    House goes beyond the right and wrong of the ethics dichotomy. He does what he must, not what he "should" in order to save lives. That means taking risks that others aren't willing to take due to their false sense of obligation to the supposed virtue of others rather than saving someone's life. They value the rules more than life or the solution to the puzzle, not because it's right but because it's what they were taught. House acts because solving the puzzle is more valuable than following the protocols and rules of the medical 'authority.'

    • @whowho5688
      @whowho5688 Před rokem +94

      Well to be fair, rules and protocols are necessary because not everyone's intuition is always right like House's is. As such, people's intuitive action can lead to bad outcomes and lawsuits. This is why I think having rule is a net positive, provided that those rules are thoughted out and are good. However, even good rules will sometimes result in hesitation or lack of actions that ultimately leads to a bad outcomes. The only solution to that is to come up with better rules and to not let ego or prides or traditions prevents creating new and better rules.

      This is a bizarre take - the only reason House hasn't left behind a trail of corpses and misery is by direct divine intervention, via authorial fiat.
      What's worse than that however is his patients can basically never give informed consent to anything he does, because of the way he chooses to present information e.g. "you HAVE to do this dangerous procedure, because I HAVE to be right, and therefore it's the only option you have" which blatantly ignores the fact that he's basically always wrong 3-5 times before he's right, bringing me back to the first point that if the author wanted to actually display the folly of this tortured genius, they would highlight the death and pain this approach causes, totally restating the case for medical ethics in the process.

    Two facts not mentioned in this clip: Mast cells control hundreds of mediators like Histamine, Heparin, Tryptase, Prostaglandins, Norepinephrine etc. 1. The excessive bleeding from the earlobe shows that the mast cells released an inappropriate amount of heparin which is one of the mediators that mast cells can release. 2. The high dose aspirin can cause a reduction in prostaglandins (PgE2) which is a mast cell mediator, but it can increase Tryptase which is another mediator released by mast cells. Which means that in some cases, if someone has a major issue with PgE2, Asprin can sometimes be used a stabilizer for mast cells when used in low doses. In this case, the high dose of Asprin was able to cause an increase in Tryptase and trigger an attack. It is true, it can be challenging to diagnose mast cell disorders by blood work and urine tests alone. The testing is tricky and very sensitive to failure if they are not handled correctly. Often times a biopsy of bone marrow or other tissues are need need to confirm or assist in the diagnosis of mast cell disorders.

I was not diagnosed with clinical depression because 1)in Ukraine it's still a stigma; 2) I was considered too young for this; 3) I haven't tried to kill myself (and apparently they ignored all the other obvious signs). Well, it has gotten only worse with years and now when there is a tiny progress (still nowhere near enough) I can't make myself go to doctors... Then, I developed breathing problems (I guess physical toll of years of severe depression) and again almost noone took me seriously. I don't care that House can be rude or using questionable methods, he won't rest until he gets to the truth thus relieving patients' pain and saving their lives. Prisoners with complicated and serious conditions get taken to real hospitals, at least in the 3 states that I have worked. I also observed that their conditions are often pretty advanced by the time they get taken to the hospital. I assisted in dozens of gall bladder operations and the worst looking gall bladder I have ever seen was in a prison inmate. I'm guessing that he went through a lot of pain before his vital signs were bad enough for them to make the trip (Maybe thinking that he was faking?) EDIT: "In state facilities, more than 20 percent of incarcerated people with a persistent medical condition go without care. That number jumps to more than 68 percent in local jails. Among a population more likely to suffer from chronic health conditions like heart disease and diabetes, that inadequate care can be deadly." ~ VERA Institute

      A lot of it is because feigning an illness to get someone a ride to a hospital is one of the easiest ways to bust someone out. I worked for a doc who worked at a medical prison for a short time and he said they'd have 3 ambulances come and drive off in 3 directions to lower the chance of hijacking escape attempt

    5:22 Actually House might have been great at astrophysics. He uses treatments knowing that they either work or tell him something new about the condition. That's bad in medicine, and downright malpraxis, but if he learned as much about astrophysics as he knows about medicine he might be the next Hawking. Maybe that's what he does 6 months after the end of the last season. Government probably wouldnt mind the stunt he did if it meant applying his unique intellect to advancing American science, and he definitely wouldn't mind never being without a puzzle to solve. He might even make friends there. A spinoff series regarding that would probably be pretty boring, since discoveries in space can take months if not years to confirm, but I choose to believe that he'd probably do that.
