Can’t tell you how much I appreciate these videos, Thoroughbred Diesel, thank you!
Thank you. That is why we make the videos.
Just got my first diesel truck a few days ago but been around them my whole life. Never even seen the fuel filter and probably never would have til I seen your video ! Thank you guys!
Changed my filter a 100 times and enjoyed and learned something as well. Good job.
Great to hear!
I was glad to see this was just as much of a pain for Wade as it is for me. Always kind of thought I was doing it the hard way. I always empty the bowl first before pulling the filter. I'm done using the stock Fleetguard filters. So many times the plastic lid nearly separated from the filament when pulling it out. And then one day it did. What a mess that was. Now I use the NAPA Gold. 7 micron and heavier construction. However now I'm interested in this Baldwin 5 micron filter. Think I'll try that next. That's why I like these videos and forms. Gets people talking and sharing.
UPDATE: Just received my Baldwin 5 micron. Haven't installed it yet but took a good look at it and really like the construction. Update: Used the Baldwin 5 micron PF7977 two times now and it's working great.
I've used the Baldwin PF7997 for years now. I also have the GDP cylinder head filter.
Spot on! That’s how I do my 5.9! I change mine every 5k and it’ll be black like his!
Good to know I'm not the only one rocking Cardio B while changing filters
Excellent tutorial! Thank you
Great info. Very thorough video. Much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much. Keeping my 5.9 humming.
Glad to help.
Thank you for your time posting these helpful videos.
You're welcome!
GREAT VIDEO: Thanks for the tip on the SNAPOA1 29 Metric socket. That will make it a lot easier next time and I will make sure to check the Bowl for sediment next time also. THANKS
Thank you for the awesome videos!
This video helped me save on a repair bill thank you for your kindness and willingness to teach
Glad it helped
I appreciate this info 🤘
Good review!👍🏼
Great video 👌. Mine started up then died again. Was doing it b4 the change, thought a new filter might help. I'll check the sender flow like you suggested! 👍 I hope I don't have a leak somewhere
excellent tutorial thankyou

Love your video. Very helpful. Showed me exactly what I needed to know and do. Thanks
So glad it helped you out!
Wouldnt mind seeing y’all make a more updated cummins injector install 5.9 or 6.7 or maybe a 7.3 injector install! Always great content from you guys
Excellent job, thanks
Our pleasure!
As a parts manager this pleases me to see a pleated filter being respected by a diligent technician
You Sir are not a tec You are a true mechanic. Thank you for information a valuable time
Thanks!
🤔🤔🤔
When filter is out and drain open spray it out with carb cleaner and you will be good to good .
Good instruction. I was going to crack one injector, so I'm glad I watched this. I always did the bleed on my 2002 5.9. I wonder if #1 diesel corrodes the filter housing more than #2.
I like how you hand tighten until its firm, and then put the tool on it. first time i did this in 2008 i had leaking at the filter cover because I didn't do that carefully. Thank you!
definitely drain the fuel bowl, sediment collects in there.
Best video I have seen of the proper, thorough procedure, no cutting corners or “good enough for a truck that isn’t mine” type stuff. Thanks for the videos and I’ll be making some purchases through your store. Would be great to see a proper Air bag/air helper installation video including onboard compressor such as the firestone kit
Thanks 👍 Noted.
Well Done Sir!
Thanks.
Very informative, I do half to point out the trying to keep fuel in there to not have air pocket, yet drain and clean seems hypocritical
Kinda he is right on the money like Mr Rogers !!!
Good job bro
Thank you so much 😀
You need to drain the filter housing ....
he does?
I use 1 -1/8 open end wrench! Just got to remember not to over tighten, it is plastic cap.
I believe most of the contaminants in the fuel system come from the filthy pump nozzle at the gas stations. Right before the tank fills and foam washes the dirt off the nozzle and into the tank I hand hold the nozzle a bit higher and make sure that doesn't happen!
Finnaly someone who's says no to cracking injector lines injection injuries are no joke I know a dude who used to run a steel press and the hydro line pin holed one day it got him two times through his glove he barely noticed 12 hours later after the ganggreen set in he got to say good bye to his dick beatin hand
Or 1 1/8 socket works fine
overheadcam32 hahaha. Thought the exact same thing.
exactly
Excellent video Wade👍🏽👍🏽 Where did you get your socket wrench and extension from???
Thank you! All Craftsman except a Snap On ratchet. The strap wrench I use in this is also Snap On.
this proffessional forgot the most important step.DRAIN the filter housing first,he even talks about the dirt in the bottom of the can,so when he pulled that filter without draining the can, where do you suppose some of that dirt might have gone, yup.right in the line to your CP3 pump.not great.
I thought that too
Exactly....I drain mine every time and let it sit open for a few mins to make sure the junks out of the bowl
@@moose5.9 so what did he just show us how to generate some work for yourself
Craftsman makes a 1 1/8" socket for the 5.9 cummins fuel filter cap 😆
I def. agree with draining the can first.. that said.. doesn't the fuel down the top of the spigot in cannister? Would mean much less chance for heavies to get in tank.. which I guess is redundant as were trying to filter in microns vs chunks lol.
Drain the can!
Your right to open drain first and spray housing down to get and sediment or dirt out first and bump starter a couple of times till it’s full and then your hood to go !!
Next video you should show how to do a brake fluid flush! Not sure what that black stuff was in the brake master cylinder but it was nasty!
I’ve recently found a fuel filter that filters down to 5 micron instead of the 7 the stock fleetguard does. It’s a Baldwin, part number PF7977. I switched to it with my last filter change. You can’t go wrong with better filtration. Even if it is only 2 microns, thats 2 microns smaller you’re cleaning your fuel
That's what I use is the Baldwin 5 micron now, always used the Fleetguard before on my 03 Dodge Cummins 5.9. In fact when I bought the truck new the Fleetguard fuel filters then was rated at 10 micron. Also when I replaced the o ring I always use a little dab of new grease around the threads and the o ring to help get a better easier on seal.
I don't understand why Thoroughbred Diesel would put a stock filter back in especially when that was one of the main causes of injector failures on a 24 valve common rail. I get mine at Cummins and I believe they go down to 2 micron. Stock filter was only good to 10 micron and I believe the Cummins recommendation for the common rail was 5 micron and Dodge said No 10 will do...
Brian Stanfield stock fleetguard filter is 7 micron. The Baldwin I bought is 5 micron. So it should meet whatever requirements at that point
He says to commit the number to memory but it's the wrong part number. 03-07 is FS19856 for the 7 micron. The FS19855 is the 10 micron filter for 00-02
Came here to say the same thing.
ALWAYS DRAIN RESEVOIR !
why?
@@mikesouth5315 it's a filter housing where the filter does its job, filtering out debris etc. You dont want to reintroduce the particulates back into your fuel line. I also like how he cycled on the pump to quickly check for proper function.
@@mikesouth5315 Water
Everybody has their own way of doing things. I drain the canister first completely. Then remove the filter and replace it with a 4 micron Baldwin filter put the lid on tighten it down cycle the ignition switch several times and it will fill the canister and the truck will start right up.
Baldwin's are 5 micron.
You don't need that expensive Snapon socket. I've used my Harbor Freight 1 1/8" impact socket on my 2005 Ram 5.9l Cummins for 17 years, works perfect every year. I change oil, filter, and fuel filter all every year.
AC Delco fuel filter is down to 4 microns and on Amazon for $18.50 or Advance for more.
I use Baldwin. They filter to 5 microns.
Id get rid of that housing all together but it has a heater to warm the fuel in the winter.
I have a 05 with about 220,xxx on it and I’ve never seen my filters that dirty dam
Love the video hate that you are advertising the higher micron filter.
Bump starter 2-3 times and good to go .
Wade what micron is that fleet guard filter because Baldwin is 5 mircron ?
That’s what I use a big crescent wrench .
turn the key on or bump the starter to refill the bowl? not clear there. otherwise, nice thorough vid thanks
Not seeing these on the website currently 🤔
1st thing I do is drain the filter completely. Not much Fuel will drain from the filter that way, Remove the filter replace with a 4 micron Baldwin. Close the valve Cycle in tank pump several times cranks right up never fails. Yes everyone's got their own way of doing things.
Glad I'm not the only one that struggles getting the cap to screw back on.. haha. Always a few swear words at that point....
Has anyone ever experienced the following issue after replacing their fuel filter:
When I replaced my filter this last time I noticed quite a bit of sediment in the bowl and we decided to clean it out. We drained the bowl and had to use some suction to get all the sediment (as our hands were too big to get into the bowl to the bottom). I think this caused a problem with it staying primed. When we replaced the filter and attempted to start the vehicle, as explained it this video, it started but only ran a couple of seconds and died. I did not hear the fuel pump engage when the key was turned on. We attempted a number of times, but couldn't get it started and didn't see any fuel entering the bowl when the key was turned on. A mechanic friend said to put ATF in the bowl and reinstall the filter. This worked in priming the truck and it started up. It has been running since then, but shortly afterwards it started doing something odd. When you started the truck and left it to idle, instead of idling at about 750 RPMs it would rev up to around 1,000 RPMs, then sometimes after a few minutes it would idle back down. When in gear it would return to the 750 and move according to the speed being traveled, but whenever you would put it in park it would again rev up to around 1,000 RPMs. I've asked, but no one seems to know why it is doing this. Any ideas would be helpful. Thank you in advance.
Big adjustable wrench works just fine and not high dollar Snap On .😊
Cheap adjustable with the handle cut down to about 4 in.
If you were worried about unfiltered fuel wouldn't you drain the filter sump before pulling the filter? Does the minimal chance of contamination make that point moot?
Save your money and just delete it and add an AirDog or Fass fuel pump. Best money you will ever spend on your truck!
I find it best to use the paper towel or a hand vac & get all the fuel and crap that’s in the canister out!
Good tip, thanks!
6:30
going to leave dirty fuel in the canister. dont do it. just drain in with the valve and then make sure the canister is clean.. then just cycle the key a few times to fill it up.
another great video. is there another fuel filter on the 05 Cummins 5.9 that should be changed or is the only one for this year? ty
This is the only fuel filter on the 03-07 trucks. That is a good question though. Certain years of the 6.7’s had two filters.
Any 2003 to 2007 fuel pump will run continuously if it has the latest SW.
What's the filter microen spec of filter???
Love the information. Thank YOU. Question I HAVE THE 2005 3500 AND THE IDLE IS SLOW TO RETURN TO IDLE AFTER LETING OFF THE PEDDLE. ANY IDEAS????
Same with us did u get it resolved

Injector’s
Injectors
A Baldwin PF7977 is a direct drop in and provides 2 microns more filtration. I always lube the o-ring with diesel fuel.
That is Baldwin PF7777.... no #9
Great advice about bleeding good way to loose a hand. However it should be a FS19856 7micron not the FS1985 10micron they used in 00-02.
Joe Barrington how do you lose a hand to bleeding the lines?
Is it from the pressure or
@@americummins4048 it's called fluid injection injury. These things run at crazy high pressure like 20,000 psi. If your hand gets sprayed, pressure will cut through the skin and diesel will go into blood stream. From there, it depends how quickly you get to hospital, only hand might have to be amputated, or more. People also have died from this kind of injuries when left untreated.
@@bahopik This is the low pressure side he's working with. 30 psi or so. . .meh. . . It's after the cp3. . . That where the death is.
@@raceadodge in the video he refers to bleeding at the injector witch is what I was referring to. Not sure where your injectors are but mine are after the pump on the high pressure side.
What about that raptor lift pump for third gens? Any more details and install stuff for that? Good info. I don’t check the bowl ever only drain some fuel out. When I do lift pump check, I open up the supply line before the filter so I don’t dump dirty fuel in the bowl.
Raptor available in 100gph and 150gph flow rates. All hoses wiring harness etc included. fuel filter change would be at the OEM intervals. We can email installation manuals.
I jus spray it out with cab cleaner and valve open !
I would add Vaseline to the orings, and the threads. Also it’s best if you don’t touch the filter bare handed. The oils from your hand can mess with the water separating ability, use gloves.
hi i have a 06 5.9 turbo 6speed mercedes benz with 200k on it runs great but when i pull my 5th wheel its 10k its doggy going up hills what can i check first thx
Definitely better off hand grinding drill bits unless your drilling into butter one time
Say you change your filter and you drain all the diesel out of the canister what's typically the problem if it will not refill the canister
👍
Don't leave fuel in the canister. That puts contaminated diesel on the clean side of the filter.
Do you have any videos of doing a rear main seal on a 04 5.9 Cummins
Soon.
Can you explain how to change the 99 year filter. I am having problem bleeding I have cracked 3 injectors j just need instructs from the beginning like you did this video. Is that possible.
czcams.com/video/XHhY7sLkPwo/video.html
You cant go by this i got s bad batch of diesel once had to change the fuel filter 3 times in one week always carry extra filters
This has lots of valuable information. However, please ask your cameraperson to use two hands so they are more stable and use a tripod whenever possible.
Don't you drain the fuel filter to make sure any dirty diesel gets out of the system. This way you could be washing the exterior of the filter into the canister, new filter goes in and some of the dirty fuel bypasses the filter
lube o-rings, filter will go in easier
Is that die diesel the stuff meant for construction or agro equipment, it’s the same colour I use in my backhoe.
I looked awfully yellow to me, so no it's not red dyed diesel.
It looked like road use tax diesel , not red die off-road use only diesel. They both work the same just one cost extra to cover road maintenance cost.
I can smell this video
Deep breaths. 😁
I changed my filter last week and there was brass filings in there. Have you seen that before ?
MIKE JOBGEN.....You need to use UNLEADED DIESEL that will keep the LEAD FILINGS OUT.....
Replaced two injectors now won't start... Tried to bleed air still won't start how do u properly bleed system anyone know thankx
Hi good video could you help me fix the problem in my 2003 Ram 2500 cummins it rises the engine oil level and thank you
If oil level is rising, probably suspect something going on with your injectors or high pressure injections system. Have injectors tested and the overall engine compression tested as well.
Just use a Crescent wrench.
I replaced this with a cat filter.
I use a AFE 44-FF010 fuel filter. on my 2004 Cummins 5.9. Pricey ($34) , but it is rated at 3 microns, 99% efficiency.
Thank you for this! I've just had to replace my injectors and the believed cause was this truck having the 7 micron stock filters used. That isn't nearly enough filtration I was told. I almost bought a new lift pump just for the filters being 2 microns but 3 in the stock housing is great! 06 3500 with a raptor 4g lift pump, no filters.
FS19856 is the only filter i see on your website!
Give us a call and we can find the filter you need 1-859-737-4966.
I have an issue maybe you can help with. 2004 5.9. Truck would overfuel on occasion and actually ran away on me, requiring me to turn off ignition. It has over 200000 miles and I thought it would be a good time to install a complete set of injectors. After install I ran the unit up and checked for leaks, all good. I shut down and afterwards developed a no start problem. Checked lift pump operation ok. Cracked 1 3 4 injectors and found minimal pressure present. Im thinking rail relief valve issue, what are your thoughts.
Never open injection lines on a common rail. Also, when the lines are open the system will not build pressure enough to start. That being said, I would think that you have a feed tube that isn't torqued correctly. Retorque all feed tubes.
When a 2006 dodge ram Cummins, how do you check the fuel pressure from the tank to the filter?
You can remove the inlet bolt at the CP3 and get a fuel pressure bolt that we offer to be able to screw any 1/8 NPT fuel pressure gauge into.
I think canister design is dumb should be facing down that way debris won't settle down in there
how to replace return fuel line at the the fuel filter canaster
Cardi b playing in the truck. Haha
Could you drain the can, replace the filter and pour the drained fuel back in? Obviously checking for debris but overall no harm no foul?
Risky.
