  • Breeze Airways, founded by serial airline entrepreneur David Neeleman, operates a very unique network of point-to-point flights between smaller cities. I flew them from Providence to Pittsburgh to see what it was like on board!

At Long Island-MacArthur, Breeze has nonstop flights (as of 2024) to Virginia (Norfolk and Richmond), Maine (Portland), the Carolinas (Raleigh/Durham and Charleston), and Vero Beach, FL! Currently most flights out of MacArthur go to Florida, though transatlantic low-cost carriers have looked into using MacArthur! The area around Ronkonkoma station and Long Island-MacArthur has been going through some amazing change as it wants to attract more airlines like it! The current southern lot of the LIRR's Ronkonkoma station will be transformed into a new community with a hotel, a life sciences hub, daily services and destination retail, a convention center, and a new north terminal for the airport to better connect the airport with the station, connecting it with an 1800-foot pedestrian corridor! This project goes with the TOD residential project north of the Ronkonkoma station called Station Yards! In total, the Ronkonkoma Hub will feature 1,450 new apartments, 360,000 square feet of office space, and 195,000 square feet of new retail space!

My takeaway is that amtrak needs to extend the keystone and electrification to pittsburgh

    • @johnchambers8528
      @johnchambers8528 Před 2 měsíci +1

Amtrak is extending one more train to Pittsburgh in the near future. However electrification of the route between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh would have to be a Norfolk Southern decision. There would never be enough passenger trains to justify the large investment. Norfolk Southern does run plenty of freight traffic to possibly justify electrification but even then that would mean even more investment in routes and yards that Conrail took out when they abandoned electric operation. So unless fossil fuel prices would get much more expensive and for long term they never could justify electric operations. Also the freight railroads are beginning to experiment with hydrogen as a new environmentally friendly fuel source. If it works out some day even long haul mainline engines may run on that fuel. That would negate the need for all that fixed costs of electric train operation.

@@seprishere While these trains are well patronized I do not feel there would be the demand for any better than hourly service on the Philadelphia to Harrisburg portion of the line. The Harrisburg city is mostly dead at night so there would be little demand for service there much latter than what is provided now.

One correction on your report. Besides water, coffee & hot tea are available free in all 3 classes (A220) or 2 classes (E190/195). I have flown MX to/from CAK & MCO, PBI, & LAS, all in Nicest (except PBI because it was an E195) & do not find them "bizarre". The fares were very reasonable. The round trip CAK/LAS was only $448.00 up front (this was over a year ago; fares are higher today but still cheaper than Legacy carriers). Only one flight was 25 minutes late (crew made up some time & reached destination gate only 10 minutes late). Most flights arrived early & the load factor was high on all. We are flying them next week CMH-SNA up front in Nicest for only $308.00 one way. Next month, I'm flying CAK-LAX for $354.00 in Nicest section & returning on UA LAX-CLE (CLE is only 40 miles from CAK) & my First/Business Class ticket on them is $856.00. You should fly in the Nicer section. Out of curiosity, I researched fares for June 19 (MX PVD-PIT; DL BOS-PIT). MX was $168. in Nicer & that includes 1 free checked bag, advanced seat assignment, & 3" more legroom. DL flights that day are $259. Comfort+ ($309 for fully refundable). I fly DL & UA a lot but find myself using MX more & more. It will be nice when their fleet is only the A220 for scheduled service.

Until 1854, Rhode Island had FIVE state capitals that rotated, Kingston, Providence, Newport, Bristol and East Greenwich! Yes, five! Similar to how South Africa has three capitals, Cape Town as the legislative capital, Pretoria for the executive capital, and Bloemfontein for the judicial capital. Providence became the sole Rhode Island capital in 1900! Although Roger Williams founded the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, another European showed up in Rhode Island before Roger Williams did. William Blaxton from Lincolnshire, decided to join the Ferdinando Gorges Expedition in 1623. Ferdinando Gorges is the man heavily involved in British colonization of New England, including having a land grant for Maine, but never actually set foot in the Americas. Back to William. The expedition of 1623 was considered a failure and while most of his fellow settlers returned home, he decided to live on the Shawmut Peninsula (now old Boston) alone in 1625. Making him the first European to settle Boston (Blaxton's land is now Boston Common)
However, he didn't stay there as he didn't like leaders of the Boston church, so he decided to move south to what is now Cumberland, Rhode Island. The first to settle Rhode Island in 1635, one year before Roger Williams founded the Providence Plantations.

    T. F. Green Airport was dedicated on September 27, 1931 as Hillsgrove State Airport, with two air shows that drew a crowd of over 150,000, drawing what was at that time the largest crowd to attend a public function in the country! Hillsgrove State Airport was renamed after Theodore Francis Green in 1938 who had just been elected to the Senate two years earlier and was Rhode Island's governor from 1933 to 1937. He was in the Senate from 1937 to 1961 and served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1957 to 1959. At the time of his retirement in 1961, he set the record at age 93 of the oldest person to serve in the Senate. The record was subsequently broken by notorious SC senator Strom Thurmond who turned 100 in 2002 while in office and retired in 2003.

I ended up flying into my local airport for the first time in April when I was coming back from seeing the eclipse in Buffalo. I actually saw the eclipse at Niagara Falls Ontario but I flew home the next day from Buffalo. Originally I booked a flight to Washington DC so I could take the Virginia breeze bus home. A week before the trip Delta Airlines canceled my flight and rebooked me on another flight that got in 3 hours after the last bus of the day left. Fortunately they gave me one free rebooking. All the flights that arrived in time to catch the bus were solid out so I lost my money i paid for the bus ticket but I sure didn't want to have to pay for a hotel in DC especially booking less than a week in advance. I looked at flights to the Charlottesville airport and to my great surprise I found one that was only 9 dollars more than my old ticket was and they were willing to put the entire price I payed for the original ticket towards the new one. I decided to buy the ticket. Getting home was still quite an adventure. There's absolutely no transit to the Charlottesville Airport so I had to walk 7 kilometers through a rich neighborhood and down a long paved walking and biking trail to nearest bus stop and took that bus to where I could catch the bus to the downtown transit station and take the commuter bus back to the edge of my hometown. I was able to take the local bus a little deeper into town but I still had to walk another three kilometers to finally get home. Uber wanted 135 dollars to get home from the airport. I did it for just 3.50 and a set of slightly sore knees 🤣

I was engaged to my now-wife long distance for 2.5 years, in college. Her first flight ever was to come see me there. Southern Airways Express from BWI to Morgantown. Before this, she swore she would never get on a plane (her birthday happens to be September 11th). She loves to tell people how we had a love so strong, it got her on a plane, and "a puddle jumper, no less!"

I want to fly Breeze, but I'd have to get to another location where they have flights for them first since my state doesn't have Breeze Airways services.
Also I feel like their routes are a bit odd and make no sense to me, which you also did mention were unusual too. I've been curious about them ever since I first heard about them in 2021.
Just need a good flight path to consider and going from there. But I also don't want to get on one of their flights without having a reason to be my eventual destination. (I like going places to explore them and find out something new about them I didnt know before), though nothing wrong with just traveling somewhere just to travel.
    Great video as always!

I have flown them several times to/from CAK with LAS, PBI, & MCO. Very impressed with service & price. They might seem like odd city pairs but the flights were nearly full. One CAK-PBI flight I was on, was sold out. Next week, flying them CMH-SNA & next month CAK-LAX. Sitting up front in their Nicest seats is much cheaper than my flights on DL or UA in their First/Business class.

    PVD…ahhh…know it well.
Let me tell you young whippersnappers of a time when Southwest was still a low cost airline (they’re pretty much legacy now, but that’s a discussion for a different time) and they still had an “effect”.
There was a time over 20 years ago when PHL was a very expensive place to fly. US Airways had their fortress hub. And that rootin tootin cowboy Herb Kelleher came to save us from high prices. This was also a time when Southwest avoided big cities, so their flights to “Boston” were actually to Providence or Manchester, NH. In response to their four flights a day, US matched their $29 fares and flew like 17 times a day to PVD. You couldn’t drive to Boston for that little gas and tolls alone! One time US rolled out a 757 on this lane and the flight I was on had like 20 people on it. Insane!
One time I flew Southwest from PVD to ISP. It was the shortest flight in their system at the time. Fun fact, at that time, their longest flight was also from PVD: PHX. The sassy steward said the company requires us to offer a beverage. I’ll walk down the aisle with cups of Coke, Diet Coke, or Sprite. That’s it, no special orders. It took less than 20 minutes and I don’t think we got above 9000 ft.

It's a great concept for under-served cities left off the HUB part of the spoke in the aviation sector. I especially love the use of Embraer and Bombardier/Airbus aircraft and smaller, cozier airports. As someone with agoraphobia airports like JFK or Heathrow give me nightmares...
Edmonton, my hometown, is the same way. It took the launching of Flair Airlines, using a similar ULCC P2P route, to get us connected to other cities either directly with them or by forcing other airlines to offer better services. Westjet just launched a daily Edmonton-Atlanta flight for example giving us a daily Southeastern flight for the first time, though we've lost our New York and Chicago ones since the pandemic... And while it might not be cheaper than connecting via Calgary or Toronto it's at least less stressful and more direct for the people nearby... Always a bonus...

Iberia only has 1 flight out of Nice, back to Madrid. However, the bus I had to take was very early. Thankfully, European airports have landside shops, so I had 90mins-2hrs still to wait and could get breakfast even on top of the bus being like 40mins+ late like it was going from Marseille to Cannes days earlier
