    When the Nikon FMs were introduced, I bought two of them, but I kept both of my Nikkormat Ft2s. The FMs are long gone, but I still have the Nikkormats and both are still working perfectly. This is an excellent video on a great camera.

    A modest correction: It was Nikkormat in the USA to help the US distributor discriminate against grey-market imports, a common practice at the time; it is Nikomat for sales outside the US. I bought my Nikomat FT-2 in Japan in 1976 and still have it. It remains my only non-electronic Nikon for the day the batteries fail.

    My brother in law has a 'Nikomat' FT2 which he swears by and was responsible for me getting into the Nikon system when I was shopping for my first 35 mm film SLR way back in late 1970's. The Nikkormat FT3 was my choice until the FM came out and I purchased an FM. However I've always liked the look, feel, and mechanical solidarity of the Nikkormats. My brother-in-law's camera is labeled as 'Nikomat' which as I understand he purchased it as a gray-market import, thus the 'Nikomat' moniker.

    This camera series is amazing from FT to FT3, I don't think it is a lite version of Nikon F or F2, It is even stronger than the F or F2, simple and stable. Although I own a F and F2, but the best photographs I made, almost all from my FTN and FT2.

    It was a trade mark issue with Zeiss Ikon that had a Ikomat which was too similar to Nikomat, so the non Asian continent ones became Nikkormat after the Nikkor Lenses. I think the name Nikon had also ruffled some feathers with Zeiss Ikon with the similarity between Ikon and Nikon in the early years.

    Having an ASA lock is a definite plus for this former Nikkormat FTN user. Even more interesting is the FT3, which finally did away with the "Nikkormat Twist." Before FT2, I'd moved on to Nikon FM, since that model had a Motor Drive available! I didn't have enough scratch for Ye Olde Nikon MD-12 until I bought a Nikon FM2, then I too, could be as noisy as Nikon F users, clank-whizzing along sine the 1960s'.:

  • @randallstewart175
    @randallstewart175 Před 5 lety

    I bought a Nikomat FT-2 in japan in 1976. I used it for several years until I moved to an FM, FE-2, and later autofocus models. I still have it in mint shape. For old times sake, last year picked up a mint FT-3 with original 50mm 2.0 (AI) lens. I haven't used it yet, but will have it CLA'd, then take a trip in the Way-Back machine. I think you tend to find FT-2 and FT-3, in minty shape because (1) they are built like tanks, and (2) folks who bought them only used them for a year or two before moving to the new-style, light weight FM/FE series. Most have been in the sock drawer of decades.

    Great video! I have two S lenses similar to yours and am looking to switch from digital to film. Would an f3 be less work as far as switching lenses goes? And also what is the latest model that will meter and focus well with that type of lens?

    • @northof-62
      @northof-62 Před 3 lety +1

      OK this is for those who read your comment and wonder.
      F3 requires AI lenses to meter at full aperture. For non-AI lenses without any modification, you can only meter "stop-down" that is as you turn the aperture ring the viewfinder gets darker with smaller apertures. And you also have to press a release button close to the lens mount white dot and flip a lever out of the way of the aperture pin bracket on the older lenses.
      When the pre-AI lens is mounted you also have to press the depth of field button to meter correctly at the given aperture. Of course if you only shoot at max aperture (largest opening),
      this is not necessary.
      Video on this here:
      czcams.com/video/NL9FUwWMRrg/video.html
      So F3 is pretty cumbersome to use with non-AI or older unmodified Nikkors.

    I bought a Nikkormat FT2 body when I still had my Nikon FTn. Unfortunately, the Nikon mercury batteries went away. Fortunately the Nikkormat uses modern batteries. I do prefer the Nikkormat since it has a higher flash sync speed and don't have to remove the back to change film. I never needed the pro features that the Nikon F used.

    • @OldCameras
      @OldCameras  Před 7 lety +1

    Love the video! It was very interesting. What would you recommend for one who is looking to buy her first film camera? I own a Nikon D5200 with the 35mm 1.8g lens and I want to master composition and film is a good way to do that. My budget is $200 with the lens. I'm looking at the Nikon EM 50mm pancake lens, Nikon EM 24/28mm lens, or a Nikon FM2 with 28-70mm. The prices range from $140-160. I would be glad to hear your suggestions. Thank you.

    • @OldCameras
      @OldCameras  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi Charlene, thanks for watching.
      Actually, unless you're determined to get a film camera, I'd say you already have the 'perfect' kit to master composition. I know what you mean though, film kind of 'forces' you to be more careful and thoughtful because each shot is costing money :) For me, I'd say my composition comes from drawing (and reading) a LOT of comics for many years. So, if you're into that, it helps in a funny way. It helps with telling a story within a rectangle, if you know what I mean. The other thing is art books, both photography and paintings. It helps to see where the 'masters' put subjects and why they look great. And finally, classic cinema films. So if you watch something like The Matrix, or Ben Hur, when the frame is still and nobody's moving, check out how everything is carefully placed. They spent a LOT of time thinking the composition through.
      Ok, now about film gear. Well, I would recommend either the 50mm lens, because on a film body, it will look similar to the 35mm you're already using on the digital body. 24/28 may seem too wide at first. Also I don't really recommend a zoom, because you're after simplicity really, and personally I think zooms make you a little lazy at times. It does for me anyway :) Besides, you want to fully master that 50mm length first.
      To be honest, all the Nikon cameras are so good that you can't go wrong with any. Just make sure it is in good condition. Nikon EM is perfect, but has no full manual control - but since you're after composition, I guess you don't have to worry about exposure settings and all that.
      Hope that helps.

      The Nikkormat FT2 is as beautiful and solid as they come but realize that it also means that it is heavy. The FT2 body is 880g vs.460g for the very plastic EM. Personally, I'll take the FT2 over the EM any day but if weight is a factor, you may want to take that difference into consideration.

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 Před 5 lety +2

      I suppose that depends on which of the 7+ versions of 50mm 1,4 Nikkor you have. Generally, speaking, IMO no, the 55mm 1.2 is described as "modest", meaning that it's optical performance is quite low at the wider apertures you tend to use a 1.2 lens for. At 5.6 and smaller, it gets as good as it is going to get, but that is still going to be inferior to the 1.4 Nikkors, stop for stop. This 1.2 is a very old lens, replace by a much better 50mm 1.2. As for lens speed, consider that the 1.2 is only 1/3 stop faster than a 1.4.
