  • Walking and camping in the Black Mountains in Wales, this was a cold one! We're at the end of winter now, but snow and ice featured heavily on my first walk up to Waun Fach, with temperatures plummeting in the night.
    I tried out a new sleep mat on this camp, which helped to keep the cold out. Stunning sunset and some starry skies in the night on top of Waun Fach - the highest mountain in the Black Mountains range. I hope you enjoy coming along on this one.

      I've never slept in conditions like that though so I have learned a lot from your video. Especially layering you need to keep warm and safe overnight. Great camping spot with incredible views as well. If I'm going for a sub zero camp it's made me think about energy (gas/batteries).

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  Před rokem +1

      @@thewildcampolians Yeah TBH I needed all those layers on before I got into my bag. I expected to need to take some off as I warmed up, but that ended up not being the case. If anything, I could probably do with an even warmer sleeping bag once temps hit -5 or below, judging by this camp. Cold gas is a problem much below 1 or 2 degrees, and the canister temperature starts dropping even further as soon as you begin to use it 👍

      @@joinmeoutdoors I was reading a bit about Microspikes earlier. One Scottish blogger reckons they're not that great and you lose traction very quickly... I'm thinking of getting my own, just in case it's still snowing up in Snowdonia. But looking at cheaper pairs, as I'll probably rarely wear them.
      I bought some things called Yaktrax a few years ago. Very cheap. I think they had balls rather than spikes but I've still not tried them! 😳😄

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  Před rokem +2

      @@WalksWithOlly Hmm I wonder why that is? It stands to reason that they should improve grip, provided that they are held tightly on your shoes/boots and don't break. £60 is quite a lot really, isn't it? That said, I'm a strong supporter of "buy right, buy once", and it's not like we'll only use a good pair of spikes once or twice over the next 40 years 🤔 It can be hard to convince ourselves to make those purchases that come in over about £20 though!!

    Those type of sleeping bags are designed to be used with minimal clothing on and as close to skin as possible. I only ever wear thermal long-johns and a top with socks and at worst a little fleece in those conditions. They will not work as they should do when you are not letting the body heat out. But trial and error i guess and as you said you sleep cold. Cracking vids anyway 👍👍

    • @joinmeoutdoors
      @joinmeoutdoors  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Steven. I'm glad you're enjoying my videos. Thanks for watching, and for your comment. One or two other people made a similar comment about me wearing clothes in my sleeping bag - bit of a debate-sparker I think! My conclusion is that provided I'm not wearing so many clothes that the sleeping bag becomes such a tight fit around me that the insulation is getting compressed, any added insulation will only help to keep me warm. I'd guess I'd struggle to do the zip up on the bag at that point, which isn't an issue I've faced. A warmer sleeping bag would be good, though actually - I found myself needing those extra layers for walking around anyway, so would a warmer sleeping bag actually just add unnecessary weight and bulk? All part of the process of trying and learning I suppose! 😊 James.

    • @joinmeoutdoors

      Four season tents typically encounter more condensation than three season tents, mainly because the flysheet comes all the way down to the ground and reduces air flow (which makes them warmer in very cold temperatures). The Southern Cross has a vent at each end of the tent, plus I normally unzip the top of the door a bit to keep air circulating. By doing this, I find the condensation levels to be absolutely fine, and possibly slightly better than my Hilleberg Soulo.

    Great video, what shoes do you wear for a trip like this? Like I do winter camping in Canada so I have insulated shoes that go down to about -25 or so. Are you just using ng regular boots in the snow?

      Thank you Grant. Your boots sound really good! My dad has some Meindl boots like that, with thick insulated soles. But yes, I'm just using very ordinary walking shoes that needed replacing months ago. The soles are almost completely worn out, the stitching has failed in several places and two of the lace eyelets have broken through. I wasn't going to let that stop me from getting out, but I can't wait to find a suitable pair of replacements! I don't think I could get by in Canadian winter temps with these though!

      @@joinmeoutdoors oh same, I'm just getting back into it this year. A day of activity outside isn't too bad with the right gear and continuous movement but I've been not going below -10 with my trips yet just because it's gets very cold then. I think you've got a good set up for these temps though!
      I'd recommend taking a look at some insulated shoes for next season maybe too. Doesn't need to be anything fancy but even shoes with 3M thinsulate help quite a bit with the heat leach from the snow.

      Yes it's when you stop moving that heat loss can be a big issue, isn't it? It's rare for us to see -10°C here in thr southern half of the UK, so it's hard to justify another pair of (expensive) walking shoes/boots purely for subzero conditions. Maybe I'm just tight with my money 😂

    Hi,can you connect the footprint like the inner,so the tent is all in one and you don’t have to put the footprint down separately.

    The closed cell pads are great but put the silver side up it will radiate your body heat back up.the decathlon mats are a bit more substantial but the r value is 2 and there only 20 quid.

      Hi Craig. Thanks for that. Over the years I've read comments from some people saying that the silver side reflects heat up, and others saying that it reflects the cold back down. I'm inclined to agree with you and think it probably should be silver side up! 👍 Decathlon offer some really good value stuff don't they. ATB, James.

      @@joinmeoutdoors ye it's something to do with radiant heat and the silver side it doesn't send the cold back down the foam just blocks it and the silver reflects it back to you
