope. I was in the process of updating some of my equipment when we moved and I sold everything including my J. C. Penny's 6241 SSB CB radio that was highly modified. I reprogrammed the PLL chip to go above channel 40 and below channel 1. Had a tuning wand sticking out of the top just over the frequency oscillator so I could swing the oscillator up for above 40 and swing it down for channels below 1. Cheers.     great video ! just the other day I was reading a book with a good idea for a dummy load. Soldering several flashlight bulbs together, enough so they would barely illuminate with key-up power then go full bright with voice, the steady illumination would help to test modulation. Just thought I would share that. Its an affordable alternative.

    That SWR meter brings back memories. My dad and I built that exact meter from a kit purchased from a local electronics store during the original CB radio fad.

    Peter, don't forget the modulation meter and the 1/4 Watt neon bulb RF sniffer. The best CB service monitor I had was left over from my Motorola two way radio service station, a Lampkin 105-B. Nobody remembers them anymore.

    A while back Dr. Carlson's Lab, recommended you as a good channel to watch.... I have been watching .......
    I see that that the caps are polarized... Are the electrolytic caps ??? There are some mica caps also that are polarized.... Also what value and wattage is that resistor at the meter ???

    Really helpful video, would like to see a follow up repair or tune video using the new test bench. A question about old valve type signal generators, are they all roughly the same basic design and opperation principle? i have an old sphere unit but it doesn't seem to full function correctly and it would be nice to see it run again..

      Crusader 26CT1508 Hi Sean, thanks for your feed back. Many of my videos are already addressing how to use those test equipment even it is professional stuff it is always the same procedure. Valve signal generators work in deed basically the same way but there are differences in schematic. You need a basic understanding on electronics to fix those devices..

    Hi Peter iv been a Ham for many years now, and came across your channel its brilliant and I have learnt so much from your radio repairs, can I just ask, I have recently built your suggested output meter as I do like to try align radios, the meter works well and if I increase the audio I can set the meter to say 1/2 full scale but what I’m finding is that when I trim the rf or if transformers the movement on the meter is so tiny you can’t hardly see it move 👀.Is there any way to increase the meter sensitivity?..

    Hi Jan or Peter...good video for beginners, are you going to do a follow up for adjusting deviation and setting the adjusters inside the radio? squelch, etc..i have used an hf radio or a second cb on low power before as a signal generator on a dummy load....think you can maybe use an analouge meter on low AC for reciever voltage across speaker...from Fred g4vvq in England.

      Tom Smith Hi Fred, well using a "normal" AMM for AC is critical as those meters very often does not go really ahead 50HZ.

    Thanks for the great video for newbies. Can you please let me know why you used ( for antenna dummy load) 8 pcs of 470 Ohm resistors instead of ONE 50 Ohm resistor?
    Is that PL 259 connector used for that antenna dummy load?

      These little resistors are typically rated at 1/3w. So ten resistors could handle 3w. 100 resistors would handle 30w etc...
      Put 2w through a single 1/3w resistor - it would turn black, melt and go 'pop'!

    I ordered a micro amp meter and they sent me a mili amp meter by mistake , it was too late to ask for a exchange 5 months later when I finally opened the package .... Are the coils inside the meters the same ? I was thinking the circuit it's connected to is what determines the actual swing of the needle .... Can I use the meter I have??

    I have an MFJ-264 dummy load, but it only has an input and no output. Is there a way I can attenuate the signal so I can apply it to my scope without damaging anything?

      the 1:10 probe can handle already a lot of voltage.

    Thanks for this video. Now I can setup my mad scientist lab ....
    After watching this, I realized that I had everything except the output meter and the RF generator. The output meter is in the planning stages and the RF generator is on the way from "the" Bay. There's also a Frequency counter on the way from China. I'll be up and running soon!
    Can you describe how the connections between the radio/generator/wattmeter? Are both connected to the antenna connector through a BNC T connector, or do you disconnect/connect the devices based on which circuit you are testing?

      No never use a T connector at the RF connector of the radio John. Not only that you produce a mismatch to your swr but you will toast your generator if you transmit into it. You always have to connect and disconnect for TX or RX path. Hope that helps 73

      Hi Asle, yes that is the load resistor. As the audio amp is working into 8 Ohm you use a load resistor of 4-8ohm. The resistor should be able to handle 5-10 watt power. 73

    Hi Peter on the audio meter you appear to have what looks like a white resistor across the meter terminals, but its not on the schimatic, what is it? the meter you use for peaking the IF transformer, Fred

      +MonkeyMagic Elecifun Hi, thanks for feed-back! Well the diodes are not very special, you can use OA47 or AA119 or any other Germanium type.You only want to get the signal rectified so there is no special demand for the diodes. 73

    Well, I see this video is more than 2 years old. However, it still applies for many people. I have watched several of your videos that deal with no tx and no rx. In those vdeos you are always displaying and referencing a schematic diagram. My question is: where do you obtain these schematics? More importantly, where can a person on a budget obtain these diagrams?
    Do they come with the radio or do you subcribe to a monthly service (like SAMS photofacts)?

      Interesting. After searching, I see that some schematics are available and some are not. I thought that you were going to tell me that schematics are included with the purchase of a new radio (or a professional subscription).

    Hi Peter i have made one of those Audio Meters as your diagram, i plugged it onto a radio speaker socket, it muted the speaker but i thought i should get a reading on the meter when tuned to a station and volume turned up, the needle doesnt move at all, i am using 100 micro amp meter and 47k ohm resistor etc as you diagram...does it only work with a high constant tone?...or have i got it wrong..as far as i can see i have made it same as you schimatic....Fred in UK

      Tom Smith Hi Fred, the meter has to be connected in parallel either to the speaker or a dummy resistor instead. it is mad for audio frequency up to 3kHz or so. It will directly read the audio output of a radio. If it is muting the tone it will most probably short it out to ground. Please check again you circuit espacily your diodes. Are they in the right direction?? The circuit I use is exactly what you see on the schema. double check very carefully once again. good luck 73 Peter

      TRXBench Hi Peter, its ok if i take the load resistor off and plug it into a rado the needle hand does move ok, i guess there i not enough sound coming from radio to work it, with load resistor disconnected the volume on radio about half way up looks good, but i will try it later with a 1khz signal generator with the resistor connected, sure it will be ok, yes i have double checked the circuit it is all together right, thanks again from Fred.

      The resistor of 8Ohm represents the speaker load to the audio amp as you don't want to listen all the time to a annoying ton while you are aligning a radio...

      Hallo Bernd, diese alten Generatoren brauchen in der Regel eine volle Restauratiom, somit wäre ein HP oder ähnlich die bessere Wahl. Im Video war das nur als Beispiel gedacht, aber keine Empfehlung sich genau nach diesen Generator umzusehen..Das nur als ergänzende Information. 73

      "Von 100KHz bis300MHz. Der Generator kann intern moduliert werden 400Hz oder oder fremdmoduliert."
      Ich lass mich mal überraschen.

      +bigpimp347 well you have to start somewhere..., but you are right finally you need a counter at a point.

      +bigpimp347 Counters are cheap, especially second hand but a two channel oscilloscope and accurate generator can get you out of trouble. One you get close you can feed each and trigger on the generator and adjust the rig to slow the second trace movement, or just use the scope.
