    My understanding (from visiting Spain twice and talking to the locals) is that Madrid would never allow Catalonya to become independent, to the extent of directly sensoring separatists.

      As catalan I agree. Spain cannot afford to lose the milking cow. A very important proportion of the expenditure made by the state in the only Castilian (Spanish) speaking Spain comes from the wealth generated in Catalonia (that doesn't return).

      @@Jorge-Fernandez-Lopez I am totally ignorant about what you describe, you might be correct... but *if* it is true that there is/was censorship by the central government, then we can't know how the public opinion would have evolved "naturally", without this kind of intervention. (I am not defending either side. I am not informed)
