- Breaking news in Ukraine: At least one person has been killed and more than a dozen others wounded after Russian missiles struck a hospital in the central city of Dnipro. Local media showed buildings ablaze as staff struggled to evacuate patients. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denounced the strike as a crime against humanity. Ukrainian officials say it came amid a large-scale rocket and drone attack on the Dnipropetrovsk region.
Our Correspondent Mathias Bölinger is in Kyiv and tells us more about the attack.
Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine have carried out a prisoner swap near the contested city of Bakhmut. A hundred and six Ukrainian soldiers were returned in the exchange - and Wagner's commander appeared to be welcoming returned Russian soldiers too. The mercenary Russian unit said it was now withdrawing from the flashpoint city and handing over full control to the Russian military. But Kyiv still insists that Bakhmut hasn't fallen.
Also, a senior Ukrainian official said yesterday that the long awaited counteoffensive is already underway but that it should not be anticipated as one ‘single event’.

Too bad the counteroffensive was basically cancelled, guess the West just isn't inclined to give Ukraine the means to give it a serious chance of success. Still, Ukraine stopped Russia's advance and set its army back at least a decade and NATO's decline has been stopped and it has even expanded, so not a bad result in the end.

The Ukrainian military is currently effectively safeguarding its position and can regain control over its territories. To achieve this, the Armed Forces of Ukraine require a significant arsenal of weaponry. By utilizing Western armaments, Russia is left in a predicament.

a counteroffensive is NEVER just a single event. even the kherson and kharkiv counteroffensives had several events leading up to the breakthrough and exploitation of enemy forces (in kharkiv's case)
In this case there will be a big blow that will mark a start since Ukraine has now Bradleys, Marders, AMX 10, Challengers, Leopards, and large large etc, like 1500 of modern armored vehicles and not even 1 single of them has been seen in combat, nor the NATO trained units have taken action, not even 1 soldier. We've only seen territorial defensive guards, who have been training for offensive for months and their soviet and old light NATO equipment such as Humvees, M113, T-62s, etc. They haven't even used the modern polish/soviet Twardy, because that's for the second group. So there are 3 big groups in Ukraine. The main one and the 2nd one haven't appeared yet

They have announced it like 50 times. Just didn't say when/where the actual spearhead will be... which is normal considering that is one of the most important parts of the entire operation. They have been doing shaping moves for weeks now and it is pretty obvious it will be way bigger than previous pushes in terms of equipment and personnel.

Essentially entire Ukraine was bought by western countries. Every Ukrainian soul is a weapon now. A bullet if you want it to be so. So it make sense to expect some return of investments. It's a war "till the last Ukrainian left standing" after all.

Not BS, counteroffensives often happen in multiple phases, with initial stages not always readily apparent. But yeah, the time, place and manner of the major blows to come will be a surprise for obvious reasons.
You will know, after it started. The Ukrainians play the timing game well. It will happen when no one expects it, just like last time.

Ukraine kinda missed there opportunity, they spent so much resources in Bakhmut. They should of attempted the beginning of last season when Russia was getting more mobilized troops and supplies were stretched to far. The counteroffensive will be much harder now, it’ll be interesting how this plays out.

They have almost run out. Thousands of targets intercepted. If we do not ressuply soon the cities will begin to burn again. They are already letting many through, reserving their ammo for only what is a priority to shoot down. This war is getting very difficult for both sides. If the F16's do not arrive very soon, a Ukrainian loss may be become a possibilty and certainly the war dragging into 2025. Long range precision munitions are vital. The launch platform for those is the F16. Or any NATO jet but we have 3000 F16s lying around, waiting for WWIII.
If tanks do not arrive soon in great numbers there will be problems again.
And the moment anti air weaponry begins to run out fully, the sky will become Russian and with air superiority, victory usually follows even for the Russian armed forces (see Syria).
Ukraine can win the land war and still loose because they get pummeled from the air and Russia just retakes the ruins. The situation is extremely serious. Every shipment of interceptor is a god send that, if sent in numbers along with long range weapons may actually end this, with Donbas and Crimea back under Ukrainian control.
People thinking Russia cannot win this, are delusional. The situation is fluid. A great victory on either side could tip the balance. And it's not clear yet if defending Bakhmut was necessary, a good idea or even a mistake. Impossible to say. It all depends on tomorrow. And the day after that. And so on. Victory may be close tomorrow and unreachable by next week. But really the war has just begun. The lines have been established. Pre war munitions and soldiers expended and dead. Now it's down to attrition, who can replace the burning tank or dead soldier faster. Who can keep up the losses longer. It's like WWI now, just between two nations. It could go on 5 years with millions dead on both sides. Serbia fought until they lost 30% of the entire population. They beat Austria. But the cost is still affecting Serbia to this day. Those people are gone, the country has been broken since.

A large scale counter offensive is not the most sensible choice now. It made sense when they did last, less so now. Holding defensive positions will bleed the Russians dry without massive casualties and high risk. They will attack strategic targets, ammo, fuel, leadership, weakening key areas until Russian forces collapse, THEN they can make a big push, wipe up what's left and permanently take the area. Another 30 Bakhmut's is not what we need right now.

Well for the west is simply. If ukraine attack is a COUNTER offensive. if Russia attack is an "offensive" because somehow a counteroffensive is better PR?
In reality a counter offensive is a coincise operation to thwart (aka COUNTER) an ongoing enemy offensive. if you are attacking in an aerea that has not seen any action recently you are performing an OFFENSIVE.
When Ukraine decided (finally) to abandon Bakhmut (way beyond it made any tactical sense) they did a (short lived) counter offensive on the flanks to release pressure from the city and allow the troops to retreat is relative good order.
Why ukraine decided to defend a city that was under Russian enemy fire constantly is beyond me.. the amount of losses the UA have taken must be immense..

It's normal for artillery crew to be equipped with some kind of small arm for personal protection, even if the hope is that they'll never have to use them. Presumably, the same principle applies.

Ukraine should start making ground before making more demands. They're not even committing forces. The air is neutered on both sides. Why hold out in chance of gaining superiority--and NOT anytime soon? The more Ukraine lets Russia fortify the quicker they'll be forced to the negotiation table. If Ukraine wants their land back they needed to have started a massive offensive months ago. These are excuses. I really hope they get moving, sooner rather than later. Still wasting time in Bakhmut.
