I get what you are saying, I never put in a bed in the back of my first Tacoma 4x4 with camper top because I had to haul different loads in it. So, I slept on the truck bed with a backpacking mattress. Not too comfortable. I did have to laugh when you put your cooler in the heated space. I hung mine on a big, flat metal S hook that I hung over the tailgate and could close the top window/door over. But, you are right, if you have milk or dairy in it (me, milk for coffee) you have to make sure it doesn't freeze. Your sleeping bag reminds me of the down one (that I still use) that I bought 45 years ago for 2 and a half weeks salary. Some things have to happen whatever the price. It is good to see someone that says "Why can't I go camp with what I've got?" Be safe!

A little helpful tip for you. You can take a heater core, a small fan and mount them in the back. You can heat up the back while your driving. So when you arrive it's already nice and warm. or in case of emergency just start up the truck. They can be hooked up, to be removable during the warmer months. I use mine when I have no access to power. I've never used a gas heater using this system.

Mate, I live in Brisbane Australia. I just googled the conversion when you mentioned you'd reached temps as low as -24 f & it equates to -31 celsius. Brisbane is a subtropical city our max temps during Summer months normally reach 30 to 35 degrees c & the humidty is the killer up around the 70-80 %. During our winter months our days are lovely around 25 degrees celsius & our nightly min around the 5-10 degree mark. I feel cold at 20 degrees c and that's when my trackies go on.
