    "Under what conditions could this conclusion be wrong?" What a simple summary of critical thinking

    When I taught clinical practice to other psychotherapists and trained organizational leaders in effective communication I somewhat jokingly said all you need are two indicators to know you are connecting with the other person-- When you aska question and the person looked a bit puzzled and says, "That's a good question." And when you reflect their meaning and they said, not simply "That's right" but "Exactly." Seriously though, Peter is truly amazing. Both his books and his presentations are so important.

    Thank you, Peter and Institute H21 for an informative presentation with practical tips to help navigate those impossible conversations.

    This was incredible!
    As a psychologist/therapist, I feel I sometimes have to work with “bad faith actors” and don’t have the ability to step away from people. I would love to hear his thoughts on ppl in positions like mine.

    Trying it out in my head:
    me: "I hear what you are saying."
    me: "So, you are saying that Trump is stupid and evil and that anyone who voted for him is stupid and evil, so you are saying that I am stupid and evil."
    me: "Under what conditions could that belief be wrong?"
    response: "I am right, there are no conditions under which I am wrong."

    Is it the goal of politicians to prevent psychological safe environments? Many of these beliefs are promoted by politicians while discouraging having an open conversation on the subject.

    "moral valence" what does that mean? I honestly do not know.

    • @ac27934
      @ac27934 Před rokem

      I didn't know either and had to look it up. It seems to mean "moral value" and is a term primarily used by philosophers. But that's just after 30 seconds of searching.

    How do we stop institutional racism, with-out the knowledge of critical race theory?

    But don’t you demonize and dehumanize people on the left and treat them as an existential threat? That’s what I’ve witnessed at your psu events. I think it’s really interesting that you have these ideas but don’t follow through on them in your work. I wish we could have a conversation about this!

    • @lomoran1540
      @lomoran1540 Před 2 lety

      My whole project is anti -dehumanization! I think everyone is just a person and love asking questions even to people that have arguably “horrible” beliefs!

    • @lomoran1540
      @lomoran1540 Před 2 lety

      I’d love to ask you under what conditions your beliefs might be wrong and would love to answer that question ! We would really have a great conversation

      @lomoran1540 Před 2 lety

      Maybe we both consider each other “bad faith actors” but we could get past that with a conversation!

      I think he treats their ideas as an existential threat. Those ideas are tied deeply into dehumanization and the confusion of epistemology with morality that he discusses in this talk.

    Until the other side starts believing in biology and 2 million years of evolution. we simply can't have a conversation

    • @jatnarivas8741
      @jatnarivas8741 Před rokem

      I wonder who "the other side is", since I know of people of different sides that believe/disbelieve biology, believe/disbelieve 2 million years (actually even more) of evolution, some believe in basic physics and astronomy, some seem not to, the only person that I have ever met who held that less should be expected of black people and thus they should be held to a lower standard because of historical oppression is black and leftist, the person who I have seen as most concerned and active to help the black population is white and independent, and the people who I have seen most adamantly defend that minorities are not really oppressed by the majority are minority.
      With this, my belief is that the "other" is not a monolith, not even a group of monolith, but that each person is an individual.
