- The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument has been a prominent fixture in Downtown Cleveland’s Public Square since its dedication in 1894. The structure’s 125-foot column, once one of the tallest in the city, is surrounded by four bronze large-scale groupings that depict the four branches of the military. The interior walls bear the names of 9,000 men from Cuyahoga County who fought during the Civil War.
While the monument is open year-round to visitors, there’s a part of the structure that’s only shown once a year and draws in crowds from near and far. The annual “Tunnel Tours” were back this past weekend after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. - Zábava
In early 1990, 0r 91, I walked through the monument. There used to be pictures of US soldiers high up on the wall. What happened to all those pictures of the soldiers?
Thanks
:45 driver goes right on red at a no right on red light, lol (don’t ask me how I know this)
how does the guide know there is a pyramid under it? no construction photos available as usual
Where to find more info in relation to the tour? :)
Doesn’t the ground hold up the monument? Please make this make sense
It’s the foundation. They over built it like this so it can last longer. It’s like a basement kinda and keeps water away from the monument and also supports the walkways. Rather than just putting it on dirt. Get it?
Back in the day they built things to last- now we built them as cheap as possible so that’s why it’s probably hard to understand the need for these “tunnels” which is really a basement
built on top of older stuff that they dont mention...why would they use bricks and cut stone?
