in my opinion you have to know who jimin is to understand this song. jimin is someone who’s life is stage. one of the two members who was dancing ever since he knew of himself. he said it many times - for him, performing is everything. he struggled a lot in the past to become who he is now, because in their debut he was forced into this “macho man” role that didn’t really suit him. it took him a lot of time to accept all the different sides in him, and present them confidently to the fans and the world. now, he just enjoys it all. his personality is flirty and his aura just draws people in, people who see him perform live always say his stage presence is unmatched and that you can’t take your eyes off of him. he knows he can be cute and sexy and dominant and vulnerable, and he just accepts all of his different sides in this song. his duality is something that makes him who he is and he enjoys using it to make a great performance. taking off female clothes and putting them on himself, then putting on plain black clothes, only to come out of it all in a unique purple suit that can’t be defined as anything else than “jimin” shows how you can’t put him in any boxes. he is who he is and he will be whatever he wants to be. and he will always put out something new and exciting for his fans because he is a performer first and foremost and “being the same all the time is not fun”.
so for me this song is just jimin proving that he is a very unique person, someone who enjoys displaying different things on stage for his fans, and someone who refuses to be constrained by any bounds.
anyways it’s always fun to see all the different interpretations of bts’ songs! it just continues to prove how deep and complex their music is💜

Jimin's own words in a Spotify Interview, "Filters can be the things within a camera application or social media, but can also mean people's perspective or prejudice. I took these various meanings and expressed it into the song of how I want to present myself to the world in many different ways. I think I will be able to show a new side of me that's very different from my previous tracks, "Serendipity" and "Lie". Please look forward to it "Filter". - Spotify Interview, February 21, 2020.

During this performance Jimin had a tattoo on each hand that said Illucebra and Arcanus. People have noted that Illucebra is a feminine form and Arcanus is a masculine form. This refers to Jimin’s ability to go effortlessly between feminine and masculine qualities and also the anime/animus of our personas according to Karl Jung’s theory of The Map of the Soul. That's why he wears the clothes of the mannequin

The "femenine" and "masculine" is just a grammar thing of Latin and Latin-derived languages, like Spanish. I think the meaning of the words is what he was going for: illecebra is enticement, but also when that allur is caused by magic (the usual word in English for that is "glamour") and arcanus is both hidden/mysterious but also someone you'll confide your secrets too

please STOP with the gender thing goddamit. a monolingual english-speaking person has come up with that and fandom just ran with it because they just waaant Jimin as their "comfort person" to project onto. GRAMMATICAL gender doesn't mean ANYTHING. "tree" is male in German and Neutral in Russian and probably Female in some other language. in German "girl" is neutral and not feminine, do you think that means Germans think girls as not being female or something? of course not. because grammatical gender has nothing to do with human gender.
and yeah, this is literally bighit running some words through a translator app and slapping it on Jimin's palm. they have demonstrated quite a few time that they don't check their languages too much at all

this song is from MOTS: 7 and this album talks about the Persona, the Shadow and the Ego. I think the song talks about Jimin's Persona in front of the audience, when he is on stage. He can act cute, or sexy, or sensual, or sentimental/sad. Although I don't interpret it in a sad way, the performers create all these personas to give a better presentation and I could compare it with the actors, they have to "get rid of themselves" to do their job

    • @flyushkifly
      @flyushkifly Pƙed 2 lety +11

I've never interpreted it in a sad way, either. I've always seen the flip side - I think he is *most* himself being able to play all these roles and have fun with it. If this was on Love Yourself: Tear next to Fake Love, you can be sure I never would have thought that. That it is on MOTS7, though - it came at a time when everyone was making peace with all their parts and showing signs of being on the path to Individuation.
It's really interesting seeing this through Bryon's eyes!

    • @ruthfischer7615
      @ruthfischer7615 Pƙed 2 lety +6

It is more the shadow for me. People project so much on him and he has sometimes on purpose and sometimes involuntarily invited it: Sex god on stage/clumsy & cute of stage. Mind you quiet a few fans ignore one side entirely. Jimin has said before - jokingly - that he wants the fans to only see him. And well: there is the "Jimin effect" that quiet a few people have experienced.
When he was insecure he tried some of the stuff but I think it is also a call out while simlar saying he doesn't mind (often). It is a over the top song how some people feel about him/Idols/stars. As if they were the ones to force them and to only do it for them as an individual. Never thinking that it is not the entertainers fault if you are attrackted or even blaming them when you are the one developing feelings and they have no idea that you even exist.
The song - partly - reminds me of "Lie". Only here he is far more confident. But it is not him you see but his Persona/what you project.
Jimin is a man of masks, ambitious and private. (In Hogwarts houses he is definetly a Slytherin.) In reminds also of women dancing to Latin dances: seductive and letting people guess while heavily flirting: but is it only a game or is it sincere?
I think it is ambitious on purpose.
And - as said in the comments - BTS also did what "Destructive Media" questioned about: The theme of their "Love Yourself"-albums. Especially "Fake Love" and the aknowledgment in "Epiphany" that "I'm the one I should love". That is what goes a bit before "Filter".
As a whole "Filter" depicts a toxic relationship on both sides. Jimin in seemingly changing himself - and having no true self - but also in owning the listener and not letting them go. You don't own people, not even in a relationship. Which is another reason why I put a lot of the song in the "Shadow" part of self: greedy and unhealthy. Perhaps showing the saesang a mirror of what they are now/ what they are projecting.
Also that he changes clothes and some of them fall in the category of "girl clothes" is intersting. we already know that he wears shirts that were meant for women because "who is men?" anyway. So it is also a play with gender. I think there was something written in his hands but I can't remember the Latin (?) words.
Funny also the mention of the Disney movie "Aladdin": "whole new world", Genie, Aladdin... Aladdin tries to be a prince to get Jasmin but in the end his true success in the Disney Version is as himself.

  • @cieradivens3934
    @cieradivens3934 Pƙed 2 lety +41

Jimin really truly is amazing! I see this song as Jimin being in control of all the various personas and “filters” that he takes on and off and my opinion solidified after seeing his performance. The way he walks around trying on outfits (specifically male and female clothes), rejects them and puts on others, and then emerges with his own look and style in the end shows how at every point Jimin is the one in control of the change. Jimin is both the genie (granting wishes) and Aladdin (the one in charge). He is controlling our (the audience ) desire so he teases us and we may “pick a filter” (as if we have a choice lol) but in the end Jimin is aware of his allure and power. We all know Jimin has incredible duality and I’m glad he has embraced the many sides of himself. 💜

Here's info that some still aren't aware of:
❀JIMIN, at age 11, started studying, performing, & competing (winning every competition), in hip hop, popping (excelled), & street dancing, while attending the renowned Just Dance Academy in Busan where he's from! He was so good that an instructor even had the high tuition fee waived at one point! This was while also attending middle school, where he loved sports, being quite athletic, joined the football team, excellent at track, great at basketball, & billiards! Jimin also, all throughout his schooling, was known as a top scholar, achieving perfect scores, especially in math & science which just always came easy to him! Jimin was even class president for 9 yrs in a row! Jimin, all throughout his schooling, was also quite good in art class, as well as calligraphy.
Jimin, then also took up contemporary dance. The media, after seeing a performance of Jimin's performing at a huge Busan Festival Event, called Jimin "The rising star of Busan"!! JIMIN also studied ballet & traditional Korean dance while attending Busan High School of the Arts. Jimin still went to Just Dance Academy to take hip hop classes whenever he could because his first love has always been hip hop, even though he was now majoring in contemporary! JIMIN even had an offer to dance overseas, but declined because he also wanted to become a singer since the 2nd grade, to the dismay of one of his dance instructors who said "The world of dance was going to lose a great artist"!!
So Jimin then went and auditioned for BigHit Entertainment, (company BTS is signed with), being the very last member to join, being a trainee for only a few months (which is unheard of for most Kpop idols), as opposed to the 2-3 yrs of being a trainee the other members had! But Jimin was so good that he was assigned the official title of one of the two Main Dancers, as well as Lead Vocalist. Jimin was even assigned most of the high notes since the very beginning, because even without all that training in the beginning, he was that good, a natural born singer who, just like his dancing makes you feel every emotion and feeling he's trying to convey!
JIMIN, also, for 8 yrs, since a quite young boy, trained in various forms (4), of martial arts: Taekwondo (Blackbelt), Hapkido, Kumdo (Korean form of Kendo), & Chinese martial arts. He even won a scholarship, the only student to do so, to study more extensively in China for awhile! All the martial arts training has given JIMIN his phenomenal inner core strength, as well as his amazing flexibility, which has enabled Jimin to achieve all those breathtakingly spectacular gravity defying dance moves! JIMIN has found a way to incorporate all his various dance disciplines, as well as his extensive training in martial arts into his unique, ever so special, outstandingly amazing dancing abilities!!
JIMIN, has been called 'Stage Commander', known for his amazing, so mesmerizing stage presence. Each dance move is executed flawlessly, his extensions all the way to the fingertips, his lines so clean, his fluidity, his poise & elegance, his ever so graceful moves, but yet, sharp, quick & deliberate when required! He focuses on every detail! Known for his work ethics and being a perfectionist to a fault, spending hours in the practice room, will study every move, even focusing on hands to fingertips. Even his facial expressions, or the look in his eyes! Every single detail he focuses on. Jimin tends to take in the music and interprets all the emotion & feelings, whatever it's trying to convey through his body movements as well as his vocals.
JIMIN has now won the prestigious titles for 3 yrs in a row, for both KING OF KPOP, as well as also winning BEST TOP #1 DANCER IN KPOP, also now 4 yrs in a row!! Jimin is also referred to as "Rookie's Bible" because all rookie idols, try to emulate & study every move he makes, trying to learn from him! Aside from all that Jimin has won other countless award, broken many records. His 6 solos (including Jimin's OST), have broken charting records worldwide, as well as being top seller, plus most listened to. Also breaking records for being #1 branding marketing idol, every single month for now, 3 yrs, a feat never achieved before, and still ongoing! The term the "Jimin Effect" is now in the Urban Dictionary! So much more as well but will stop here.
I'll leave in the reply, links to some must see breathtaking spectacular solo perfromances of Jimin's that are not only safe to post & react to on YT, but the absolute best versions, as well as compilations that show Jimin's equally phenomenally amazing abilities, talent, skills, & athleticism.

♊Jimin said in an interview that he wanted the concept of the song to be to present himself to the world in many different ways! Jimin also said that it's about perspective & prejudices as well!! Aside from saying in the song that I can be anything you (army) want me to be for you, I believe that Jimin is also trying to tell so many army that keep saying things like he's insecure, weak, or helpless, and needs protecting, or just cute or sexy, or just any one thing, whatever army indeed wants to think he is, isn't the real him! That he wears whatever 'filter' that army wants him to be, but indeed in reality is so not him!!
That's why army are continually surprised when they see a glimmer of the real Jimin, the way more self assured, demonstrative, take charge, confident, charismatic, alluring, at times sexy, person that kills on stage! So this (pure genius) song, that the CEO 'Hit-Man Bang' (called that since way back when, as a producer, whatever he was involved in became a hit) Mr. Bang Si Hyuk, himself, was actually involved in writing the ever so genius lyrics, that Jimin had a hand in as well.
The song's lyrics have more then one meaning!! So Jimin has pretty much been doing this since the beginning, playing the role of whatever army seems to prefer for him, but in actuality, hardly anyone knows the real Jimin! So much more then what many army believe him to be. Plus since Jimin never talks much about all his amazing past achievements, abilities, and accomplishments, even before ever joining BTS, many army are still unaware of so much.

I’m surprised at all the comments who see filter as happy or empowering or light-hearted flirting, I guess that’s the beauty of music to allow for different interpretations. For me it’s more of a desperate, sad, almost horror-like feel to be honest - especially considering he chose to place this in the shadow part of the album. Like you said, I think it’s about his persona as a performer/entertainer and the way he’s constantly having to provide the audience with new sides of him just so they (we) don’t get bored. The way he wore feminine clothes and masculine clothes in the live adds to this.
“Look at me, I’ve suddenly turned into a child” contrasting with the sexy dance moves - just like how he always flipflops between cute/baby/adorable/mochi jimin who gives out hugs and falls off chairs and sexy/adult/intense dancer and performer jimin who many people thirst over and is almost like a fantasy sex symbol
 “which me do you want?”
It’s like he knows there no way to change this dynamic we’ve all (accidentally?) created together, so he’s choosing to take ownership over it and be the only thing we want, to keep our attention, since we (and the media) are the one who “made” him.
Those are some of my thoughts, at least

I agree that this can be seen as a darker song but that it can also pertain to an entertainer, just ‘performing’ for the public/fans. Since ARMY know how smart and deep Jimin truly is, we can’t help but wonder if there’s so much more behind this. But I don’t believe this was written by Jimin so I will enjoy the lighter meaning of the song, that of an entertainer performing for his fans. @simiemandla1542 Pƙed rokem

I think both interpretations are actually two sides of the same coin. It all comes together to create the FULL picture.
Yes, he's not saying it's all fun and games having to be a chameleon and keep people interested and invested in your art, when your face and body ARE the art.
Because you can't get away from the fact that ART within itself is almost inherently made to be "judged", evaluated and given a price value. THAT is the very nature of art. At least in our era. Looked at for entertainment, coveted by those with the means to purchase it, judged for worth and looked at through a magnifying glass for cracks and mistakes, and checked for authenticity.
NOW, Imagine when YOU are the art being combed over like that, it must be incredibly difficult.
Then you have to maintain your poise no matter what the verdict of the judgement is, and continue producing more artistic expressions to keep everyone interested.
AT THE SAME TIME, Jimin is no damsel in distress and is not asking for sympathy here.
He LOVES AND OWNS the fact that he can influence the viewer of the art (him), by changing the art into whatever he wants it to be in the moment.
Making you SEE what he WANTS you to see, KNOW only what he WANTS you to know about him, and love and appreciate what it is that he is giving you, whatever he chooses that to be in the moment.
He is both, the Genie, (granting wishes), AND Aladdin, (the owner and controller of the lamp), so he's kinda telling us he has an almost omniscient view on everything at all times.
As the one who is the creator AND the art, simultaneously, entertainers HAVE that unique perspective that OTHER kinds of artists don't.
BEING the creator of the art, being THE ART being appreciated and ALSO being able to EXPERIENCE and WITNESS people experience you as art...
      It must be A TRIP...
Personally, I think this song is the connector in the album between the Persona side and the shadow side... it embodies both for me, despite the decidedly upbeat presentation.
Kind of reminiscent of Jimin's OWN personality, actually.
He's usually quite a buoyant character, funny to where he seems silly, flighty and spacey. Usually known for being sweet/cute, which are traits a lot of people take as easy, almost superficial type personalities.
When in actual fact there is SO MUCH going on below the surface with him.
His intelligence, intellectual pursuits, emotional intelligence, self-awareness, awareness of others' emotional states, ability to read a room and influence it as he pleases, his tendency to introspect, his creativity, unorthodox ideas, versatility, eye for detail, continually in flux with regards to how he presents himself, and his determination and perseverance are all SOME of the clear indicators that he is anything BUT a shallow pond.

Below are some quotes regarding the performance and lyrics of Filter and I agree with them so hard! Thank you for your reaction!
"The entirety of Filter--lyrics and performance--is just one big giant middle finger to gender in the most artistic way possible. The neutral outfit, then the womens' clothes, to the more masculine outfit, and finally to his sleek red suit? Incredible."
"Where in Lie Jimin was struggling under the weight of what people expected of him, in Filter he has learned to twist those expectations to his advantage. He's no longer afraid to embrace the more 'masculine' side of himself, because now he realizes that it's just another tool for him--another 'filter'. He can be masculine, he can be feminine, he can be cute, he can be sexy, and so on. He no longer feels like he's being forced into any one particular box, but he acknowledges that other people DO still try to force him into said boxes.
The difference is, it doesn't bother him anymore. Now, he's saying "what do you want me to be? I can be anything you want". He's aware of his own power and versatility, and he now knows that he can use that power to his advantage."

Did you know for BTS’ upcoming anthology Jimin choose to include this song (Filter) and Friends to represent himself. This his statement as to why (translated by btsbaragi jk):
“The songs I wanted to include in this album were “Filter” and “Friends”. Personally, I wanted to show [you] all the different/colorful sides of myself that you are all looking forward to. I also have many colors left/remaining to [continue to] show you in the future as well. However, I think that if I conformed only to the thoughts of other people without [having] my own [distinct] color, I would not have looked colorful and would have rather looked colorless, but I think it is my friends- the members and you all, ARMYs,- who enabled me to think about what my essence is and keep me balanced/centered. You all are my Proof. “

Jimin has this funny little habit of changing mannerisms depending on what he wears/how he is presented when on stage. Does he have a more cutesy look? He acts cute and kinda childlike. Is he in something more serious like a suit? He is precise, powerful, and a professional performer 100%. Is he in something more open or more sensual? Hold onto your butts, because here comes the charm! Casual sweater and ripped jeans? He's loose and free like a college kid at a friend's party.
Filter touches on how he can be all these different versions of himself, while still being one man at his core. (While also teasing fans claiming to be whatever they want him to be; he has the versatility for it!)
At least, that's how I see it anyway! Thanks for the reaction my dude! 💜💜

For me I interpret it as Jimin accepting all the different perspective and persona that fans created of him in their minds. It's like an acceptance song, because for his song LIE, he's having a hard time for having a Park Jimin persona (his real self) and a BTS Jimin persona (the Jimin fans see). For him it's like he's lying to everyone even in himself for having two or more different sides of him. And I think in filter, he's accepting it... That every fans or the people around him can perceived him as to what kind of Jimin they see, so for him basically It doesn't matter anymore because all the kind of Jimin that they're all seeing is still him.

Just wanted to note the PLACEMENT of this song on the album - between Black Swan that says/asks "Do your thing/what's my thing?" and My Time which is more introspective - I believe we're still mid journey within the Map of the Soul on discovering ourselves and Filter provides one of the natural responses with I'll be whatever you want. Also it can be seen as I CAN be whatever as well. I like how they integrate many meanings of 'filter' to include photography, social media, etc so we could interpret what we relate to, the point of the song.

I don’t know if you’ve heard the term “the Jimin effect” or the saying, “ once you Jim-in you can’t Jim-out.” The first one refers to the effect that Jimin has on men, particularly straight men. The other is mostly about how once you get to know him, you can’t help but to love him. I interpret this song, and I may be wrong, as his acknowledgement that people perceive him as they wish to see him, therefore, the filter. We don’t really know who he is or the other members for that matter. We only know their personas.

I think that a person's interpretation and understanding of this song-as with all meaningful art--reflects ourself. It is interesting that Jimin spoke about this song drawing on various meanings. I enjoy reading the comments and discovering other perspectives for this song. I personally think this song is classic BTS--where careful listeners are rewarded with richness of meaning and reflection. For me, I do sense a darkness to this piece when you take into account the themes of MOTS:7 and the lyrics. And I think no matter how much you love what you do, there is a toll paid for pursuing what you love. It may be worth it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt at times. I think "Filter" encompasses both the rewards and cost of living your life in the public's eye and for others.

I think there is also a third way to interpret this , given the Jungian theme of the album. He could be talking to himself, asking himself what Persona he wants to show to the world. Towards the end he says 'We will be come a new us'. The we/us could be his persona/ego/shadow.
I'm really enjoying this series of videos. I also like that you're not pretending to love songs that aren't to your taste just to please the audience. I don't really see it as him changing himself as a person. He used to try and do it in the past and he's grown from it. To me, this song is actually more him ballancing out his need to please others with being himself, because he talks about filters in the song. That means that he's only changing his stage persona as needed in the situation, but he's aware he's doing it and has control over it, while still keeping his own self intact under the "filter". That way, he can feel like he provides other people what they need without destroying himself in the process, like he used to do in the past. It also actually shows that he's moving past worrying what people think about him so much, because he's basically inviting people to create their own version of him in their heads. That actually shows pretty strong security in your own self, because if you're insecure, you feel the need to control how people percieve you and want them to see you just one way, since that's easier to control.
I actually saw it in a sad way too when I first heard the song, but when I went through Jimin's journey and growth, the lyrics actually started to sound very different to me.

You are the first person who reacts to the lyrics with a different perspective. This song is in the context of Persona album and a reminder that what we see is not necessarily Jimin himself and he is doing an analogy about people's layers in social media. It makes sense when you check their work in context. Each member explored a side of the persona with their solos. If you want to check more deep Jimin's work I recommend you Lie or Serendipity. Filter is special for us because of the perfomance 😉

I can see your interpretation of the song. It's a cautionary tale, I think, about what could happen if you let yourself be changed by social media, either as the consumer or as the creator. In the song, the artist changes himself to appeal to the viewer, but eventually the viewer is changed to match the new image. It's almost like a double damnation.

Just a reminder, you’re right about having backing tracks in this video, but please take note that they actually do go totally raw for a lot of their performances too, even those with dancing. It depends on the occasion. They are actually pretty famous for that. You’ll be able to hear it quite obviously when you do more live reactions in the future, they actually sometimes even stop in the middle of the track to prove that there isn’t a backing track. Sometimes their voice cracks or misses the timing to sing, or does adlibs out of nowhere, you’ll realize it’s totally live with just the instrumentals. They also perform with live bands from time to time. Their concerts are usually completely live for most of the stages except some with very challenging choreo. So some of their performances are with backing tracks, some are not, gotta listen for it haha, depends on the occasion

i know this is an older one, sorry, i was just thinking about this song and found your reaction haha. it's interesting to see people's reactions to this song and the lyrics. unsure if anyone has already commented about it on here before, but since the entire album was based on psychology, i always heard this song as a specific personification of a person's Filter: the way we socially construct ourselves and determine how we want to appear to others, what we want to say, what is appropriate for a specific situation. hence all the words about "since you made me" and "a new us". I never saw it as directed to anyone in particular, rather hes just that concept personified in a way... talking to himself? or even to the listener. it's always been one of my favorite songs on this album because of that, along with the rapline's 3 being persona, shadow, and ego (again, personifying a concept of psychology)
    great video!!

In my opinion, I think part of that is just being a celebrity where people put their expectations on the people.
But, more than that, a filter doesn't change the source material. The source material is unchanged; it's just the perception that changes from person to person.

And people have so many different versions of themselves and it's a point of this song. Jimin on stage and off stages is totally different. Even Jimin of BTS, Park Jimin, Jimin in yesterday, today and tomorrow is all different too. He can put every side of himself out just pick filter for him.

Many have said this already, but this is not a sad song about burying himself under other people’s projections. You’re not the first reactor I have seen interpret it this way and it’s an easy leap to make if you don’t know Jimin and his history.
This song actually is a personal empowerment song about embracing his complex and multi-faceted self. His struggle to understand and embrace his identity has been a large part of Jimin’s expression as an artist. Here he is unabashedly saying he is complicated and has many sides and he can show them all to you now, without fear or shame and be any of them. Just tell him which him you want and he can show it to you now without fear.

This is LITERALLY what I say all the time, when I watch some people react to Jimin, see him for the first time, or write comments about him in videos.
This is a general view of mine on this by the way.
It is NOT about this SPECIFIC reactor, who I think is quite respectful and open to different perspectives in how others present themselves.
This is MY take on OTHER reactors and commenters and the sometimes naive or condescending way they address Jimin content etc.
So, I feel like ppl like to push JIMIN in whatever specific direction THEY can personally deal with, are comfortable with or are a part of.
Whether that's forcing the heteronormative side, or some part of the LGBTQ+ spectrum. What a lot of ppl don't get is that, Jimin is indefinable. He is whatever he pleases, whenever he pleases. And it's taken him a little bit, to get to the point he is now, where he can push past the boundaries and labels ppl set for him, and just be himself.
Now he does so wherever he is, no matter who's watching or what he's doing. Just like the plush character Jimin designed, Chimmy, (Whom he incidentally said HAS no gender, and that Chimmy could be WHATEVER chimmy wanted, WHENEVER chimmy wanted), Jimin does what he wants. (SUGA as well echoed this with HIS character, because our BTS boys are awesome).
I believe that BESIDES the obvious talent and abilities he has as a performer, THAT'S a MAJOR part of what captures people's attention, mesmerises fans and keeps people from all walks of life and identities in his thrall.
He represents EVERYONE in SOME way, and everyone sees some part of themselves to indentify with, within JIMIN. That is essentially what the JIMIN EFFECT IS.
People just call it an "EFFECT" because it's difficult to define what EXACTLY it is that's grabbing your attention about him and not letting go, and it's easier to accept it happening to you if it's seen as some kind of "OTHER" phenomenon sweeping over the masses (which isn't wrong).
The reason MOST videos about the "JIMIN EFFECT" though, are about GUYS falling for his charms, isn't because it doesn't happen to WOMEN, it's just that in our social structure, women are EXPECTED to fall for charm no matter who it's in, man or woman, but ALSO by default we're EXPECTED to fall for charming MEN, and visa versa men with women (ALL the movies got that from SOMEWHERE).
The reason it's so "alarming" or "surprising", when it happens to men with a charming MAN is because, ESPECIALLY in Western and/African cultures, men don't tell OTHER MEN when they're handsome, charming, attractive, sexy etc. This is all regarded as not "macho" or masculine, or seen as a definite precursor to a gay sexual orientation.🙄
The thing about JIMIN is that he has somehow; with all his talent, beauty and charisma, managed to unintentionally circumvent that mindset and brainwashing, by making it impossible for men watching him, to revert to their default setting of "that's gay" or "that's girly", "pause" etc. etc. because they are too preoccupied with the awesomeness they are witnessing, to stop themselves.
SOME might START OFF saying stuff like that, or seeming uncomfortable expressing how watching Jimin gets them excited, but soon enough they just don't bother with pre-qualifiers, or care to define anything.
It just starts off that way Because to THEM, getting excited in ANY WAY while watching another male be charming, sexy and attractive automatically moves into sexuality territory, because men are taught that THAT (sexually) is the only way a man can find another man attractive, and that it's WRONG.
As opposed to how, as women, we are allowed to explore ALL the different facets of human emotion, and get to express those emotions in whatever way we see fit, on a situational basis, without it affecting how ppl think our sexual orientation is, unlike the few set situations and specific reactions men are told they can show at ALL .
JIMIN is the wondrous anomaly, that has created a space where theses different sides get to meet.
The way heterosexual couples together get to enjoy JIMIN'S otherworldy performance ability, incredible personality and ETHEREAL BEAUTY, without the men's fear of judgement and or persecution or labeling, is a breath of fresh air, and is creating a movement away from toxic masculine ideologies that have been instilled in men since time immemorial, towards a healthy open-minded clean-hearted appreciation for beauty and excellence in ALL it's incarnations, regardless of gender, religion, sexual identity or race. Ad making it so men are more emotionally available and expressive in a positive way, without feeling their masculinity is in danger.
This INCREDIBLE creature has made this possible by doing nothing more than just BEING HIMSELF.
Jimin is ending THE WORLD'S toxic gender prejudices, one reaction video at a time...
It may seem hyperbolic to say "THE WORLD", but I DO mean it QUITE LITERALLY.
BTS, and, by default, its individual members (especially world media darling Jimin), have world-wide power and influence.
You don't get nominated as your country's presidential envoys, or get invited to foreign presidential residences to make impactful speeches on behalf of an entire continent of people, without universal clout. Not to mention, breaking records previously set by World Icons. Even just selling out luxury brand goods because you WORE something is incredible influence.
As such, anything they do, say, support or engender, is impacting people on a Global scale and creating shifts in society's mindset.
THAT'S why the term "THE JIMIN EFFECT" is now in the URBAN DICTIONARY alongside previously revolutionary social and entertainment coined terms like Beyonce's "BOOTYLICIOUS", which was the beginning of the end of rail-thin bodies being the only socially acceptable standard for beauty amongst women. Back then, Beyonce made it okay for women to love their bodies and be confident in how they look, and society has come a long way since then, in freeing people, women especially, from scary and unrealistic body standards to love their bodies.
NOW, JIMIN is making it okay to be yourself, whatever that means to you individually, whatever you identify as, (even as he identifies as a male), and has started changing MEN's minds about how they choose to express themselves, not being constrained in how, when and where they appreciate and support each other, and breaking the stereotypes of society, where gender stereotypes in fashion, creative expression and art are concerned. And also just IN LIFE...
His positively chameleon-esque appearance, versatile and indefinable voice and almost mercurial aura, make it impossible NOT to be intrigued, and his incredible talent and beautiful personality make NEW fans of passersby EVERY moment of the day.
THIS is what has the whole world so intrigued, and has everyone's interest piqued in so many DIFFERENT artistic mediums and even industries.
It's the reason why his fans span from political leadership, elite athletes, Other entertainers, to being muse to major artists from all different mediums in existence, ALL the way to his other masses of fans that run the gamut of age, race and gender of the world in its entirety. He truly is a Marvel of creative eexpression and genius.
    THAT'S my TEDtalk on JIMIN...đŸ˜‚đŸƒđŸŸâ€â™€ïžđŸ˜‘

He doesn't really say I will be whoever you want as you mentioned. He says I will be ANYTHING (your hero (see anpanman) your baby boy, ...), for you and he even mention the child in me, so he will be cute, genie as the person who give you what you want. He says anyway you made me and this I took it as, him being Jimin of BTS, did discover he is so much more than he originally was, in the good way. Like he did developed so many skills and roles thanks to ARMY. I don't know may be is just me being super positive I never thought it as a dark theme.

I think you have a point I never took it that way though. Since he kind of say "pick the ME you want" I took it as "today is a good day so I can be the ME you want: the funny me, the sexy me, the crumpy funny me..." I never thought he could mean a fabricated ME. When you put a filter the reality still there, you are just decorating it or adapting it for playing mainly. As indeed we decorate ourselves when we wearing a cool looking or jewellery, you are not a different person.
But your point of view is interesting to me too. I never considered it before.

And generally about toxic behaviors that are romanticized. Filter is super sad when you put it besides Fake love and Singularity. It's very much in the same vein. Lie talks about wanting to get back to a place of innocence, Serendipity is about a romance that over takes you. If you watch the music video you see it start out cute and fluffy then ends with the house shaking and falling apart. So yeah I agree with you on the sad message .

A must see, absolutely legendary live performance I'd love for you to react to as well, is: ❣ BTS (방탄소년닚) JIMIN "SERENDIPITY" Live Performance (English Lyrics) 2019 BTS Speak Yourself Tour Japan. Link in reply. Seeing a full live performance, this time, from the sold out, 80K stadium, filmed in Osaka, Japan from the 2019 BTS Speak Yourself World Tour, is preferable. Jimin's so amazing, so mesmerizingly spectacular artistry, stage presence, vocals, his phenomenal dancing, as well as the equally amazing choreography, by Brian Puspos, who Jimin is close friends with, & have worked together a few times over the yrs, are all such must sees. Also hearing Jimin's so stunningly amazing vocal abilities in real time is always preferable! Which you'll all see here while reacting to this so iconic, breathtakingly amazing performance!! There's a reason why Jimin was not only haven the official title of Main Dancer & Lead Vocalist since BTS debuted, but also has been awarded the prestigious titles of both King of Kpop, now 3 yrs in a row, as well as Best Kpop Dancer, also for 4 yrs in a row.

these are absolute must see best versions of, absolutely breathtakingly spectacular, but also safe to see on YT, solo performances of Jimin's. Many other versions like stage mixes, tend to ruin the flow, & over edit, so Jimin's amazing dancing & choreography aren't shown properly. Plus always better to see Jimin's equally spectacular vocals in real time. Plus not only are these safe to see but filmed the best, also showing best performances. Actually, this is not sad at all, bcz he is not saying he will change himself, he is saying that he has many diff sides to him, many diff charismas & so anyone can fall for him no matter what preferences u have coz he has everything anyone would want... that is what he also mentions closer to the bridge of the song, that more we look at him cuter he gets & we end up.wanting just him ... btw, it is 100% TRUE !! đŸ˜Œâœ‹đŸ€ŒđŸ€ŒđŸ€ŒđŸ„șđŸ˜©đŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œđŸ’œ

4:41 no it's like which part of me do you want? Like Jimin is very cute and sweet and innocent but he is also really raw and sexy and he is also very cool and a dork and this and that. He is multifaceted, it's all him, it's NOT him changing for someone else's sake, it's being with someone having fun in different ways, being ALL of yourself.
Genie or Aladdin, granting wishes or receiving?
Not being all boxed in and afraid of showing different sides of yourself.
    It's hot.

They have a ton of interesting songs that uses intelligent metaphors, such as “seesaw”, “whalien52”, “134340” and a lot more. They also have songs like “the truth untold”, “Anpanman” changing fairy tails or children stories into their own. Comforting self-help songs like “Paradise”, “Zero O Clock”, “So What”, “Blue & Grey”, “Love yourself answer”, “So far away”, “Lost”, “Tomorrow”, “Nevermind”, “Magic Shop”, I feel like I can continue with the list forever. There are also storytelling songs, which I enjoy a lot, such as “Moving On”, “Rain”, “Tear”, “Born Singer”, “Hiphop Lover”, “HYYH intro”, “My Time”, “Inner child”, “Awake”, “Ma City”, “Dear My Friend”, this is a list I can go on for awhile too. Can’t wait for you to get to a lot of the songs and lyrics! You will find a lot of unexpected Jems

Great reaction Bryan. Im catching up on your last few videos. Happy that you analysed this song properly and I think your right it is a kind of sad song. Yeah to me the 'filter' is like different personas which the public may see, but its not necessarily the real Jimin. But i also feel its kind of saying you don't have to be one thing you can be / become different versions of yourself and still be you. Of Jimin's other songs I look forward to you hearing 'Lie'. It has a completely different sound both vocally and musically (a little classical but kind of dark ) and has very interesting lyrics and meaning. 🙂💜

In my humble opinion and knowing BTS message (love yourself) I think Jimin is acting like a mirror saying to us we are not just one person, we can be whoever we want to be. Or it's our soul telling us to choose a filter that fits for that day and could make us happy (or feeling better) not bored (as at the beginning).

If you react to more Jimin solo songs I recommend:
    -Promise (my favorite)
    -Lie
-With You (although it is an OST for a movie)
This song is so deep but honestly agreed don’t really want to think about it. It is so sad and unfortunate. As someone who is so famous I find it hard to find someone who you want to show your absolute true self but also not feel like they are into you for money etc.
Also I do agree with what you said after watching the live performance.
Edit: It took me a while for me to really like this song just because I wasn’t use to its sound. Now it is one of my favorites.

this song was so unsettling when i first heard it. i think it definitely is meant to be a teeny bit off like the way the lyrics are written reminds me of the type of horror stories where a normal day to day occurrence slowly starts tipping into something obsessive or extreme?
idk if that makes sense but the song sounds like when someone is just a small nudge away from going mad.
for me it falls into the shadow portion of their map of the soul album. overall the song feels so sneaky to me like if you dont pay attention its just a fun song with flirty lyrics but the more you read the words the more you go ??? wait what?? thats kind of extremely unhealthy??? ?
again when listening to their mots songs, there were so many times i felt like the execution of the themes(persona shadow ego) were so well done. filter was one of my favorites in terms of theming.

The song is depicts the life of celebrity stars like BTS --- it could be that sad sometimes. Althoigh, Jimin also explained his intention on this song that it could be reflective of today's youth who are so cought up with the life in social media of which one cannot tell what the truth or not. That's just how BTS' Album works. The whole tract tell a story in its entirety, one song is connected or related to the other. At this point in time, BTS' album amplifies their emotional state at this moment, finding their ownselves individually. Meaning, they have grown up by this time into intelligent young men who were becoming aware of their reality and seeing the impact of their voice as their world becomes bigger and bigger. member. As JHope says, "Popularity comes with great reaponsibility." As to Jimin during his work related trip to Japan with J-Hope and at that time the toll of emptiness started hitting (him) Jimin and, as he had free time, he watched in their hotel their past concerts and saw the clip where the audience started singing their song. It suddenly brought tears to Jimin and that's when he realized, "This is it, this is the meaning of all that I do." That trip rejuvinated him and made him realized his dream why he chose to be a performing artist is to actually make people happy. In this Filter, Jimin shows here how an artist like him, like them BTS, could be so hard on themselves and up to what extent they are willing to go for so their fans will not get tired of them. But, fans never gets tired of BTS who continues to entertain the ARMY by filming Run BTS and In the Soop to uplift them in the darkest time of their lives during the pandemic. In fact, they were named as the Entertainer of the Year (2020) by Time Magazines and One of the Most Influencial People in 2021 by the same journal.

the meaning is actually both. on the album persona. they talk alot about the army and their stardom and how it affected them. jimin wanted to create a being who was more than human for this performance. he used inspiration from armys tik tok videos and edits to describe how we see him. but at the same time showing us how wrong that is.

Actually, I've always been under the impression that he meant it about... armys, in fact. That he adjusts himself to the audience and our expectation (in a way that I agree isn't the healthiest). In my opinion, it's a playful/sexy song to address the way he changes himself to be whatever pleases us/the media as if it's a power of his (to become whatever you wish, kinda like a genie)

Basically that is what these boys do for their fans. They show their true selves in many ways yes, but they are constantly in the public eye. They constantly have to show their best selves. They constantly have to be watchful and guard whatever they say because of the influence they have and how judgmental the public can be and is. I think Jimin played off with what it means to have the BTS Jimin persona. “I will be whatever you want me to be to entertain you”. Especially on stage performing. It is a sad song. I have always known it was a sad song but it is also a beautiful song because in it is truth.
That is how I interpret it.

Hehe well you said that MOTS7 is connected to Jung theory, but when you were listening to "Filter" it totally leave your mind 😋 bc this is sooo "persona" concept, I wanted to write what Jimin said about this song but I saw some people did it, I'm a little late this time to watch, I was playing games all weekend so didn't watch anything.
In my opinion in this album olny Jhope song is about ego, another solo songs are mostly about persona and some shadow aspect, like I know you watched My time next, bc this next one for me to watch, but with that you listen to 4 solos, 2 were about persona, 1 about shadow and one mix.
the same with the rest songs there is a not very much songs that touch on ego specific, expect song "Ego", maybe 2 more in some way, most are like mix of this three archetyps, but mostly persona and shadow are visible. But that my opinion.
Also did you read Jung book map of the soul or some papers about his teory of personality, I think you look at ego like Frued seen ego, not Jung, bc it is very natural, people say ego and it is usually not positive, hmm or little on the nose, but it is not Jung way, but I don't know maybe I take your world like that when you talk about ego but you don't mean it.
I actually agree with you, I'm also not really in this song but I like concept, guitar, dancing, Jimin voice, etc, I like this song, but not my cup of tea😉
