Stepping up their enforcement efforts, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol has recently introduced the first batch of 25 Ford Mustangs slated for active duty on the state's roads in the coming months.
While this isn't the first time North Carolina's highway patrol has turned to Ford's iconic pony car for patrol duties-having previously utilized the Mustang SSPs in the 1980s and 1990s-the new additions are based on the 2024 Mustang GT. According to the agency, the costs associated with these new muscle cars are on par with other vehicles in their fleet, although specific figures regarding the total expenditure or taxpayer funding allocated remain undisclosed.
Primarily designated for patrolling interstates across North Carolina, these new Mustangs have undergone modifications to meet the demands of police duty. Sporting a striking gloss black exterior accented with matte silver details along the sides and adorned with the recognizable NC State Highway Patrol emblem, these vehicles are sure to make their presence known on the road. While interior visuals haven't been released, they're expected to be equipped with essential police gear.
Under the hood, the seventh-generation Mustang GT boasts Ford's formidable 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine, featuring dual air intakes and dual throttle bodies. Delivering an impressive 480 horsepower at 7,150 rpm and 415 lb-ft (563 Nm) of torque, these powerhouses ensure that officers have ample acceleration to pursue even the swiftest sports cars and supercars.
