- You use it every day without paying much attention to it. But in fact, an escalator has its own history to tell. Its ancestors were used for the construction of the Great Pyramid at Giza in Egypt. Escalators have transformed shopping - thanks to them, the stores were able to grow to many levels. They are everywhere these days, but there are still some important safety rules you need to follow for a smooth ride.

This is actually untrue. I used to work security in an office and for safety reasons, they completely shut off the power of the escalator so there's a zero chance it will turn on.
The Washington DC Metro subway has the most escalators in the Western hemisphere. They are in the process of replacing their very old and unreliable escalators. Sometimes an escalator is turned off and used for walking while the other one is being repaired/replaced. They say to stand on the right, walk on the left

We have to use escalators in our mall because it's the only way to get from floor to floor. When one isn't working we have to climb them because it's the only way to get from place to place.

I occasionally go to an angry birds soft play centre in the town my grandpa lives, the two escalators needed to get to the second floor are broken(have been for several years if I recall correctly), so we have to use them as stairs(the soft play centre hasn't changed in several years, I'm surprised it's still open).
Now that I think about there was an elevator but it wasn't very close to the escalators and only on one end of the mall so if you wanted something on the other side of the mall it was a long way to go. I don't think the elevator actually went to the top floor. I think you had to get out on the 2nd to top floor and take an escalator to get to the top floor.

I know of a couple of escalators where you can stop them without ever pressing a button by standing a certain way, and its only the down escalators that i know of. I dobwhat i can to stop those escalators.

It's not that bad to use a stopped escalator. I have walked on a stopped escalator some times, but it did not hurt me at all. Everything was completely normal. We really have to walk on a stopped escalator sometimes. We can use the elevator too, but what if the elevator stops working, and what if there are no elevators in a mall? In these cases, we have to walk on a stopped escalator.
Looks like you've never been in a mexican subway in rush hours. There's no time to think if escalators are or not safe.
