In The Fifth Risk, Lewis portrayed Donald Trump as a man totally ignorant of and disinterested in the actually functioning of the federal government. The book’s title refers to the potential catastrophe that an administration fails to plan for and prevent.

I totally understand. I have NOT watched trump's rally for the last 4 days. And, by the 3rd day of trump detox, I was back to enjoying my love for watercolor painting.

Thank you Al Franken, love what you do, love your podcasts and I share all of them. I can understand the headaches esp with trump; one way to look at viewing the news is you are taking the time to be aware of what is truly going on - just image if it was all right wing, trump, repug narrative . I find your podcasts, news, and some great knowledgeable speaker like Noam Chomsky (and so many others) is helpful and cuts through all the trump noise . Your podcast, main stream news and various speakers give useful and truthful information to the public. I know it is hard right now and lots of information is coming at people, but if you look at what the trump and repugs are doing (making lots of noise-distractions to confuse the public) we have no choice but to cut through that noise and sort out what is relevant, truthful, factual, honest, and helps lift the fog so clear thinking prevails. By keeping the politics out of it and getting to the truth and facts makes for a more informed society that knows the man in the WH is a liar, con, wingnut who has to be voted out to save the US. Once again thanks for what you do with your podcast as you give voice to the words that need to be heard, and this helps cut through the garbage - appreciate your help in these tough time.

I have his book The Fifth Risk waiting to read. I start chemotherapy 5/1/20 for metastasized uterine cancer and will read it during my 6hr treatment. God bless dedicated medical staff and all the other people who clean and take care of everything behind the scenes. A friend recommended this podcast to me. I'm awfully late coming to this particular one with Michael Lewis but I just reread his "Fifth Risk" again and so it's great to hear his voice here. The Fifth Risk is really an excellent book. Another book that puts The Fifth Risk in perspective is Thomas Frank's "The Wrecking Crew"

I think the Wrecking Crew is Franks best work, and as most non-fiction books get dated and irrelevant, Franks Wrecking Crew is a treatise on the problem with Republicans/Conservatism/Libertarianism in the US that will be a perpetual enemy of the people and the country for as long as the country exists - so it should be required reading for all Americans.

When I watched Franken once or twice during senate committee questioning, he seemed well-prepared, strategic and skilled - one of, if not the best, on the committee. This interview with Michael Lewis would have been better if Franken had been similarly prepared.

I agree with you Al on how you would have handled this emergency. The only thing I would have added would have been a Coronavirus Czar (preferably a General) who would have been in charge of logistics and ramping up our companies to make PPE, testing kits, ventilators, etc. Love you Al and miss you being in our federal government.

Dearest Al - You sound understandably depressed and have a migrain - which may be a chicken and egg came first situation. I'm sorry to hear it, even though you sharing is giving a human voice to how so very, very many of us feel. I have noticed that I feel so much better when I minimize my exposure to the news, addictive as it may be. Intelligent commentators are good, but even minimizing that is helpful. Even though your work demands extra exposure to the news, I hope you can find some ways to reduce exposure. There is a great statement - you can only get rid of detachment with attachment. Instead of tryimg to detach from too much necessary news, do more of anything you love. Actually do it instead of agreeing it is a good idea. This is advice myself, as well. Warm best wishes.
If you wake up with headaches, you should get checked for sleep apnea to rule that out. It is very dangerous to not treat that condition.

What do you think about the chances of an extremely well qualified moderate Republican challenger to win over Trump supporters vs. the Dem frontrunner? I'm thinking William Weld, who may have dropped out. The most important thing is to get a new president who is experienced and educated that could win.

I could list a few Republicans who have on a rare occasion and always in a low key manner, have spoken out. Even Romney tried to hedge his bet when he voted for impeachment. But no Republican has shown the courage to consistently speak out in the public manner that would show he/she has the moral character needed to be the US president.

AT about 42 minutes. Michael Lewis mentions his Trump death clock and that by comparing how different countries responded to the pandemic it should be possible to count the numbers of excess deaths. Absolutely. There's your next book, except like The Big Short it will be as much about a subgroup, in this case disease statisticians, as it will be about the results. but that's why we love your books. Trump has been saying, 'well we didn't know' Of course that's utter nonsense. I was in Hong Kong when the 'SARS like' disease in Wuhan displaced Premier Xi's Belt and Road Initiative from the evening TV news. It was clear that this was serious, that it had gotten out of Wuhan and that it wasn't just headed to Hong Kong, it was headed everywhere. I've been wearing a mask since about January 20th. I was already an obsessive hand sanitizer user (since teaching middle and high school and being sick 2-3 times a year was typical, until... I started obsessively using hand sanitizer.) When I arrived at LAX the first week of February and they crammed every international passenger into the north end of the Immigration hall, I made a stink. And I was told, "We only have one sensor'. The lines we were in crossed other lines. Everyone entering the US that day, and probably every day the next two months was within a few feet of everyone else. Fortunately almost every passenger from Asia was wearing a mask. Clearly I had arrived back at a place where no one seemed to have a clue.
We're about to see in Georgia what happens when a place decides to 'reopen' against the advice of epidemiologists. Let's hope we don't think of this as the Georgia Nail Salon Suicide Pact. And what is the level of agreement and disagreement between epidemiologists? My impression is shades of gray, no white, no black, not even a warm or cool gray.
When Lewis asked Franken what would he do if he were president right now. Testing. Obvious. But there are two things going on at the moment: First how do we ramp up testing but also what do we do the next time if we don't have tests? What's the best thing to do at this point? and how do we prepare for a worst case scenario?
The ideal of course is at any point, hopefully early, 100 percent testing. Then anyone testing positive, has symptoms, or may have been exposed: two week quarantine. Result? immediate end of a pandemic. What's the worst course of action? Pretend there's nothing wrong and schedule a bunch of festivals, block parties, go on a cruise. In between are of course South Korea, Taiwan, California and New York. Small things, higher population density, a week's delay, etc.. makes a big difference. It all comes back to we have an infectious disease that given the same conditions worldwide is going to do the exact same thing. It should be possible to winnow out, masks, local weather, government response, almost any factor. It's an amazing, if sad, opportunity. Nassim Nicholas Taleb says, "Never waste a crisis. Learn something, change how you do things."
Shame on Al Franken for undermining the will of the voters by resigning over a faux controversy. Al Franken is brilliant, ethical and made a damn good Senator. It's so rare for his ilk to get into the halls of power. And he threw it all away
