You probably need to use an older vehicle that does not have a catalytic converter for this as the cat reduces CO (carbon monoxide) to almost zero.
I guess if you start the car from cold and let it idle the cat may not get hot enough to work though.
I might try this with the exhaust from my mower.

No they DON'T make honey, but they DO pollinate, AND catch harmful and destructive insects (like mosquitoes, cutworms, hornworms etc,) to feed to their larva. I understand not wanting them in your yard. But you DO need to recognize that they're NOT just pests, and if they're where their presence doesn't endanger people or pets, they should be left alone.

    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 Před rokem

They are not honey bees but they ARE a crucial part of the eco system. They pollinate flowers, they eat pest insects, and other things. If they are near your home and have kids, yes get rid of them BUT out in the back 40 or where there aren't kids around, leave em alone.
Dangerous? More kids in Canada die in bicycle accidents and many thousands more injured....so you'd better not let your kids ride bicycles!

Maybe that is simply a matter of confusion. Here in Germany for example we don't have yellow jackets at all. Two wasp species here (paravespula germanica and vulgaris) look very similar to the yellow jackets. They are an annoyance but are generally benign. Some other wasp species are highly protected over here. Hence wasps are not regarded as a pest at all. I love to have wasp and hornet nests around my house since they keep it clear of a lot of other annoying insects. Those who object to these videos may never have had to deal with real agressive wasps or hornets and don't have the whole picture in mind.

From a chemistry and engineering perspective that (probably) won't be carbon monoxide, it'll be carbon dioxide.
Modern cars are fitted with catalytic converters which catalyse CO into CO2 and also the ECU means that an engine almost always has complete combustion.
CO is produced through incomplete combustion and as such it's still a flammable gas in an oxygen atmosphere, as such most modern engines are designed to get bit of energy possible from a hydrocarbon by turning it into CO2 and H2O and the rest (except for a negligible amount) is turned into CO2 by the catalytic converter.
So if you ever decide to run a hosepipe from your tailpipe to the window, expect to wait a very long time.
Also if people are gonna whine over your car producing CO2 versus you using a pesticide, they probably haven't calculated how much CO2 is created in pesticide production.

Interesting... though as others have noted, the exhaust from a modern car or light truck will ordinarily contain essentially no carbon monoxide, so it's a combination of carbon dioxide and lack of oxygen that kills the critters.
Last year, I encountered a very busy yellowjacket nest in the front yard - very fortunately seeing the cloud of wasps from some distance; having recently acquired an allergy to wasp stings, I have no desire to encounter a swarm of yellowjackets up close and personal. Over the next couple of days, I worked up a plan of attack (I don't recall the details, but deploying a battery-powered bug fogger upwind was involved), but before I could carry it out the entire nest was dug up by a skunk. I suited up in my shoot suit, (Automotive paint suit) snowboard goggles, gloves and spray. They were coming from all sides after I sprayed the nest. I mean it could be like the difference between the docile European honeybee versus the aggressive africanized honeybees. Maybe the German yellow jackets are not as aggressive as what we have in North America. The only natural way I saw a colony killed was when one took up residence on our back door - except nearby we had some spiders in the shrubs with rather large webs. I don't believe I was ever bothered by that nest nor saw a single wasp or hornet. The next year the shrubs were filled with spiders and webs. I think we had a lot less mosquitoes as well.

So fun fact. A catalytic converter is designed to convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. I wouldn't trust my life to it, but in theory it's mostly co2.
Also, the reason why carbon monoxide is SO dangerous to mammals (lethal at parts per million) is because hemoglobin in blood will absorb carbon monoxide over oxygen and not let go, basically disabling those red blood cells from transporting oxygen. Insects do not use hemoglobin to transport oxygen, and carbon monoxide isn't any more dangerous than any non-oxygen gas.

i think what you'll have to do is turn comments off on the "exterminate" videos but not the "live catch and release" videos.

Keep up the great work Shawn; there will always be negative comments out there. You're doing an incredible job though and thank you for sharing all of your experiences and wisdom with us :).

I love these videos. I’ve learned so much, and have enjoyed watching every one. My sons loved the yellow jacket trap with the chicken attached to the board. I would definitely use this method. I wanted to do liquid nitrogen, but I was scared of lugging it around by myself. This would be much more feasible for me. As for that other video being flagged, I find that ridiculous. You’ve probably saved a lot of people from being attacked/killed by these aggressive insects. Keep making great content. People with brains will keep watching and learning.

From my personal experience, it is better to work on the nests during the night. The yellow jackets are all in the nest and less active.
What worked for me best was making a bucket with limestone (same one that you mix with sand and cement for making concrete) and water and pour it down on the hole. Extremely effective

Hi Shawn. Just be clear in the video. Perhaps have a slide showing a bee next to a hornet. The restriction is based on what the viewers say. So be sure the viewers are not thinking that you are getting rid of honey bees. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!

I do not think these people think they are honey bees; they are totally ignorant nut cases who are offended by any and everything. The stupidy of our fellow citizens is astounding to me. I use gasoline as it is more convenient and cheaper than ordering something.

What you experienced is just standard 'Karen' behavior. Nobody with delicate sensibilities what's to see how the sausage is made. But I bet most of them don't bat a eye eating beacon for breakfast, or mind killing yellow jackets when it's their kids being stung.

Shawn, the exhaust of your engine is mostly co2 (carbon dioxide) and water. If your vehicle has a catalytic converter on it, which almost all do, it won't have very much carbon monoxide. It is the lack of oxygen in the exhaust that kills things, not carbon monoxide. Great video.

This is correct. Helps explain why people don't kill themselves in their garage anymore. All they get is a bad headache instead.
