Yeah this one has tons of references! One of my faves is how Korean adults/society complain that "kids these days don't put in enough effort" and how millenials adopted the meme "an effort is not enough, we must put in eeeeeeefort" and that was included in how they sing this song.
There's more explanations on this translation blog: doolsetbangtan.wordpress.com/2018/08/02/baepsae-silver-spoon/

Also for others- the song is based on a Korean parable about parrotbills vs. storks hence the bird dances- saying you should tailoring your ambitions to your ability/station in life, it was translated as tryhard / golden spoon.

yeah.. it's a lot pressure in Asia.. in our country, it's like a tradition or habit to give back to your parents when you started working, like you give them money, build house, help your siblings to pay for school, etc.
and to think that the salary that you've received can't even support you for a couple of weeks, and you have to save some for your future...
there's a meme here when a baby was born, a parent would say "this child will save us from poverty"
but we chose not to complain cause our parents also worked hard for us to graduate, to give us better education.. and that's when Spine Breaker enters the chat

Yes Korean names also place what we think of as the last name first. So with BTS their names are Kim Namjoon (RM), Kim Seokjin (Jin), Min Yoongi (Suga), Jung Hoseok (j-hope), Park Jimin (Jimin), Kim Taehyung (V), and Jeon Jungkook (Jungkook) and Kim, Kim, Min, Jung, Park, Kim, and Jeon are their last names (it's kind of weird how many people get confused with that cause how likely do they think it is that three men with the first name Kim ended up in one group.)
You mentioned it but yeah I absolutely love Suga's line that goes "They say 'It's fine as long as you're on the same field.'" it's such a brilliant reference to the concept of equality vs. equity and how it's not enough to treat people the same if the disadvantaged aren't given what they need to actually be equal to the privileged. I think you would love Suga's song Strange ft. RM, its just a brilliantly written critique of capitalism and at least in my mind it feels somewhat in the same vein or spirit of the messages of this song

This song perfectly expresses how frustrating it is for young people to be told by old people that they're lazy and need to work harder so they can live just as well as they did. But it's not possible because in the 50's 60's and 70's , a man making minimum wage could buy a house and support a family and go on one vacation a year. Nowadays, minimum wage doesn't even get you a whole apartment. You have to live in a terrible place with a bunch of roommates. And college isn't the answer because back then college was cheap. Now, a four year degree gets you barely above minimum wage and a crippling amount of debt. Young people today have nearly no hope of living decent lives.

    • @yvonnemckeown8495
      @yvonnemckeown8495 Před 3 lety +3

I do believe that forcing a college education on someone is not the answer. Nowadays a college education is just not enough. It is like a high school diploma in the earlier years. Too many employers feel an individual needs a college education to succeed. This is just not true, but it is the reality right now (and that needs to change). BUT, working hard is something that you, as an individual needs to be proud of, regardless of the monetary outcome. I feel that is a problem right now....too many feel that if they work hard they should make lots of money. Maybe you should speak to some of the blue collar workers of the 50's, 60's and 70's that worked their asses off to support their family. I'm sure they didn't feel they lived extravagantly, but lived well and took pride in providing for their families. Just my opinion of course. The college education 30 years ago meant more money. A college education now, unfortunately, does not. The education system and requirements for employment need a big overhaul. It does not take a college education to make a good employee.

One thing this Eng Sub video left out was the hilarious pre-practice game of rock-paper-scissors.... The loser would be the one to do J-Hope's freestyle dance break towards the end
In the very first round of the game the entire dance-line at the time (J-Hope, Jimin, JK) won and were out of consideration. You can see the concern on the faces of some of the members left....Then Suga ultimately loses and falls to his knees yelling in frustration while V gleefully dances around him
Suga was a good sport as usual and gave us some terrific moves and hilarious twerking. You can hear the other members starting to pump him up and yell in anticipation in the moments building up to the dance-break section

I feel this song so much on a personal level. I've been working the same company for 11 years and trust me I thought I'd be way up there by now but I'm not and it became a dead-end job where I barely make ends meet. I finally got my own place and I'm moving in next month but now I need to scramble to pay the high cost of living and find a new job. It's so hard especially at my age 28 and still in university. The one thing I can say is BTS really pushed me to go back to school when I was 23. Especially Suga with his song So Far Away where he says, "though your beginnings may be humble, let your end be prosperous". I keep those lyrics with me no matter what I do in life to achieve my dreams no matter who tries to put me down. This song describes the generation in Korea who gave up on everything (n-posedae) dating, marriage, giving birth, employment, buying a house, human relationships and hope.

They refer to the younger generation as crow ti ts with short legs that can't catch up/ reach up on the older generation the storks with long legs. That also portraits that it was different times for the older generation with economic growth that it was a lot easier for them to get somewhere in life and achieve the house and a good life with good economy and that they think that apply on the younger generation now too even though it isn't possible anymore and has got so much harder. The refering to the birds shows in the dance.

It’s a shame Bangtantv only started to include english subs not long ago, since Bapsae was released 5 years ago when BTS were less internationally known, Bighit didn’t bother with other language sub titles otherwise it would have been perfect to use their version video because it had the intro part (which you can still go back to watch if you like it’s funny!) where the boys were playing Rock Paper Scissors and Suga lost so he had to do that solo twerking bit near the end that’s why the other guys were laughing at him 😂

🐦 this was the only similar bird emoji I could find....🤷‍♀️
One thing, probably more here in the west than the east is that there are many of the older generation that can see how hard it is. They're the one who help with no expectations back, usually family. Like my sister, she know her two boys will be living with her for a while and she accommodates her life for that and they can do want they're passionate about in life.
Unfortunately all that type economic growth thinking was infused in government policies or laws or legislation. The system needs a huge overhaul if it wants to keep up with the times, as it is its already 20 years behind.
I ran through the system for years, and I finally said f*** that. I'm back in school and doing my passion of interior design. Finally! And it's so much more fulfilling. Which by the way, I'm doing a project now with traditional Japanese design. So you guys do you, and continue your dreams 💜
You caught on to the meaning very easily, so the explanation vid is not really needed, except for the odd cultural terms.
If you want to check another kpop singer, I would recommend Jesse. She was born in America, grew up in Queens, and has been in Korea since she was 15 I think. Anyway, she has a similar attitude to Nicki that you may really like her. She literally has no f**ks to give. And she's really funny.

Baepsae/ crow tit ( a teeny bird with little legs) is called try hard and the stork is called silver spoon. The dance is so bird like and the movement of the legs has meaning. It's far from being a joke to them, especially Suga who was nearly killed by being run over by a car when he was working under the table as a delivery guy. He couldn't afford to pay his trainee tuition and buy food too. His shoulder was dislocated and he was afraid to even tell the company until he literally couldn't move and they found out. When he ggot out of the hospital Big Hit offered him a scholarship. He'd expected them to drop him.

This is the song that made me an Army, even though we are so far again the idea of "meritocracy" it's something that is present in all of the world in more o less capacity. And that's why we love them, the talk about the struggles of our generation and don't shy away from it.

Wow. I love Baepsae. I never once looked at the lyrics. I didn't realize it was so deep because it just seemed like a fun song. I realized that even songs I grew up with (in the 90s) that I would rock out to, had really deep lyrics and when I hear them now I'm like, 'Wait, what did they say?!" 😂

Yes, in Korea their last names come first. Like RM his real name is Kim Namjoon. Last name is Kim.

Something gets a tiny bit lost in translation here, and it's really only the nuance, since you got pretty much all of it). The song is titled Baepsae, which is the Korean word for the crow-tit (a very smol, very adorable fluffy bird that is one of RM's favorites) and is inspired by the Korean proverb

BTS did the MV themselves 😂 they only have like half a hour to do it I think. It's really fun to watch and it has a great message too. You're one of my favorite everyday content! Love you🐦 🐦

As an early millenial (1981) who grew up working and learning under boomers, I see the advantages and disadvantages each gen went thru. Though the boomers had the benefit of a growing economy, the millenials had the advantage of technology. This channel is a perfect example - many millenials are earning serious money in YT, IG, tiktok, online services/busineeses, etc, something that was not available to boomers during their time

There is one thing you need to know. In Asian, teacher means another meaning that It literally means person who born earlier. So we have a culture respecting old people because they can teach us any respects of life. In this song, teacher means negative that people who dominate all opportunities because they born earlier and give hopeless advise to young generation.

"What you look like".... reminded me of what I've seen in many Kdramas. When applying for a job, your resume must have your photo attached. lmagine being judged based on your looks. Probably why they have one of, if not the highest, cosmetic surgery rates in the world. Also, the education stress...classes attended til very late at night....the expectation to get into the best colleges, the best companies....thus, one of the highest, if not the highest, suicide rates in the world. This is one of BTS's most political songs and with many Korean references, it's helpful to follow such videos with the explanation video on DKDKTV. On a side, I often wonder how difficult it must have been for NamJoon's (RM) parents to see him go into rapping and entertainment when he has an IQ of 148, genius. I'm sure it was hard then, but I'll bet they are proud now...successful and doing what he loves. Thanks, ARMY grandma
