It's the difference between 5 and 6 wins for the Illini, it was very important to them.

The point Bret was making to us on Tuesday was if there’s an injury in the mid season, NFL teams can go find a new player to sign a contract on the streets. Colleges can’t do that.
Since he was wearing an appropriate number to be an eligible receiver 80% likelihood nothing changes. However, they did not inform the coaches of the change hence they broke the rules. This isn't the first time fockell has been involved in similar b.s. its mostly trivial.
I didn’t realize this was something uncommon to Fickell, if so that’s really disappointing.
I believe they only need to tell the officials of the number change. It's up to the officials to inform the opposing team. Don't know if Wis. informed the officials or not. That is the question. If they did then all is moot.
@@LockedOnIllinimy understanding is that the officials had to be notified and were. The rule last year didn’t require notifying opponents. Bert admits to calling the office of the officials regularly if he disagrees with a call, and he was so hot over this, that’s what he did after this game. The rule was changed this year, as you said. Don’t tell me about poor Bert. The way he left Wisconsin for Arkansas was like a thief in the night packing his bags while making a hurried phone call to Barry Alvarez. I should not be so hard on him because he now looks more like a Sumo wrestler than a football coach. Hope he has life insurance.

Let's look at recruiting. For the 2024 and 2025 seasons Illinois has rankings of 40 and 65. Wisconsin, on the other hand, has rankings of 23 and 22. Considerable disparity in talent level. If Illinois is a better team then they have to perform well above their talent level. Not impossible, but difficult.
