  • How to repair a cheap desk fan that won't spin or spins slowly.
    this one had safety or security screws with a triangular or three cornered slot, so I had to make a bespoke screwdriver tool from a nail to get into the fan motor. Here's how!

    I have a couple of large Maxx Air garage fans when one of them slowed down to almost a halt. So, I obviously turned it off so I didn't burn up the motor. I didn't want to toss the fan, because they are not cheap, so I turned to CZcams and found this. Now it is up and running again like a champ. Thanks bootsowen for the remedy.

    I had a small desk fan that began doing similar things and was able to clean the rod even easier but some of the same steps you took so thank you for getting pointing me in the right direction!

    This was an easy fix! The fan was so locked up that when I was cleaning the thin film off the parts, I thought that there was no way that was the problem. I was wrong, fixed it right up.

      Thanks. I did it to an old air dehumidifier last week. The fan had stopped but everything else was fine. A tiny bearing had caused the whole machine to fail.

    Honestly I have the same exact fan, it was moving extremely slow, my dad assumed it has broken so he put it away and it caught dust. Just now, I turned the fan on and started blowing between the fan wings as it was moving and very soon is started to spin fast, it’s working as new rn

    I lent/ gave an old tabletop desk fan, not unlike this, to my neighbour when their A/C broke down. It stopped spinning completely today (it was already getting weak), so I took it back to check it out. Since the fan is probably 15 or more years old, I figured it may just need a cleaning (hopeful it wasn't the capacitor). Although I got the motor out of the casing, I couldn't take apart the assembly (stripped the screws that were holding them together). So, after noting that the spindle/ axle did not spin freely AT ALL, I sprayed electrical contact cleaner into the groove where it exits the motor. Noticing that it immediately freed things up, I sprayed a little more, and spun, and did so several times, using a rag to clean up the gunk that came pouring out.
    After putting the whole thing back together, - voilà! - Good as new!
    Your video got me as far as I did, so thank you !

      Excellent. Thanks for the message. A drop of motor oil. Or 3 in 1 oil or similar should keep it going for another 15 years.

    I took my fan apart the other day, big on hope that perhaps the sudden slow oscillation was down to improper assembly. I was wrong. After seeing your video, I might have to consider disassembling it again. Problem is I'm not exactly handy, and I lack most of the needed tools. Imagine I'm supposed to come up with a triangular screw driver. 🙄😒

  • @nordisknz

    Fan speed 1 & 2 spin very slowly for me but fan speed 3 is fine. Would you say it’s rather unlikely for it to be just dirt build-up? It’s not an expensive fan but if it doesn’t have to go to the landfill yet and be replaced by another one shipped around the planet then that’s a win! Thanks.

    • @bootsowen
      @bootsowen  Před 4 lety +1

      The oil in these fans gets old and dirt gets in. It's up to you whether or not you fix yours. It is difficult for me to diagnose yours from my sofa! Good luck. Let me know if you throw it out!

    I have an old 50's fan that spins very slowly on high speed compared to an identical one I had before it. Do you think it could be the same issue and I can clean it? Also, is WD40 ok to use on electric motors?

    • @bootsowen
