      I just finished watching season 1 and I'm little disapointed because everyone is saying how good it is, but some characters are quite weird, too little action for a tv show about Rome, battles completly skipped, and everything happens in 4 or 5 locations which feels a lot like low budget tv shows, however I hope season 2 will be better.

    • @Monatio79
      @Monatio79 Před 3 lety +12

      Which characters would you define as "weird" ? Due to the exorbitant costs of production, a lot of "action" scenes were simply not shown, eg. the battle of Pharsalus. Rome is meant to be a historical drama centered around the lives of ordinary Romans, as seen through the eyes of everyman Vorenus and Pullo, which is set against the backdrop of the late Roman Republican era. As for major battles, they do pull out all the stops in portraying a decisive one midway through season 2. By then, the producers were aware that they would soon have to end the series.

To me «Rome» is a true masterpiece with its cast, cinematography, screenwriting and directory so seeing the same characters being so different from Rome’s actors and pretty much everything else it just proved to me even more that «ROME» remains the best tv show. It was a series about the plots and intrigues of the Imperial family. From Augustus through Tiberius, Caligula and finally Claudius. It is interesting to note that most of these TV series on ancient Rome are dedicated to antagonists of Rome rather than in favor of Rome.
    Despite the real reason that attracts the viewers is that they are talking about Rome, rather than barbarians, the history of slaves or other ...
    For me, the reasons for this are mainly two:
    The first is that they are video productions made in “Anglo-Saxon nations”, where Rome is probably seen historically as an invader, and not as the foundation of their culture and, more generally, of Western culture.
    The second is that Rome dominated the ancient world for a thousand of years. And the times it has had a hard time are so rare and incredible that they make them interesting for a video subject.
    For me, the history of Rome deserves more films/fictions that enhance its exploits. For there are so many fundamental and wonderful aspects that have positively influenced our civilization. Like Roman law, infrastructures, science and the arts. Last but not least, the possibility of a united world under a single flag, where it was possible to move with relative ease from one end to the other without problems of culture, language, religion or war. On the contrary, after the end of Rome, it was no longer possible to do so for a long time.
    P.S.
    About why Rome never tried to seriously expand into Germanic territory, it is simply because there was nothing of interest there at the time. But only forests, wood and terrible weather...
    Same thing for Britain or Scotland…
    There was nothing worth going there for.
    Caesar himself since “De Bello Gallico” has amply demonstrated that if Rome wanted to defeat those populations it could do it without problems.
    On the contrary, at the time, the Middle East and North Africa were infinitely rich and interesting areas for trade, culture and climate. It is no coincidence that at some point the capital of the Roman Empire itself was transferred to Constantinople (today's Istanbul).

      Rome was costing too much money. 200 million for 2 seasons. I Claudius is actually better, does not have the grandiose scenes, but has far better acting and historical accuracy. And if that is what you like, avoid Domina like the plague because it is neither historically accurate nor does it have decent writing.

Clau-Clau-Claudius didn't become emperor until the Praetorian Guard assassinated his mean nephew Caligula. Not a single mention that the series is based on a series of novels by Robert Graves (I, Claudius and Claudius the God), Sian Phillips' tarantula Livia. John Hurt was the best Caligula ever! Rome HBO is my favorite Rome inspired show by miles, for (2005-2007) they made due with very little and the plot is insanely engaging.
    Spartacus Season 1 was sick because of Spartacus himself only, Andrew Whitfield (R.I.P) was just perfect fit for Spartacus, he just didn't care and had no feelings/emotions other than revenge and blood, I watched Season 2 Episode 1, whole different story with the new guy, he was all smiles left and right couldn't finish Episode 1, just didn't feel right.
    Barbarians started slow, but once the plot revealed itself, I enjoyed the crap out of it, and hopefully we get the much desired 3rd season, I am really waiting for it.
