It's a normal development. In the 90s gaming was still not main stream so they didn't have to compete with too many developers. Nowadays everyone seems to be playing games even if just casually. That's why the market nowadays is flooded with developers and games. Competition is as hard as never before. That leads to very high production costs and deadlines because you have to make sure that your game releases before others and that the quality of games is higher. In theory, it's great for consumers. But bad for developers.

Great video, David! It all makes perfect sense to me too. I see it as similar to what Disney is going thru recently with Marvel shows and their Cinematic Universe. They saw some success in the prior decade and then just went crazy with like 3 to 4 movies and several Disney+ shows per year planned. Quality took a hit and the mainstream stopped watching as consistently as a result. So they scrapped multiple projects altogether and combined some stories into others they had more confidence in. And similar to SquareEnix, those cancelled projects will undoubtedly have had some fans, but ultimately it is for the best. The brightside is that for SquareEnix, they did this pruning early enough to just focus on unannounced projects. People should be thankful for that because it burns much more if they had waited for financial turmoil and let announced games go under.

I'm inclined to see it as an overall net good more than bad, though I do worry a little about what this means we're going to miss out on. Games like NEO TWEWY, the Voice of Cards trilogy, and The Diofield Chronicle may have only happened because SE was throwing money at smaller projects with wild abandon, and even though I understand they'd find more success priorizing the likes of FF, KH, DQ, and NieR, I still hold a very soft spot for these other games. SE's biggest misses seem to happen when they either try to exploit their IPs or the prestige of their developers. But when they're essentially starting from scratch, some pretty cool things have happened under their banner, and I hope they don't shy away from taking more bold risks even if a fanbase isn't already built into their anticipated profit margins.

Well they were comparing rebirth sales to remake, which I think is a mistake considering all the factors stacked against rebirth. Rebirth had the macaroni money and lock downs, and it was the return of a franchise. Makes sense for it to do well in sales. Rebirth only released on PS5, in a time after massive inflation in the economy. Then it’s also a sequel which generally don’t do as well. There was also very little advertisment for rebirth, I didn’t even know it was coming out until a month before release.
Long story short rebirth could be better than remake in every aspect and it would still be surprising for it to keep up with remake sales imo.

On the one hand, I can understand why people are concerned about the future of certain titles. I think SE needs to scale back thing, they've come up with some bangers when it comes to games with the AA budget games. However, their AAA projects have taken a noticeable dip in quality. They absolutely need to go back to their PSOne & PS2 days in which they did put out experimental titles but also put out plenty of bangers too. I think Team Asano & Tri-Ace will be fine and will continue to put out plenty of great games. I have a feeling Tri-Ace is taking notes on how to do the next Star Ocean after seeing how well Second Story R sold. Tactics Remake will still be a thing I'm sure and with how well Unicorn Overlord is doing? We'll see more of the Ogre franchise too.

In regards to the point, 'put out a whole bunch of games in a short time being a bad strategy', what I'd like to know is who and why did they think that would be a good strategy?
I mean, a large swath of the globe doesn't have that disposable income to spend on video games, not to mention the time you'd have to spend to finish each game within that timeframe, that's going to eliminate alot of potential customers.

I think every FF is playable on current consoles except 13. It’s only a matter of time I hope. And I definitely hope 13-2 gets remastered too.
    You can keep Lightning Returns.

I hope youre right. Its shame cuz harvestell and dio field was good. Problem is they have a problem with project and budget scope. FF7 was too big. The amount of resources and detail was overkill. Thats the real reason the game is a trilogy now. Break it up and sell it 3 times. Square shines in AA gaming. Think back to the ps1 and ps2 golden age

I kinda had the same reaction is you, putting out many games but many of them sub par made me skeptical that new releases would be quality enough to buy. I like that they are going back to the company that made me a loyal fan, and releasing only top tier games. I mean, they came out with a power wash simulator of all things...

I wholeheartedly agree. This is a very wise move on their part, and it seems like they'll be taking a step back to how they behaved in the Playstation 1 era.
Also the misunderstanding of the term HD implies pretty much everything except mobile games. AAA and AA games included. New potential Games as a Service IPs would be included in this as well.
I can actually see them making MORE HD-2D games as a safety net, given costs would be substantially lower as with development times in general, and going back through their older catalog.

This is good for Square Enix because most people have limited time available for gaming so they of course select the games that are more polished and fun to play.

I always attributed the news, haven't read much on it besides your discussion here, based upon the idea that they're looking at it from a business perspective. To put it bluntly, and I think you bring up a fantastic point, to emphasize further, an oversaturation of game releases on their part created this overlap, which would askew the market sales, as well as the ideas of what was popular or not. This would also handicap their own sales as a whole. Honestly, I've been rather pleased with some of their games, which surprised me when I played ff16 7 months later and regretted not buying it day one, so they are certainly moving in a more positive direction, even if their business endeavors may not create the thing that they expect it to.

As an outsider looking in, I’m speculating it’s a combination of the weakening of the yen + their AA efforts were all losses + AAA favoring more franchise releases like Final Fantasy. So they are shifting their all on their tentpole franchises. Its a huge gamble because one miss means the probable death of a CBU/creative studio they have

I do not like the character sprites of the Bravely Default games, BUT those are what Final Fantasy SHOULD have been. I believe if they would just spruce up the visuals, that game series would pick up being the classics that FF once was.

It won't dude -- Visions is a finished product with an announced release window (just a few months away), and past the main-release QA phase by now. They're just putting it in packages now, working on promotional material, platform releases and early patches. None of the cancelled games were 2024 releases, I am sure.

  • @Wildezz
    @Wildezz Před měsícem +1

I think the releases were fine, they just released too much at once back at end of 2022. They should have just timed the releases out better and spaced them out a bit more.
I'm also worried that they may cut the good stuff, and focus more on the fat instead that you mentioned. Given Square Enix's history and their more than questionable moves they have done the past several years, unfortunately I'm not as optimistic. I'm also worried that there may be a doubling down on just the very popular stuff, and the other stuff that (honestly in my opinion) shines brighter gets put to the wayside, especially in the realm of creation of new IPs and fresh ideas. They seem to be constantly chasing trends these days, not setting them like they used to, so that part of me is also like ehhhhhh.
BUT - we will see what happens. I'm personally cautiously optimistic, once again, just given the history of what they've been doing the past several years.

I'm glad that they plan on slowing their roll a little. But I don't want them to become another Ubisoft (Assasins Creed 34!). All the games you mentioned are fine and dandy, but I thought a lot of those different games they released were great. I loved the old Squaresoft days. Parasite Eve, Einhander, Brave Fencer Musashi, Xenogears, Radiata Stories, Vagrant Story, and so much more. Please don't say negative things about Harvestella or Diofield Chronicles when it was great to see a glimmer of the opd Square come back. DQ and FF are fine, but we wouldn't have Octopath Traveler of they didn't take a chance on "weird" games.
