      There was never really any doubt that she was getting paid. A major label released Luke's cover of Traci's song. OF COURSE they were paying her royalties. The only time artist's get screwed out of songwriting royalties is when their music is "sampled". That's when they get ripped off.

    Luke showed the correct way to pay homage and not appropriate Black music. He had her on the stage doing the lead singing on her song that held meaning for him in his childhood with his memories about his father. It's a heartfelt connection and he showed her the utmost respect. She strummed the opening chords and sang first, and did y'all catch the reverant way he watched her play with him? That's how you honor a music elder. And Tracy is making coin from all the remakes success!

I believe that’s why Fast Car became so popular with the country fans. Thank You 🙏🏽 Luke Combs 😇 for bringing Tracy out from wherever she’s living her private quiet life. • @imhereforitall9218
      @imhereforitall9218 Před 7 měsíci +3

      In fact he was. I see it that as well but I also see it from what they described as well. As a Black person I know everything is not about race but I also know that so many things are. To ignore the obvious would not force us to delve deeper in the optics and question ourselves and our humanity. I see zero appropriation in his rendition at all but we know for fact there was a time in our history where a Black artist would write and perform a song and the "only" way that song could be performed was if it was literally given to a white artist and no one ever knew who the originator was because the Black artist never got any recognition and that includes monetarily, and then the default would be the white artist was the originator. That is not what this is at all but I am sure it made folks think about how far the music industry has come. This for me is so not a referendum against Luke at all. He paid pure homage to Tracey and this clearly was a collaborative effort and it shows how she lead into the song with those unmistakably iconic chords and she ended the song with that iconic verse: "Either leave tonight or live and die this way". For those of us in the late 80s who played this song in their own little bubble for years (present company included), Luke Combs introduced it to a whole new audience and Grammys performance by them both introduced it to a whole new generation in the world. And for that I immensely thank them both. ❣

    Fast car broke through 35 years ago, and again today because it's a wonderful song that talks about everyday experiences that are grounded in class struggles. White and Black people alike know what it's like to be poor, to struggle, but to still cling to those things in your life that hold meaning for you.
    But I think there's a huge misconception about the covering of this song by Combs. The way Combs covered this song is the correct, respectful way you cover someone else's music, ethically, legally, and socially.

      No one is reducing Tracey Chapman at all. To be clear, country music is the most popular music. Though Tracey achieved commercial success and not mainstream success, it was not for lack of effort. Luke Combs on the other hand, instead received more mainstreamed success, those are the facts. That is not to say he is any more talented than Tracey. It has been argued that Tracey, although she won 3 Grammys may not have been marketed for mainstream because of the times. She was female/Black/and queer (though she had not officially come out). One thing she also was which is undeniable is very intelligent and talented. So much that she owned her own masters to her recordings which was not in vogue at the time and she also pushed back against music execs who wanted to produce a footnote version of her hit song "Fast Car" and she would not relent. She said that song had to be performed the way she wrote it, as if a story was being told. Guess she knew better. @@ddneq677

My baby daughter was in my womb when the song came out. She grew up hearing me play Fast Car around the house when she was young. After the Grammy Awards, she was the one who was excited about the Chapman/Coleman duet and told me about it. That's how I saw the two singers singing together. But go back a check out the others. I've been ride or die from the git.

    Luke brought a great song back to the forefront. He totally respected and honored her. Whenever you cover someone’s song it’s a compliment. This was incredible and all the divisive forces need to take pause and be humbled by the most normal people on that stage that night. I still have Tracy’s album after thirty years. 🙏❤️

    Two points: first, whether the Tracy/Luke collab is an anomaly based on the past, we can celebrate it as a successful model as what to do going forward. It suggests that maybe (just maybe) the points black folks have been making is getting through. And if you don't believe in the change you fight for actually happening, then why fight? In the future, everyone can point to their collaboration as the standard.
    Number two, black folks need to step up with promoting their non-mainstream heroes, vision etc. rather than claiming "its' about time" when others do. The reality is Tracy has never been embraced in the black community as an all-timer. Many mainstream artists could have done this cover, but didn't. Instead Nicki Minaj sampled one of her classics without permission (granted Nicki was denied permission, and if Tracy has a pattern of denying black artists - then we'd have to turn to her with questions).
    When Lupita was hyped by white media as the next Julia Roberts, we demanded to own the narrative, but what happened? She's back to being "just Lupita". Jeffrey Wright, Tommy Davidson, Loretta Devine... just a couple of truly brilliant performers that come to mind who are just there with no flowers in hand. But soon as white folks "rediscover" them, we'll be there to wag our fingers.

    Ya’ll are way late in the game! Thank God that Tracy and Luke finally did this as a most beautiful commentary about what is possible between humans today, this time through music. But Luke didn’t co-opt anyone. Ya’ll did (straight men and women), and you don’t even know about it. Tracy Chapman is standing on the shoulders of women, who in the 1970s and 1980s, produced music festivals and venues for “Womyn’s Music,” so that women, mostly dykes, could share our music with one another. If you really want to know where her music came from, start with the history of “Womyn’s Music” and the National Women’s Music Festival in Bloomington, IN (where the as-yet-unknown Tracy once appeared on the day stage), the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival and numerous others. It wouldn’t surprise me to hear more of this music “co-opted.” Actually, after 40 or 50 years, it’s about damn time. Thanks for your discussion, and thank you Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs for your beautiful gift. D.F. Campbell, SP, Brazil

    Luke Combs has had a very successful career BEFORE Fast Car! Do some research, he has said that he fell in love with the song at 5 years old listening to it on a cassette tape in his Dad’s truck. For a singer / songwriter, is there a bigger comp than to have her art impact a white country kid? When he first learned to play the guitar, that was one of rhetorical first songs he learned to play. Race had nothing to do with this - it’s the love of good music. Did you have an issue with Whitney Houston taking I Will Always Love You from Dolly Parton? Dolly loves Whitney’s version. So stop it with some white guy making a career off a black woman. Why didn’t any black artists cover the song before Luke?? Because it was a genuine love of the song from Luke and he has been only respectful in playing homage to Tracy. Luke brought the song back, earned lots of money to Tracy, introduced her to a whole new generation of fans, and got her version back to number one on iTunes. Stop making a beautiful moment something ugly.

    My feelings towards Miley Cyrus initially was indifference when it came to her music. She impressed me with her “Backyard Sessions” bluegrass performances with her band. Second time when she sang “Wrecking Ball” on SNL. I know people were saying she took from hip-hop culture during her Twerking period, so to speak… I won’t argue that point . But I like the fact, she stretched herself musically afterwards. Having said that, her song “Flowers” Is not my favorite, I think it borrows from Elton John’s song “Sorry Seems to Be The Hardest Word”

    • @imhereforitall9218

      Yes she popularized twerking and not a good way either. 🤣 I wonder if Robin Thicke is still in theory behind that? Also Miley Cyrus had said some not so flattering borderline racist stuff about rap music and because of that I am not sold that the rap genre has 100% made amends with her as a result given that she herself has profited off of that same music. That's the beauty of appropriation, or not. One can mimic it but you can always go back to your comfortable bubble in the world that society has created for people look like her. i.e. Justin Timberlake.
