      Hometown
      Dallas, TX
      Biography
32 Degrees was the brainchild of Phil Hardwick, Howell Pugh, and Andrue Oliver as a way to bring the emerging sounds of Drum&Bass/Jungle to the Dallas massive. These early events were a unifying force within the scene, as they gave the local junglists an outlet to play this "new" sound. Most of the DJ's, producers, MC's you see today were at those early parties, brocking out or playing the tunes that shaped our current scene. The first events were held at a little club in Deep Ellum called Dread 'n' Irie. With a 300 person capacity it didn't take long to fill out the venue for the quasi-regular events. Slowly the sounds of Drum&Bass were filling the local raves and renegades in and around Dallas.
It didn't take very long before 32 Degrees was a staple at most raves, as there was rarely a party where the crew wasn't rinsing out a side room. Unfortunatly, though, the raves scene was undergoing a gradual decline and the larger parties became few and far between. Although the crew was quite happy to be playing, we soon grew weary of playing small side rooms on minimal soundsystems, and it was time to make a change. This also marked the closure of the one of the only "rave-friendly" venues in the city, the Dallas Music Complex.
Enter the second level of the 32 Degrees progression. The was a turn-over within the crew as member Andrue Oliver moved onto other pursuits, leaving control in the hands of Wes Stubblefield, James Roberts, Phil Hardwick and Howell Pugh. With this change brought a new soundsystem and a renewed energy. With the lack of quality events happening in the city, we took it upon ourselves to fill the void. The very first large scaled event was "Legend" featuring DJ's Barry Weaver, Nigel Richards, E-Sassin, Casper and Bobble....soon however the venue used for the event, Dallas Music Complex was closing. James and Wes set out to find a venue that would allow the crew to play Drum&Bass on their terms, and create a space that filled the venue void left by the closing of the DMC.
Decibel was found in January of 99, and the slow tedious process of transforming it from a truck transmission warehouse to a viable dance space began...The time table was set so that the first large scale 32 Degrees shows were to coincide with the opening of Decibel but unfortunatley, it wasn't ready just yet. James was able to locate Old Fort Dallas just south of Dallas for those first all Drum&Bass events. These events, "Presha 99 and Tech 5000" really proved that Dallas was ready for the full D&B onslaught. Tech 5000 was also the first event that featured UK D&B talent in Dallas, and was the first of many appearances of Technical Itch and Decoder. The event was a serious rinse-out and proved that the scene was prepared.
The grand opening of Decibel featured the likes of DJ Trace, Fierce, and MC Rymetyme, on a blazing night in May. As Decibel began to take shape so did the scope of the 32 Degrees event calendar. Soon our sound branched out (with James being a Househead it was only a matter of time!) and we started to do house and drum&bass events on a regular basis. During this time a long list of international talent rolled through the doors of Decibel. Other local crews, like Prototype, UMS, Household, Undefined Styles, Upbeat, Where's Waldis and several others used Decibel for some of their events, making it the premier party place in Dallas.
Things rolled along fine for over 9 months, with over 40 events being held there, before a sudden and immediate closure by the Dallas Fire Marshall, despite having all the necessary and appropriate permits needed to run a dance venue. We believe there were lots of contributing factors in the closure of the building. Now however decisions are being made and it may be time to make a another change in the future of 32 Degrees.
      Stay tuned.....
