TUGS - Nothing to Declare

Johnny Cuba makes returns to Bigg City, but is he up to no good this time? The first of a few TUGS Buzz book narrations I hope to upload over the coming months.

I think this should have been a script for the second series of TUGS if they had ever made it. Johnny Cuba is one of my favourites from the show. What they did to him in Salty’s Lighthouse was putrid.

You’re probably right. With the amount of explosions and stuff I doubt they’d have enough money leftover to build a submarine that would only be used once.

Yes, it's hard to say which of the illustrators between the Buzz Books and annuals is the better. Both capture the characters brilliantly, although they seem to have occasional trouble with Zorran - who's face never looks quite right in most pictures IMO.

Is it me or do I view this as a Redemption Arc for Johnny Cuba?

I view it as a sort of prequel episode. I can imagine a twenty minute version of this episode with a subplot where Captain Zero explains to his Z Stacks the history between him and Johnny Cuba. According to Captain Star, “the authorities did hold Johnny Cuba.” His escape from prison isn’t mentioned in this book. So that’s why I think that. But it is interesting to think about this as a redemption arc. I never saw it like that before.

After High Winds Cuba's crew arrested ( who were the main influence in his attitude ) and he was given a new one. That's why he's not so hostile here.

Maybe it might’ve only been his crew that were put in jail. Perhaps the reason Johnny Cuba has a good side now is because he has a new crew
