    Lament on the Death of King Richard the Lionheart (King Richard I of England), d. 6 April 1199. Fortz Chausa Es Que Tot Lo Major Dan, by Gaucelm Faidit (fl. 1170-1205).
    "I marvel at how this false, cruel century can contain anyone wise or courtly"
    The tune and Old Occitan words of this heartfelt lament survived from when they were written in c. 1199, by the troubadour Gaucelm Faidit.
    Performed and arranged by DavidYardleyMusic.com (b. 1978). Countertenor voice with a Scottish-made medieval harp from Ardival Harps, based on a 12th Century drawing.
    My new medieval-inspired and fantasy compositions, based on lifetime immersion in medieval sound are available at DavidYardleyMusic.com, written and performed by me alongside a range of top professional ensembles and soloists.

    Your voice is just lucent - this is so beautiful. (And super interesting to see some 12th-century French - looking very Latin-influenced, but somehow less so than contemporary modern French?!)

      Thank you so much - including for teaching me a wonderful new word - "lucent" :) And yes language is fascinating - it's Old Occitan, spoken in the south of France, distinct from Old French spoken in the north of France at the same time.

      Thank you very much Lorna - and I agree with you on the words! Particularly the second of the verses I’m singing here “Meravill me…” :)

      Thank you so much Pauline for your generous words! They mean a lot to me. Looking forward to putting another troubadour song up soon. :)

    I notice that a lot of recordings I hear of troubadour music have a similar vocal style, emphasizing the upper register. Is that a historical practice, or a stylistic choice of yours?
    Either way, you do it so beautifully!

      Thanks Laurel! This is Old Occitan - the language of the troubadours, spoken in the south of France during this period. It’s a beautiful language for singing in!

    This was sooo beautiful! Your harp has the perfect sound for this, too - is it an Ardival? (And what kind of strings?).

    • @CountertenorCanberra
      @CountertenorCanberra  Před 2 lety

      Thank you so much Kathy! And yes indeed - well spotted this is an Ardival harp. Strings are gut and it’s the “Kentigern” model. Have only had this one for a few years and I love its sound. I’m so glad you enjoyed the performance and arrangement of the piece!
